Scarlett Johansson offered lead role in Ghost in the Shell live action film

In that scene she is fully extending her muscles past there peek. Super flexing.

That isn't how she normally looks.

The only way I see Scarlett working is with a ton similar to Terminator 2 Sarah Conner (which wont happen because "Girls with muslces? Ewww gross!").

Either way, she's still on the short side. The Major was shortest (ignoring Aramaki) but wasn't dwarfed by everyone like ScarJo in Avenger, nor did she wear heels all the time. I guess creative filming can overcome that though

I wouldn't classify it as big either but her hard body was definitely a hallmark of her movie portrayal. Unless scarjo does some Chris Evans training she doesn't look the part. Jessica Biel would be better or hell even the MMA chick from haywire. I liked haywire.

She couldn't even get Wonder Woman while sleeping with Superman....

Only thing is that her body is mechanical, so she doesn't need to be big to use strength in the universe.

I dunno. I'm much more worried about the writing than the casting.
She doesn't need to be big but tone... Like a perfect athletes body is how the film version of kusanagi looks. Jessica Biel is apparently preggers now but she's not big. Gina from haywire isn't big. They just have tone athletic bodies. Can't say I feel the same way about scarjo.

I think people should probably be more concerned about how the narrative/thematic content will be handled over who has been cast in the lead role when it comes to this property.

Faora from Man of Steel,
Man she was such a badass I would have been fine with WB just casting her again as Wonder Woman.

Do whatever magic they do with Tom Cruise? SarJo can work but they could be more inspired with their casting, it's clear they want that box-office security. Troubling sign honestly.

At this point representation matters more to me than anything else. Not many people are in my camp tho, and that's fine.

Yeah no doubt normally she's pretty sleek and slender, the juxtaposition of the two makes an impression during the scene. I don't think an actress like Scarlett Johansson has anything to worry about in terms of her body for this role, but Kusanagi can be pretty menacing in her physique at times. It's evident during the street market fight scene in particular. In any case I have no issues and think she's perfectly fit for the role and she'd do a great job...just that the Major can be massive at times! :)

Though it might not turn out well, I'm excited to know that this is in the works. I don't think Scarlett is too terrible a choice, all things considered.

Most of Faora's screen presence is because of the actress and the costume she is in. Nothing to do with her body.

Costume definitely played a part but just her look was intimidating imo, She has beauty but she had a really stern look as well.
Definitely makes me think Motoko.

Zod was a big dude and had armor as well but I bought Faora way more than him.

Existential themes or political? All I know is, whatever the movie will end up being like, there's going to be a lot of NSA NSA NSA!

Throw some Hulk cg on her if a similar scene comes up!

Luc Besson keep making these crap Hollywood wanttabe action movies with odd leads. From time to time he got lucky and hit the jackpot (maybe 1 in every 20 movie he produced).

The one thing that pissed me the most in Lucy is Korean gangsters in Taiwan. He didn't want to offend the Chinese market so he used Korean gangster instead of Taiwanese...in Taiwan.

The whole movie makes no sense, no sense.
Not saying that it was good (haven't seen it myself, but still not expecting much), just that it was profitable. Between the success of that film as well as her playing Black Widow in the MCU films, those are the main contributors to why Hollywood would be courting her for this role.

Is there anything specific to the character that makes it so she has to be Japanese?

I'm not that familiar with GITS, so I am genuinely asking.

I thought they did a great job adapting Edge of Tomorrow from the original Japanese light novel to an American movie.

We are talking about full artificial bodies, so in principle she can look whatever she want. But is has to be efficient so her bodies are evidently pretty ripped. Hell, Batou even suggest Motoko should take a stronger male model instead, so based on that most of the cast could be anything really.
I still think this should be played by someone else though. Maybe even a lesser known actress and you just take a famous male "lead" for the trailers and trick audiences into the movie :p
But my main problem is that I don't really feel Scarlett in such a role, even though I really like her in non-action movies.

My thoughts on Section 9:
Aramaki = JP
Motoko = JP
Ishikawa = Caucasian (I'm thinking e.g. Russian, his body is mostly still human so you can still make guesses)
Batou = US Caucasian (he's a former Ranger at least)
Togusa = JP
Pazu = JP
Borma = could be anything but I guess again Caucasian but as mentioned he could have chosen any cyborg body.
Saito = Would have said JP but I think he's actually from South America?

Ha yeah no doubt it's doable, that kind of scene isn't doable in live action without CG anyways! Motoko is pretty muscular but I'm sure they'd adapt appropriatly for the movie. It's not like that's what will make or break this movie or anything lol. Plus I doubt she'll be naked in the film, it'll be PG-13 and you'll like it! :p

good credit (by proxy)
Whens the last time these rich movie producers gave a true artest like 80-100 million to fuck around with and blow? David Lynch's Dune? This is gonna be the safest movie ever and it's gonna suck terribly.

Scarjo's a decent choice, but if I had it my way, I would had choice the actress that played "GoGo" in Kill Bill volume 1.

Not a single thing. Even if you want to say "her name" she's in a cybernetic body that isn't based on her original looks. Her name isn't even her real name but "obviously an alias". Hell by the end of the manga she was in a male cybernetic body.

On a slightly related note, some months ago a photography team completed an homage to the GitS intro (features some nudity, as did the original animation):

I have no opinion on it one way or the other, seems like it was fun to do.

As for the movie, I'd be more interested if they included the deleted scenes from the manga (with Rinko Kikuchi, of course).

She's not Japanese.

I'm aware, but most people seem interested in an Asian actress who also has weight in Hollywood. And I guess it's not clear to me that everyone has assigned the lead female role's to have the specific nationality of Japanese for the context of the Ghost in the Shell story, or that it actually matters she is specifically Japanese, Asian, or of any particular race.

But as I understand it, you think specifically the nationality of Japanese is important.

Now I really don't get the outrage.

Eh, even if being Japanese was absolutely crucial to Motoko Kusanagi... like she was raised in an internment camp and racism shaped her as a person, she'd still be white in the adaptation - or at the very least not Asian.

It's not something that you couldn't transpose to other countries at all. It's about politics, it just happens to be in Japan, it's in no way core to the story.

Ehh, Japan is pretty damn core to the mythos of the series. It's practically jingoist Japanese nationalist fan fiction at times, really. The entire conceit of the franchise is that Japan would be the pre-eminent world power and the world's greatest economy (or at least right up there with China's) by the 2020s, due mainly to a combination of the results of World Wars III and IV and Japan's massive technological advantage over the entire rest of the world. The USA would fall apart into disparate states, and Japan would become the superpower in its place and the shining beacon of prosperity to the world. This sets up many of the conflicts as 1) its politics have become rife with corruption in the wake of its success, and 2) the country becomes the primary destination for refugees and illegal immigrants, primarily from mainland Asia, causing major strife within Japanese society.

This can all be re-written to relate to a different country, sure, but by doing so you'd be changing pretty much everything about the franchise's worldview and identity. You'd still have the cyber cop drama and such, but the context and messaging would be totally different from the original. That's not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, mind you. It's just a thing.

Pretty sweet. I'm guessing this is still in production?

I'd watch it for laughs.
