Xbox has been in "wait till next year!" mode for over seven years. During this time, they've certainly delivered some quality titles, but none of the industry defining hits they used to deliver during the Xbox 360 era. They'd pump up a Mass Effect, a Gears of War, a Halo 3, or a Fable 2, and then it would land - right when they said it would, and the games would deliver, providing the highest caliber titles in the industry. Now, when Microsoft lands a hit, it always feels like its a bit of a surprise. Forza Horizon 5 was way bigger than folks thought it was going to be. Flight Simulator was way better than we thought it was going to be. Gears of War Tactics was way better than anyone thought it was going to be. Their big games still land well - Gears 5 is good, Sea of Thieves is good, Halo Infinite's core is good - but, their biggest games always feel like they're just "good". They never seem to fire on all cylinders. It feels like the games they hype up arrive late and fail to really deliver. So, it feels like Xbox is always behind the position where they should be, despite delivering high quality games.
When Xbox snapped up Zenimax, investing billions into their first party, it was expected that now, Microsoft was getting serious. Xbox was a big priority, and they're going back to the Xbox 360 era. That was over a year ago. Since then, Halo Infinite disappointed and imploded, all of their games have been delayed so 2022 is now basically Xbox taking a year off, leaving them with only the stink of Halo Infinite's abysmal failure to grab mindshare. Xbox is left with Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War Tactics as the only real first party exclusives they landed in the first two years of their console. It seems we went back to the Xbox 360 era, but the tail end of it, when all we got was Halo, Gears, and Forza. Microsoft need to get their ducks in a row and start delivering great titles on a consistent basis, or they'll blow the massive gains they've made so far. And with that said, we're back to: wait and see what happens next year. Maybe 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 is the year Microsoft delivers.
