NeoGAF Top 50 Nintendo games of all Time

Path of Radiance was totally better than FE7, otherwise, great list.

Also, funny to see Super Mario Wolrd and SMB3 tied. The argument will never be settled.

Love lists like these. Never would have thought the way some on GAF talk about WW that it would get the 12th spot right behind MM. I really wish appreciation threads on GAF didn't get hijacked by haters so much.

This list confirms my belief that Super Mario is the greatest video game franchise of all time. To go on for so many years and produce so many consistent titles along the way, including two masterpieces this generation is incredible.

Also I find it so fitting that SMB3 and SMW tied, I think you really should just renumber it so they're both T-4th place. Same feelings about Galaxy 2 / 64 / Galaxy finishing in a virtual deadlock.

Cheesemeister parsed the results for me, but I'm guessing FF 4 didn't make it because you didn't include it's subtitle.

Well there's only one game known as Fire Emblem 4, so I don't see how any confusion could arise, but fair enough, the 4 is technically not in the official title.

Great list, I agree with the top 10. My only complaint is that Pikmin 2 should be waaay higher, Skyward Sword as well.

06. [NGC] Metroid Prime

Justice has not been served. Don't even get me started.

DKC is one of my favorites of Nintendo's series but having the original ahead of DKC2, JB or DKCR seems wrong. In terms of gameplay the original really has aged pretty badly while DKC2 fixes all of its major issues and more (while having PIRATES), Jungle Beat is this bizarre yet addictive experiment and Returns gets praised every second week here but it's still worth repeating.

Besides that I think this poll came out pretty well, though OoT has aged pretty badly for me and having both Galaxies seems a bit redundant even though they were both great games.

This and DKCR are th only real omissions if I were to be picky, but overall it's good stuf.

Also, Mario Bros. 3 > World & Galaxy 2 > 64 con-fucking-firmed.
:p

Edit: Holy shit, LeleSocho's post. How did I miss that? :lol
I think that this generation's games (Wii/DS/3DS games) need to stand the test of time before coming to conclusions about them.

I really can't see Galaxy 1 or 2 besting Mario 64 in 5 years. Also, DKCR was criminally omitted (I finished playing it in the morning, HOLY FUCKING SHIT, this game is AWESOME!). I think that with time games like Xenoblade, SMBWii and DKCR will go up, while games like Galaxy 1/2 and Zelda SS will go down.

Great list, even though I wouldn't necessarily agree with OoT being #1. I laughed at SMW and SMB3; it's only fitting they should be tied :p

The one thing that disappoints me, though, is the lack of Banjo Kazooie anywhere on this list, seeing as Rare titles count.

first i was like "Where the hell is BATMAN" but then realized its a weird "top 50 games that nintendo developed or published" :D

The sad truth for Jungle Beat is that not many people seemed to have played it which is a damn shame because its combo based platforming is one of the greatest things to happen to the genre and its never been expanded upon.
And DKC likely has the opposite approach, i'd wager it's the most played DK game of the lot so it got more votes than the rest of the series, i'm going to go as far as to say it doesn't just seem wrong for it to outrank the titles you mentioned , it IS wrong!

At least one of the Galaxies will stay in the top 10. Poll GAF at the end of this year and Xeonblade will move up. And in 5-10 years, SS, and 3d Land should move up as well. Its my general impression that the youngins LOVE SS. I've seen it myself. Its Magical Wii Sports Adventure to them. There is nothing close to occupying that space in their gaming diet.

I think the Galaxies will hold to be honest, there's a ton of love for both that hasn't really ever subsided. It reminds me of the response to the rest of the top 10 honestly (OOT, Prime, etc) Nintendo homeruns tend to hold their significance.

I agree with the rest though. DKCR, Xenoblade, NSMBWii are all games that'll definitely rise over time. And I agree with Skyward Sword falling too.

I think Galaxy 2 will stick around, but it won't be ahead of Mario 64 in a few years. Galaxy 1 will drop a bit.

Not sure about 3D Land. Way too early to say anything.

It's a good list and I respect your tastes.

But I really want to see Ocarina dethroned. Majora's Mask is a much deeper game. The time limit actually increases the quality of the game. The apocalyptic timer juxtaposed with the fairy tale characters give the game an incredible atmosphere. The best parts are not to see what the new take on the conventional dungeons are but interacting with the NPCs and assisting them in their detailed routines (the real-time element helps here greatly)

Nintendo's finest game as far as I'm concerned.

Also Twilight Princess is better than Skyward Sword, because it actually has a connected world, not the level-select-type structure of SS. Also the comments about "emptiness" in TP, while not without merit, are often exaggerated. Many of the game's most fun moments were in the over world; fighting the final boss, escorting the carriage, rescuing Colin, fighting King Bulblin , running away from a burning bridge, carrying an ill Midna, and there's the optional stuff like finding the cave entrances behind the bridge with moving gravity lifts, sliding up the cliff sides with the spinner to locate treasures near the north of the Castle , as well as the awesome secret moves and wolf songs. TP did have too much rupees, the wolf sections got a bit boring, and the difficulty was non-existence,

... but in SS to get to the few special parts, one must endure the constant recycling of the same levels; dozens of music notes, numerous stealth sections, escorting a character through most of a whole region again, finding hiding plant creatures, collecting water again and again, then there's the terrible waste of potential that was Skyloft. Maybe with 1/3 of the content cut, SS would have been a great game, who knows? I wouldn't object if the game's detractors only grew as time went on. Worst 3D Zelda!

Now that's odd. Expected it to be much higher. Only 18 points!?
Not enough people have played it, but quote me on this, that game will definitely rise in the future. I think it may even top DKC1; the game is that good; the most fun I've had with a Wii game ever (play it in single player with Wiimote+Nunchuck, 2 player coop is good, but unbalanced).

It'd be great to see Xenoblade Chronicles be higher next time we do this, in many ways it felt too good for a Nintendo game! With an elaborate story and the kind of exploration Nintendo rarely encourage in their games.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door > Paper Mario

Really well done thread. The quotes are a lovely touch. My mind boggles thinking how much work doing this must have been.

Pretty solid list, although Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Pokemon Black and White should have been higher. Good placing for Xenoblade.

Probably should have voted, huh.

You're nuts man. DKC isn't at the top because its better (it could be) its there because its such a great impact when it came out and its a good game as well. It'll move up but not anywhere that high.

I thought Galaxy was a lot more popular than 64, but I can't really argue against the order of those 3 games. It's like deciding which type of gold is the best, with Sunshine being a rusty silver.

I'm a little bit shocked that I've only played 41 of the top 50. (Missing Skyward Sword, Wave Race GB, Mother 3, F-Zero GX, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem GBA, Fire Emblem GCN, Paper Mario 2, Pikmin 2)

Please tell me one of them is Wave Race for GB, because I haven't even heard of that one.

Edit: 47 for me by the way, but I will hunt down this legendary Wave Race GB and make it 48.

It is, yeah. I've heard of it and I did know that was the first installment in the franchise, but I had no idea it was supposed to be any good. I did play Wave Race 64.

What the fuck happened to Kirby? Highest game is 74?

Mother and Pokemon had a good showing. Something has to break up the monotony of Mario and Zelda. And as expected, the list has a lot of "firsts" that are surpassed by sequels or don't hold up, but it happens.

But man, no Kirby? Do people really not like those games? Even StarFox, FZero, Pikmin, and Advance Wars carved out a spot in the top 50.

45/50 for me, 46 if Waverace was actually Waverace 64.

5 Marios, 2 Zeldas, 2 Metroids and a Yoshi on the top 10. Interesting. Glad Earthbound and Mother 3 ended up on the top 20 - well deserved.

I've finished about 75% of them.

Also I like the fact so many of them are recent games, Nintendo gets a lot of hate recently for developing more casual game, but there's definitely been a few classics in the last few years.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door was my #1 choice, I'm actually surprised it didn't place higher on the final list. I feel like I recall several other people giving it the #1 position. At any rate, a great list! Super Metroid being so high surprised me a bit, I expected it in the 7-10 range for some reason.

Paper Mario 2 wasn't as fresh though, it's still a lot better than the first game because of the awesome audience feature, the more imaginative levels like the murder train mystery, the glitz pit, the boggly woods and the general way it plays around with the formula, although simply being better is often not the criteria for whether it's placed higher or not.
