Totally agree. There were plenty of interesting ideas in the DS games, but there were design issues that no amount of Nintendo polish could adequately address. It's simplistic and wrong to just say "gamers hate change", when plenty of us loved games like Adventure of Link, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker.

There are aspects of ST, and PH that I REALLY like, there's just that one really bad design choice in each that out weighs all the good the games do.

For PH it's the Ocean King Dungeon, the combination of the stealth aspects, the time limit, and the having to redo it all over each time you return to it, just RUINS PH.

For ST, it's the damn traversal of the overworld. I get that they were trying to compensate for people disliking sailing (I liked sailing). For me they really just made things way worse. Now I'm not only moving slow but I'm stuck to a set path, with enemies I CAN NOT avoid. In every other Zelda game if I don't feel like dealing with some enemies I just run past them, not in ST. You have to deal with all of them, and there's some you CAN NOT kill and are instant deaths. Then added onto this to collect shit and other things you have to do escort missions (the worst gameplay element in video games, I hope one day developers will just drop this awful idea), where you have to use the even slower speed setting on the train. It made getting around and doing side quests a chore, instead of being fun.

Everything else about the games is pretty damn good, and ST has some awesome dungeon design at times. Just those 2 design choices hurt the overall experience so much.

Fuck I just found out Aonuma said that there could be one single timeline. That don't make sense.
Just because it's a split timeline doesn't mean that either branch isn't part of the whole. Unless you like the idea of literal legends or multiple canons and this just rained on your parade.

I'm too stupid to understand fully what you just said. All I know is TP and WW existing in the same universe doesn't make sense to me.

They're on alternate timelines. WW is what happens after you defeat Ganondorf in OoT. TP is what happens after you get sent back to your childhood.

Why do you do this to yourselves? Why would Aonuma's view matter?

Lots of you have spent more time thinking about this supposed "timeline" than he has; you guys are clearly much more of an expert than he is.

I know all this but then Aonuma recently said that there could just be one timline.

Pretty certain he considers the trunk and split branches as being “one timeline” even though after OoT the branches might never meet again. What he was referring to was more than likely the idea that all of the existing and future games might exist on either of the branches (or the trunk, for that matter) of the known one.

I didn't get to throw this theory out there before during the timeline talk because I was too busy with work to post it. I do wonder if the events of OoA and OoS actually cause the timelines to re-merge. It might explain some of the discrepancies between some of the later 2D games, since it would take aspects of both timelines and try to make them fit.

You have Twinrova fucking with both time and space (which you would have to fuck with to actually change the seasons) and then comes along Link and he starts fucking with them as well. I guess you could put each game on a separate timeline and their combined fucking around brings the timelines together some how, and allows the Oo games to follow one another.

Just a crazy theory I thought I would throw out there, though I'm sure some one is going to freak out about it.

Huh, I caved in and bought Spirit Tracks after seeing how low the price had dropped. So far so good, the game is really surprising me in a positive way. Though the overworld is a huge miss and difficulty is still non-existent Zelda's lines are great, the first it's enjoyable, minor tweaks are a welcomed addition, controlling Phantom is promising and the music, oh my, THE MUSIC. So catchy. I'm only past the second visit to Tower of Spirits but most of the soundtrack so far is quite amazing.

Field music in Spirit Tracks is amazing.

I haven't made another attempt at the last boss in a while. I guess I should stock-up on fairies to make the process less painful... Wait, are there even fairies in ST? Or just potions?

The puzzles in Spirit Tracks are also challenging enough to make you actually think without making you frustrated enough to turn to a walkthrough. And the music is certainly among the best for the portable games.

That damn train, though. That stupid, awful train.

viciouskillersquirrel said:
I for one love riding the train. I like tooting the horn in time to the music.
I think you mentioned doing this once before, I remember this because it caused me to try it, not gonna lie it was pretty fun, 2nd best part of train travel behind the music itself

So I was playing Twilight Princess earlier, was it ever explained why the Song of Healing is in the game. Wouldn't that imply that Twilight Princess is in the Majora's Mask universe since the old hero says: "Let these teaching of old pass to you..."?

spirit tracks entire existence is justified by the existence of the overworld theme. it might even be the best in the series.

Started playing Spirit Tracks again because I need someone to play until Super Mario 3D Land comes out. I finished the first dungeon and made my way back to the tower. God, the train sucks. I was seriously hoping that my memory was just making it seem worse than it was, but unfortunately it's just as bad as I remember. Whoever decided to make you dodge one-hit-kill enemies while on fucking rails needs to be slapped. Even without that, getting anywhere takes forever and it's not like there's much to do en route. I'm going to just skip all of the sidequests and stuff this time (well, anything that I can't do without going out of my way on the train, anyway) and just power through to the end. I looked at my last save file and I have 13 hearts in it. That's incredibly low for me in a Zelda game. That means I skipped practically everything optional, and I wasn't even making a point to do that last time.

Anyway, shitty part aside, I'm actually enjoying the rest of it. I've never really minded touch screen controls and there are enough changes in Spirit Tracks from Phantom Hourglass to make them more functional anyway. (Double tapping to roll is so much better than drawing "tiny circles on the edge of the screen" or whatever they wanted you to do in PH. I just ended up wiggling my stylus to roll.) I also don't have much trouble with the flute.

I've forgotten a lot about this game already. I totally forgot that the first dungeon item was a fan that created whirlwinds. That's kind of cool. It's atypical, which is great. It's not a bow or a boomerang. It's something new.

I'm dreading the last part of the tower already. I had so much trouble with it the first time. :p Oh well.

This shit right here is harder than anything in the 3D Zeldas. I never want to hear people say Minish Cap is easy again.

edit: oh shit I found an exploit using the pegasus boots. godlike!

Looking back the final dungeon and boss in Minish Cap were pretty damn good, possibly my favourite final dungeon and one of the tougher final bosses in the series.

True, but it's the kind of difficulty in which I find no enjoyment. Beating those fuckers didn't feel like I had honed my fighting skills, I simply felt relieved and glad I wouldn't have to face them again. Beating them was more a matter of patience then skill.

Also, Minish Cap is my least favorite Zelda.

The one-hit-kill stuff in the DS games would have been an annoying design choice even if the game allowed you the input precision of buttons and d-pad.

The sweeps and stabs of a stylus aren't really the best apparatus for ducking past phantoms at the last moment or adjusting the controls of the train to escape enemies.

awwwwww fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Minish Cap is one of those games where the final boss has, like, 8 fucking phases. and when you die, you have to start over from the beginning. So tedious.

...could it be? Someone who agrees with me? Amazing.

Actually, I prefer it to Phantom Hourglass, but Minish Cap was still very disappointing to me. Nice music, though.
