Searched for it, but didn't see a topic about it. Newtype's 30 best characters for each decade, made a few months back. I thought it was interesting.

I was surprised by how many I recognized--pretty much all of them, except for some shit like elemental gelade.

It's also odd how the quality of the shows the characters are affiliated with dips as the seasons pass. In the 80's you have Lupin and Nausicaa, in the 90's you have Shinji and Rei, and in the 00's, you have... Lulu from code geass and a couple of those Gundam Seed bitches. :lol

I'm a nerd.

As someone who would really like to get into anime for some reason, I really should watch more anime. Nausicaa sounds like a cool name - Maybe I should watch that.

I see that Eva series wins though, lol.

I'm honestly surprised that L from Death Note didn't make the top 30. But Lelouch is definitely a good choice for #1 for the 2000s.

The only one I agree with in that entire list of lists is the position of Lelouch. The rest just seems to be biased towards overrated anime such as Evangelion. Lack of Death Note is fail for starters, as is Edward Elric not being second to Lelouch.

Edit - How the hell is Monkey D Luffy 22nd!? Thats an outrage! Sure there are better but he deserves to be top 10 at the very least. I also just noticed no Ichigo! No Gurren Lagan!? No Yugi!?! What kind of list is this!?

As it should be! I am also shocked to see JJ at #30 for the 80's... I never knew Zillion had much, if any, popularity in Japan.

It really does say something about the evolution of anime, at least to me. For the 80's you have a phenomenal #1 female character who is strong, personable, and full of hope, and a damn good #1 male character who is likable, charismatic, and exciting. For the 90's, you have like exact opposites: a male who is pathetic, unlikable, and spineless, and a female who has no personality, emotion, or real character.

No "maybe" about it - Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind is like one of the best things to ever come out of the anime/manga scene. I might recommend going manga over anime, though: the movie is like 1/6th (or so) of the main story, and it can be easy to see it and come away not really appreciating it. It's still a very good movie, though.

Itsuki (Haruhi) and Haruhi (Ouran)? That's a surprise I wasn't expecting.

Hinagiku (Hayate) isn't really that surprising though...

K-on! got robbed-ROBBED. Nineteen, wtf, Yui should have been number ONE-ONE!

And where's Mio? This is no treatment for the best anime ever.

Edward Elric got robbed. And how the hell did Cagalli win? I'm halfway through Gundam Seed right now and she is by far one of the most annoying characters in it.

I think what I find disappointing about the 00's list is how the inferior Haruhi Suzumiya ranked above the superior Haruhi Fujioka.

Haruhi should be in the most hated anime character list.

Why is Code Geass popular? I thought the series sucked.

At least I'm not the only one that didn't like Haruhi.

Can't really agree on the Code Geass thing though... I'm sort of a sucker for clamp =/

But good putting Nausicaa & Lupin on the top. Right where they should be.

I think the manga is much, much better than the movie--and I actually liked the movie. It's just fantastic.

No Kamina, Simon or Yoko and Luffy and Spike being way too low (Not to mention Luffy being in the wrong decade) invalidates this list.

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
don't recognize many of these.Surprised to not see some Michiko & Hatchin, Planetes or Serial Experiments Lain characters.

CLAMPs only involvement in Geass is character design, but it is an interesting show.

Also Asuka at number 3? *kicks over magazine stand*

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Gundam Gundam Gundam Gundam Gundam Gundam Gundam

It's like a shot gun, throw enough characters at the wall and some of them will stick.

Still Cagalli lol.

I wonder what their criteria was for best character? Because unless I've missed something in the OP, I can only conclude that Newtype has not seen Baccano!, Gurren Lagan, or Death Note.

What the fuck balls?!? Shinji Ikari is at #1 for the 90s?!? That's horrific. I mean, that series is terrible to begin with, but he's the worst character in it. Every episode I just wanted to bitch slap him.

Huh?
I was going to say that perhaps they counted her appearance in Advent Children, but after double checking, I see that she is in the 90's list, so that really doesn't make sense.

I guess if its on a wall scroll at your local game or hobby shop, it counts as anime.

I'd read the manga first. The two are sorta, but not really related. I agree though - Nausicaa - may be the best female character ever.

You and I think alike. Shinji is a bitch.

T&A, ambiguously gay pretty boys, giant robots, non-generic protagonist (by anime "standards"), sheer unpredictability, shitloads of cheap thrills, and a huge train wreck appeal.

Why wouldn't it be popular?
