Media Create Sales: Week 10, 2012 (Mar 05 - Mar 11)

I would be mildly surprised if Kid Icarus does over 100k in its first week. Really hard to gauge sales potential in this one considering all the positives it has going for it as of now. I would have easily singled it out as a definite flop a few months ago, but recent news is really making it hard to predict exact sales. That said, I think a lot of people are being a little overzealous with their predictions.

Hope MGS3D did well enough to justify more MGS 3D ports. The 3D was amazing, and MGS1/2 probably would not have the same framerate/control issues that MGS3D did (thanks to their use of scripted cameras).

In spite of the massive push Nintendo is giving the title?
Aren't those predictions a bit too conservative?

I thought 300k was kind of optimistic considering the franchise means basically nothing to the current market. It might as well be a new IP for most people, and it's not exactly the easiest game to explain/sell.

Anyway, we'll see. I'd love to be proven wrong. We'll see how mighty Nintendo's marketing muscle is, I guess.

We must also take in consideration that Sakurai's game often take some time to gain steam (look at the first Smash Bros sales). So I think it will do moderately low first week sales, but it will have good legs. But only time will tell with this game. Really the Wildcard of this year.

New Love Plus got a really, really negative reaction from fans because of various bugs and content shortcomings in the game. So much so that Konami actually apologized on the official site and they're promising to fix the problems.

Not smart from them. They are having a good shot at killing the franchise if a worthy contender approaches.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
Except Level-5.

I don't think so.
Layton was declining since the DS, but was still able to sell more thatn 350K as launch title. Inauzma met the 400K expected, and they just announced the fifth episode (with also manga and anime, so it seems that this brand is still very strong in their portfolio) and now they are trying to expand (with a silly move, maybe...) also the Cardboard Senki franchise to the 3DS audience.

Girls rpg debuted bad, I agree.

Do you see the release of a New Love Plus+ likely?

I think Konami has a lot more to worry about before they even consider that.

https://twitter.com/#!/sofmap_tenjin/status/180190915338571776

The Sofmap at Tenjin made a tweet that instructions from Konami are that all New Love Plus sales are to be suspended. They have no idea how long it will be before sales can resume, but it looks like Konami is pulling copies off the shelf literally, until they can fix the problem and prevent further damage to the brand.

Konami's apology about how fucked up New Love Plus is: http://www.konami.jp/osirase/newloveplus/

Konami's apology about the delay in patching the Love Plus Tools eShop app: http://www.konami.jp/osirase/loveplustools/

Both still have no dates for the fixes. I think Konami might have dug this franchise a grave.

And again, Konami distinguished itself for its outstanding ability in managing brands outside MGS!!!

By the way, is there much difference between a series like Love Plus and "If I was Sealed in a Room with a Girl I would XXX" ? What makes the two distinct, gameplay-wise. From my limited point of view, they are both dating simulations.

Are they really good with managing the MGS brand lately?

The difference is you're not in a sealed room in Love Plus. :p

Of course it's not going to be instantly successful. But Nintendo is trying to push this the hardest they can to make this popular. As I said they've bought the 40/40, hired famous composers, and also attached Sakurai's name to this. People are going to buy this on the basis of being 'by the director of SSB Brawl' and having a similar chaotic multiplayer mode.
Nintendo've also used Nintendo Direct to promote this game even further worldwide. If all this advertising and hype doesn't translate to higher sales, I'll be surprised.

It doesn't have Mario/Zelda/Pokemon in title - anything above 100k will be suprising.

This is really a problem, man.
Konami found a new successful datin-sim after Tokimeki Memorial declined, the first one on DS sold almost 300k.

I want to get Vita but I want strong Japanese support. If these sales continue then I see many jumping ship and shifting projects.

Oh, cool! I'm certainly not against this.

Anyone mind posting the chronological order of the series? I guess PW is after MGS3?
For the canon Metal Gear storyline it goes:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid / Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

And then there are non-continuity entries:

Snake's Revenge
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel
Metal Gear AC!D
Metal Gear AC!D 2

This is a very realistic scenario. The problem last year weren't mid and low sellers but top sellers. Barely 3 games sold 1 million. We know 2 multimillion sellers already that give a big advantage, not counting the increased numbers of games that will just sell 1 million.

Yes, last year we only had 3 million-seller titles if we count Monster Hunter 3G, and only 9 more games managed to sell over 500,000 units.

So far this year will probably have:

3 million

[NDS] Pokémon Black and White 2

1 million

[3DS] Mario Kart 7
[3DS] Super Mario 3D Land
[3DS] New Mario 2D
[3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland 3D
[Wii] Mario Party 9

Over 500,000

[PS3] One Piece: Pirate Warriors
[PS3] Resident Evil 6
[3DS] Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
[3DS] Mario Tennis Open

Other titles with no release date that could also be big:

[3DS] Tomodachi Collection (+500k)
[3DS] Brain Age 3DS (+500k)
[3DS] Animal Crossing (1 million if it is released a month before Christmas, a Mario 2D + Animal Crossing looks like a mighty combo)
[3DS] Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney (+500k, will it be released this year? Level 5 needs a big game and Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone won't be enough)
[3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (Nah, it will be a 2013 title)
[3DS] Luigi's Mansion 2 (Wildcard, +500k)
[3DS] Paper Mario (+500k)
[Wii] Dragon Quest X: Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku (Will it be released this year?)

Have I overlooked anything?

1) "If I was Sealed in a..." is a room escape game with girls in it. Since I dont have the game yet I can't say which is the main focus.

2) Love Plus is what you'd call a "dating sim." Level up your character's likability, use stat points to boost dates. There's actually not a whole lot of interaction between you and the girls onscreen, similar to Tokimeki Memorial series. Users are basically left to 'fill in the blanks.' Probably best for true role-players that can flesh out details out of dice rolls and such.

The funny thing is that neither are like 'dating sims' in the current sense. Most of those 'dating sims' which you also see labeled as Adventure are nothing more than Choose Your Own Adventures with insane amounts of dialogue. Very few developers go beyond this (in the PC realm), as the main appeal of these games is that it takes little more than a few artists, writer, event scripter and a few guys advertising to get a game published. In terms of sales it'll be interesting to see where these types of games seek refuge after the inevitable decline of the PSP (though that probably won't happen in earnest w/ these types of games till early 2014 at the earliest, considering how long they hanged on to PS2 until finally moving into PSP).
