Good shots. Oddly enough they give me the biggest nostalgia trip about my shithole of a hometown, Modesto.

Heh. Not to say your town looks like a shithole.

Heh, cool.. I went to that resteraunt when me and my family went to HK on a trip around Asia. I've got a picture of my brother learning to use chopsticks for the first time there.

But it was the employee parking. It was just such a cool little scene seeing all the bikes parked and chained by the back entrance.

That shot is great. I really want to visit China someday soon.

Wow, this is great! I can never take action shots -- they always turn out real blurry.

I've never been to the races before; did you place any bets?
It helps to have a dslr/slr so you can control shutter speed. :)

Oh yeah I bet -- that's half the fun! I usually go to the races every year on the Saturday of the Kentucky Derby (so I can also bet on that race too). There's a group of us that go, and the ladies of the group will make and wear hats. The race park has a hat contest each year and last year one of my friends won 3rd place. We also have a friendly competition to see who can win the most money that day (we all start out with the same amount). The minimum bet per race is $2, so $20 will last you the whole day even if you don't win anything back. Not too bad for a whole day of fun.

I'm definitely set on a Nikon D70 for my summer trip back to Vietnam. Will get it at the end of this month when my exams are finished. I'll be looking your way with help in getting to grips with my first DSLR. :)

You've taken some great shots man.

Wow, you're from Modesto? I'm in Tulare County (Fresno, Visalia); just as much a shit hole as the rest of the San Joaquin Valley. =PpP

That's pretty cool that they have events/contests outside of the racing. I'll definitely have to go sometime; sounds so much more enjoyable/economical than casino gambling.

A couple of the ones I took at a fencing competition which I took part in a few weeks ago. Taken on an old-school non-digital camera (with black-and-white film, to boot), hence the loss in quality from having to scan 'em in. Not quite up to the standards of some of the other guys here, perhaps, but it's practically the first time I've picked up a camera, so I'm happy with what I've got.

I really like this image for some reason. Perhaps because it perfectly captures the setting. It also looks like it could be an album cover, don't you think?

Nice! Going on a trip makes for the perfect time to bite the bullet too. :) When the time comes, let me know. I've got tons of great links for info on the D70/D70s. Also, when you get some free time, check out the dpreview forums. I've learned so much there; plus if you ever have a question, they'll have an answer.

What lenses do you use AirBrian? I use D70 myself, with the kit lense and a couple of old Nikon lenses (which were from my film camera, which took some of those shots I'd shown...oh I do miss the dark room). As you can probably tell, I need a decent macro, although my main subject is usually architecture.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that you use the D70 from another thread. I use the kit lens, Nikkor 70-300mm D ED, and a Nikkor 50mm 1.8. I mainly use the kit lens for any wide-angle shots. For a kit lens, I've been really happy with it, even if it's a little soft.

I usually have the 70-300mm mounted when I'm out on hikes or sightseeing. It's a slow lens, but the dslr conversion makes it a 105-450mm, which is a nice range for me. It's definitely better than the cheaper "G" version that's also on the market. You mentioned macro lenses...I picked up the 5T and 6T close-up filters for this lens and I've been very satisfied with the results. Close-up filters are certainly cheaper than the $600 105mm or $350 60mm macro lenses (although not as good). :)

The 50mm 1.8 is my favorite lens of the three. This is mounted most of the time. It's a fast lens that's perfect for indoors or night shots. This lens is also very sharp, and for only $99.99, it's a super value IMO. I also picked up the 1T and 2T close-up filters for this lens, and I'm also happy with the results. I've heard that the 50mm + close-up filters = a very good poor man's macro lens. And for $150 total, I'd agree. It's certainly holding me over until I can pick up the 105mm someday. I also love this lens because of its fixed focal length -- it really forces you to focus on composition rather than zooming and such.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely check those filters and lenses out. It is a dilemma though, spend money on lenses, or saved up for travelling where I can do more photography?

I've decided that it doesn't matter if I'm good or not at taking pictures... It rocks that we're all able to capture our experiences on film now. We have the most well documented generation ever and that is a cool thing.

Thanks! It was a lucky shot. I was sitting at the top seat of a bus while it was waiting at the traffic light. :)

This thread is really great, some people here really have the skills to make very professional pictures!

I just bought a Canon 100-400L telephoto lens in time for a visit to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia with my 20D. These are my favorites:

Y'know, if there was a giant Katamari in the background it would make an excellent box art for the next game. :D

Keep the photos coming. The thread has been great thus far.

Nice stuff, AirBrian! I've always preferred nature and animal photography to the street life and architecture subjects that interest others on this board. Were they taken with your 70-300? Did you go hand-held or shoot with a tripod or monopod?

The camel shot is really tack-sharp. Did you have any kind of macro attachment for the frog shot, or can your lens focus that close? Of the eagle shots , I like the first...it's sharper, and the second one has a distracting highlight behind the eagle's head. The squirrel looks like he's on a commando infiltration mission.

I'll be doing a ten day backpacking trip in New Mexico starting next week with my 20D, and I'm going to lug my 100-400L (it's really heavy) along with my 17-85. I'm hoping to get some nice wildlife opportunities out there.

Thanks. All were taken with the 70-300mm except the blue bird, snake, and alligator – those were with the 50mm. And I’d love to put up the full-sized image of the alligator because this one does it no justice, but it’s 1.5 MB. All shots were taken handheld. I was actually planning to take a monopod, but I forgot it on the way out.

I was about 20 ft from the camel, and the 70-300mm is very sharp from about 100 to 200mm. Not too bad for a “prosumer” lens. You can see the difference with the gorilla shot though – I was about 100 ft away and at 300mm, and it is definitely softer. I did not use any close-up filters for the frog, but like I said, I used the 50mm, so I’m able to get within 12 inches. With the 70-300mm, the closest I can get is about 3 feet. Yeah, I agree about the distracting highlight in the second eagle shot; I just love the eagle’s pose.

Have fun on your trip! I was in Albuquerque about 5 years ago for the ballon festival. I also got a chance to go up to Sandia Peak too. It’s really gorgeous in that area. I’d love to go back with the D70. I look foward to seeing your pics. :)

I know how you feel. Every time I resize a photo for posting on the internet, I want to include the disclaimer, "But it actually looks even better than this!"

Damn guys and gals, some truly awesome looking pictures in this thread.

Here's a pick of my Mother and Father's dog Kelsey taken with my Canon A70:

Kelsey-Web-4.jpg

She's a Shelty.

About two years ago I kept her for them while they were on vacation. To make a long story short, I lost her when my buddy was bringing in some computer parts for me. Anyway, she was gone 12 days. I found her early one morning around 5:00AM. She was right where we had left some food and some familiar clothing (for the scent). To say the least, it was a merry Christmas for all involved. :)

I love the contrast. What was your B&W conversion process?

First i made a channel mixer adjustment layer at 30red 30green 40blue (monochrome)

then i copied the image and pasted it on top with a color burn layer property. Since that makes it too dark i used curves on the top image to brighten it and voila.
