Mad Max: Fury Road = Bourne Legacy

With Mel's acting and directorial support, the 5th movie should fare just as well if not better than Fury Road.

I guess most people are skipping this proposal because it's so fantastical.

For me it was a typical summer action movie popcorn flick. There wasn't anything interesting about the characters or story. It just has great visuals and action. If you went in with no expectations, you'd be satisfied, but if you went based on people's over-hype and reactions to seeing it, then you'd probably be disappointed.

Thing that differentiate Fury Road from "typical summer action movie" off the top of my head:
  • starkly original character design (as original as it gets nowadays)
  • impressive performances by EVERYONE involved
  • unmatched stunt work and cinematography, including almost all practical effects
  • seamless and deep world building with absolutely NO expository dialog needed
  • The Fucking Doof Warrior

Men In Black 3 is a typical summer action movie. RIPD is a typical action movie.Lethal Weapon 4 is a typical action movie. Fury Road is a chrome master class.

I'm with ya that I wouldn't mind Mel back for a 5th movie, but Fury Road was amazeballs and Tom Hardy was fine. Fury Road was approximately 10 million times better than Bourne Legacy.

Beyond Thunderdome is a classic? It completely falls apart after the opening 40 minutes. Even the final chase sequence is boring.

I thought it was best to ignore. Max is a symbol of legend not a character after the first movie and Hardy did a great job filling that role, it doesn't need to be tied to a specific actor.

And George Miller doesn't need Mel's help, I like my Max movies fine as they are without heavy handed messaging and goreporn levels of blood.

How was it any deeper than the world portrayed in the original 3 films?

I'm of the opinion that Road Warrior and Fury Road are on a completely higher tier of quality than Mad Max or Thunderdome. And Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever made.

It's nice with all the disagreements and arguing on GAF that at least here we can all gather round and agree that this OP is terrible and wrong.

Let's squash the Thunderdome shit for a second, because that's my personal favorite in the original trilogy.

I've never said Bourne Legacy and Fury Road are equal in terms of quality. It's obvious which of those two movies are superior. My point is that both of those movies starred a main character that happened to be inferior to the series original.

As much as I enjoyed Fury Road, I can't help but feel a slight bit of shame at the fandom that will jump down everyone's throat just for daring to not worship the film.

Maybe OP meant the word "thunderdome" is classic, which is probably true.

The movie, on the other hand, is fairly bad.

I agree overall with you but saying almost all practical effects is a little untrue. There's still tons of CGI but it was utilized masterfully alongside practical effects and stunts. The extremely well done combination of the two is what gives it a look that will age well (similar to Jurassic Park).

lmao

The fact that you've called Beyond Thunderdome a Classic is somehow not the most egregiously wrong thing you put in the OP.

Yup. The first film is a quirky thing that's fun but more likable for ideas than execution and will always be more important for stating the franchise than as a film. Hell you get a recap of all the good parts in two minutes at the beginning of Road Warrior.

And Thunderdome was ambitious and I will respect it for trying to be optimistic and believe in a future of rebuilding, but it failed to be fun or very much like what anyone expected so it's best kind of forgotten, hell Fury Road did.

Road Warrior and Fury Road though are two of the best action movies ever though I give the edge to Road Warrior simply because it's been a top 5 movie of mine ever since I saw it at a wildly innapropriate age of like 8 or 9.

It doesn't have to be. I wasn't comparing it to them, I was objecting to comparing it to "typical summer popcorn movie". Most blockbusters have at least one scene where the characters sit around and explain the world to the audience, Miller's films pretty much never do that. You get a small opening narration and then boom - dude fighting with mohawked madman on a motorcycle for drops of gasoline. Show don't tell. That alone elevates it above most shitty popcorn fare for me.

Think about this: at no point in Fury Road does anyone ever explain what a War Boy is, or what spraying paint on their mouths and screaming Witness Me means, even though the phrase is used in multiple crucial scenes with deeply different meanings. We just know, because the movie shows us and trusts us to understand.

The Bourne movies, just as a comparison, spend an inordinate amount of time in rooms with large screens while important people do nothing but explain the plot and the world to us, and tell us how badass Jason Bourne is, etc. etc. No one has to explain how badass Furiosa is - she beats the shit out of Tom Hardy with one arm and headbutts a cancer patient, no exposition needed.

Now, if you are saying all the Mad Max films do that well, then I am totally picking up what you are laying down, my man.

The Dome scene and some moments from the final chase are indeed better than anything in Fury Road but that middle section is way too bad to ever be called a classic. It's a nice clusterfuck. Fury Road is more homogeneous.

Nothing wrong with that. People shit on Thunderdome, but it has plenty of really good and entertaining things about it. Even if one thinks its the lowest point in the Mad Max saga, it's one hell of a fun low point that I would watch again over plenty of other movies.

Yes, even with the damn kids.

But Fury Road also stars a main character who is equal to the series original: Furiosa. It's just as much her movie as Max's, which is reflected by the title: Mad Max: Fury Road.
