Media Create Sales: Week 24, 2013 (Jun 10 - Jun 16)

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
There's a chart earlier in the thread. Eyeballing it, launch-aligned the Wii U is about 200K or so ahead. It shouldn't cross streams with the Vita.

It will cross streams with the PS3 though in the coming weeks I think.

Thanks, I missed the chart!

Well we are talking in a sales thread about potential games making an impact on sales, so those 2 games should be pretty relevant no?

You are right, even if I strongly believe that their impact will be minor. Probably Party could make something more, considering that it relies on the Mario party traditional appeal (unlike Fit that is more in line with the "Wii" crazyness not repeteable on the Wii U)

This was Nintendo DS in beast mode (constantly selling every week over 100.000 units during a period of almost 2 years).

It was sellouts for almost every week then. Makes it difficult to draw meaningful comparisons to weekly numbers, when the weekly numbers are directly tied to how many systems were shipped that week. We can just be sure that demand was > than supply for ~1.5 years in there. (The sellouts stopped with Golden Week 2007, but it was still until August before it came down to more reasonable levels.)

12./13. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) # <ACT> (Capcom) {2012.11.15} (¥3.800) - 3.669 / 294.666 <80-100%> (+25%)
LOL Famitsu. You are late!

07./06. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV # <RPG> (Atlus) {2013.05.23} (¥6.980) - 9.034 / 241.670 (-34%)
300k LTD is out of reach, right?

If I'm not mistaken, it'll still take around five weeks for Wii U to drop below PS3 - assuming it stays at 5K. Pikmin should hit around then. Might actually be fun to guess when it happens.

3DS is doing okay but it's trailing last year, and as others have mentioned, is not matching the DS at this point.

Of course it will catch up with last year with Pokemon and MonHun but I don't know if it'll ever reach DS heights.

Probably not, I honestly don't think DS success will ever be repeatable for any dedicated video game platform in any market ever again. Things have changed too much.

It doesn't have to catch up to DS if it provides an healthy environment for developers and it's doing just that.

No I don't think it has to, but it is interesting and valid to note the disparity between the two.

In other news, WiiU will outdo Vita's sales last year even with its abysmal current sales. They are two seriously hurting platforms.

Well the Vita at least has proven it's a viable platform for niche and semi-niche software. The Wii U can't even claim that.

Do you think for the time being that SE is is focusing on next gen consoles ?

The showings of XV and 3KH would seem to indicate that theory.

Square Enix has basically explicitly stated that their strategy going forward consists of:

1.) AAAA blockbusters.
2.) Mobile/browser social titles.
3.) Handheld/console-esque smartphone/tablet games.
4.) Subscription MMOs.

They still do a few other things (Dragon Quest on 3DS, HD Remasters, iOS ports of existing games), but it's pretty limited in scope compared to the above three, which are now the company's pillars.

Final Fantasy XV is a good example of the first.
FF Brigade is a good example of the second.
Deus Ex: The Fall is a good example of the third.
Final Fantasy XIV is a good example of the fourth.

Shame, as Bravely Default was great.

Shame, as Bravely Default was great.

I think that one still exists, but yeah, I suspect they will become a notably rarer breed.

Well, unless you count things like Deus Ex: The Fall to be similar, since they seem interested in handheld like games on mobile.

What was S-E's predictions for Gyrozetter? Isn't it supposed to be their big cross-media IP with a anime and everything?

I feel like the shrinking of the Japanese video game market is probably being caused by some different factors compared to the Western countries. I mean, the Japanese population is shrinking and getting older. For this reason I can't ever see the market getting back to its previous size. For example, In 1985, 21% of the population was 14 and under. Now only 13% of the population is 14 and under.

The entire thing is a big failure, they had a relatively elaborate arcade game which failed, the game failed, I have no idea how's the anime doing but considering the terrible sales of the 3DS game it probably wasn't really popular.

Pretty sure Square wanted this to be an Inazuma level success, so they must be quite disappointed.

I didn't mean to sound so defensive, still we'll have a clearer picture on the feasibility of reaching 150M when Pokemon releases.

YOu mean that it has a very dedicated, and rabid fanbase that is overblown by fans on Gaf when it comes to overall importance/sales power?

You sound mad.

Retailers impresions:

Azalyn:

The Last of Us - 38 units sold - Sold out, and that's more than Uncharted 3 sold First Day. Very Popular
Neptunia PP - 11 units sold
There's a little of movement for Sayonara Umihara Kawase.

GamesMaya:

The Last of Us on the top by far. Awaited title.
Second is Sayonara Umihara Kawase, popular in this store.

Tadapon:

The Last of Us - 50% sellthrough
Neptunia PP - 60% sellthrough
Sayonara Umihara - 30% sellthrough

Osakaking:

The Last of Us selling well. More than expected.

---

Monster Hunter hardware bundle is now available to pre-order according to sinobi (Sold out already on Amazon.jp). The standard version is available again for pre-orders, so that could mean Capcom increased the 600k expected shipment.

Sellthrough from that blog:

The Last of Us - 80% (Shipment above 100k, but it seems won't be enough for the week)
Idol Neptune PP - near 50%
Sayonara Umihara Kawase - 40-50%
Ro-Kyu-Bu! Lost Secret - close to 40%
Kuma-Tomo - more than 30% (pre-orders increased just a few days before the release)
Ninja Jajamaru-kun - 6-7%

How so? It only proves that the main series still has a sizable fanbase. Nothing has really changed for Persona.

P4G was a spin off. Not even a mainline Persona and it was on the Vita.

I'm rooting for the TLoU for 100k + opening. Just finished it. One of the best games I have played this generation especially for the story.

At this rate, by the time MH4 is released, it'll be enough to only make 2013 catch up to 2012...

Good thing there's still Pokemon X/Y.

Yeah I think I have to accept that Square Enix just isn't interested in making 3DS titles (more so if you count worldwide) anymore. Bravely Default was the outlier, and I'm not surprised if they're porting it to mobile. They do seem interested in releasing titles for Vita since it might be easier to have a parallel development with PS3. Bummer, but that's just the way it is.

for the first year ?

anyway TGS is gonna be interesting .
MH4 release or not.
I don't mean forever, I could see 4Bone getting say FFXVI, FFXV-2 and KH4 down the line. But I don't really see much chance for anything else and there's little likelihood anything else is in the works right now (unlike 3DS). I also don't see FFXIV, FFXV and KH3 all on shelves year 1 either.
