Garbage is a really strong word. I've played truly awful games, D3 is not one.

D3 had good gameplay. Action is my genre and I've played a lot of it. It just wasn't polished due to the obvious low budget. I really liked the gameplay the most in D3. Everything else, not so much.

eh, I don't know if I'd call it good. more like serviceable. I zoned out a few times, thankfully the game is pretty easy.
still, behind the jank lies a soul unlike any other. and one of the most beautiful final boss in gaming.

A primer for anyone wanting to get into Drakengard. Some vague spoilers that don't really give the details of the events:

It's not even joking or exaggerating about the descriptions of things and characters in it. Your party members are an actual pedophile and cannibal. And the game isn't you playing the bad guys or villeins.

I still wonder how SE green-lighted D1 lol

For ya'll that didn't have had the chance to play Drakengard and Nier but interested in knowing more, a let's play of both is available at lparchive.org.

An ongoing LP of Drakengard 3 is available at somethingawful.

And remember kids, I.Hear.A.Sound. RIP AND TEAR!
Oh wow, there is some great stuff in that fanart section.

Now this is a story all about how
My world got flipped, turned upside down
Let me take a minute, it won't be too hard
I'll tell how I became the number one hit man in Midgard

In East Caerleon, born and raised
Guardin' the goddess was how I spent most of my days
Waltzin' round, killin', stabbing for fun
All the fools who came rushin' in to sack the kingdom
When a couple of guys who weren't thinkin' too good
Tied up a red dragon in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and took a slash to my back
And said "Hate me if you will but we must have a pact"

I reached into my chest and when my hand came out
There was a glowing little orb with all my anger and doubt
If anything I could tell this act was insane
So I yelled "DRAKENGARD," and I turned off my brain

So while all people involved make for a combination of pure sex and I'm hyped as fuck, I still firmly believe Nier was lightning in a bottle and cannot be replicated in spirit due to it being what it is. Much love for Nier, from me at least, comes from how surprising and oddball it is within the framework of a seemingly traditional ARPG. It's very deceptive. And you can't really pull the same trick twice without losing some of that spark, even if what you end up with is outstanding.

So yeah. I want Nier 2 by Yoko Taro and co with Platinum Games. And I also don't want Nier 2. If that makes sense.

I feel that this concern is unwarranted.

It may be the same IP/franchise, but Yoko Taro doesn't do things half-assed. All his games are a reflection of his current self, and as long as he is ever changing, you'll probably be deceived by your own expectations that this is supposedly a Nier game.

Oh shit. Somethingawful LPs of all of them :D I'll make a point of reading them at some point. The few that I have read have been funny as hell. I also love the word filter that site has for non-members :p

The funny thing about this announcement is that it was actually leaked by this insider guy in the e3 predictions thread. I can't recall his i.d (will look up and try to post his original post), but I think he also mentioned a few other games that ended up in the conference.
He was decent enough not to spoil the reveal by saying it was only his 'wish' that this game was at the conference.
Now we know you lied and I'm grateful for that Mr Insider!

They're all at lparchive.org, done by the same guy. It's great to watch his slow descent into Cavia-fueled madness.

He also loves Deception, so you know he's good people.

Dark Id is clearly leagues above everyone else when it comes to doing Let's Plays. His Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and Final Fantasy X LPs are also fantastic.

If you intend to read the LP of Nier, I recommend reading the thread so you get the comments. It's nice to see 240 pages of people gushing over Nier.

Final Fantasy VII? Last Guardian? Shenmue 3? Literally no reactions from me other than a mild chuckle that they actually exist. Seeing this thread pop up on GAF? Shouts of "oh my god" and "WHAT" echoing through the room. Can't even imagine what my reaction would have been were I able to watch any of the conferences live.

I can't honestly believe that Nier of all games is getting a second chance. The first game sold like ass, it's from a publisher that you'd expect nothing but disappointment from, most of the key people are back (just need Emi Evans) and rather than being given a shoestring budget and a few interns to make the game they're handing it out to Platinum so the gameplay can match the quality of the story. This has made my PS4 purchase worthwhile.

That description is great but it missed the part about his sister wants to bone him hard. Wasn't it sort of censored in West?
No, apparently just a miniscule detail was lost in translation and voice acting. When sister's mind gets read and all her thoughts are revealed to everyone, "oniichan" is used instead of the more normal "oniisan", and the voice acting puts emphasis on that. Otherwise identical script.

RIP AND TEAR?

Drakengard 2's story has numerous flaws, but the way how Caim, who I may remind some of you, was the protagonist of the first game, was turned into a slasher horror villain, was fucking inspirational. They really didn't change his character all that much either! Tormenting Manah is his lifelong mission

Short article on IGN, I think there's some new info in there:

  • The theme of the game is "agaku," a Japanese word that means to struggle/desperately fight your way out of a situation. (According to the translator.)
  • There are three main protagonists in the game: the girl in the trailer (who is a completely new character), a young boy, and a character not yet revealed.
  • The three protagonists may travel together at times, but not always. (This is still being decided.)
  • The development team is toying with the idea of allowing players to experience multiple playthroughs using each of the main characters.
  • The reason the game is on the PS4 is because of the platform's high specs.
  • One of Platinum Games' goals is to have the game run at 60 FPS.

Emi Evans is the singer who defined Nier's OST. She also contributed to Drakengard 3's.

If she was back for 3 then I don't see why she wouldn't be for this. They probably won't announce it until they have a deal with, but seeing how the game is still in early development the deal probably has yet to be made.

Apparently, it was confirmed that she'd be working on the game in the Dengeki article.

Sounds very promising (rough, quick translation):

Q: Speaking of Nier, it’s hard to forget Emi Evans who used this future(?) language to such a great effect (in the music of the game).

A (Okabe Keiichi): Her voice is really incredible, isn’t it. Of course we’re thinking that we absolutely want her to be involved this time as well. In the last game, almost all the songs had lyrics, the number of songs (with lyrics) in the next game is still undecided… And yet, I think that Emi’s voice is indispensable to Nier, so please anticipate it everyone.

Yup. That scene was such a crazy awesome moment. You, the player, already knew just how much bad news Caim is, but having him appear then and there, clearly as an antagonistic force, was excellent.

Fantastic, Nier just wouldn't have been as special if it weren't for Emi Evans.

It's Platinum. I'm not worried about the game's performance or gameplay at all.

Very few of Platinum's games come close to having a consistent framerate, so I still have doubts about the performance - of course, I'd much rather they have the ability to do as many ridiculous set pieces as possible while keeping the base gameplay at a relatively stable 60, than compromise the entire game for greater consistency. Though hopefully they can do a little better in that regard simply by being able to work with less ancient or laughably obsolete hardware compared to their previous retail games...

To give Platinum some credit, they never really hit 60fps because there is normally too much going happening on screen. Seeing as this will be an ARPG and with a less deep combat system I'm sure they're more likely to hit 60fps, even more so with the newer hardware.

They really need Emi Evans with Okabe's music. If they can get Emi then I look forward to about 7 remix albums of this game's soundtrack.

haha you really think there's going to be less things on the screen in nier?

those dudes are gonna find a way to flood the entire goddamn screen with bullets and make the frame rate tank to single digits

and it will be glorious

Excellent. If it's not running at 5FPS, it's not Cavia. Slap it on the back of the box as a bullet point.

I look forward to bullet hell shmup Nier.

I want to try out Nier due to how highly it's recommended here, but the combat looks quite mediocre in my opinion.

I'm trying to find cheap copy for PS3, but I only can find late $30s and early $40s for a used copy :(

Indeed, not only did the first game have huge God of War syle bosses, some scenes were literal bullet hells.
The game was actually pretty smooth despite all this, graphics weren't mindblowing but the draw distance was huge, it had some really wide open environments.

Technically it was more impressive than Drak3. Better lip syncing, better AA, and some other minor stuff.

I wish Nier would get released on PSN or even PC so I could actually play it, it's actually impossible for me to get this game for less than €50 and that's a bit much for a gamble :(

Hard to get excited for a sequel when I'm u able to play the prequel.

spoilers in link for those who haven't played nier:
seriously, this fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DprF-R-U_xg#t=3m40s is one of my favorites 'cuz of that

i really am super excited to see what platinum can do with the concept because it is insanely unique in both an aesthetic and gameplay manner

S-E, pleeease, give us a rerelase (doesn't even need to be a 1080p 60fps remaster, just rerelease that shit) and/or a PC version for the first game, that's all I need.

Preferably the PC version, so I can have this masterpiece on a backwards compatible platform, but PS4 is good enough, and also much more likely, since the sequel is exclusive.

Damn, I got it really cheap about 6 months after it was released (less than 20 euros), which isn't surprising considering it bombed.
At first I ignored it because of all the terrible reviews, then some people on another message board convinced me to give it a shot. It's definitely worth full price though it's not everyone's cup of tea. I honestly don't see a fan of ARPG's or even RPG's in general not liking this though.

I bought 2 copies of NieR at $14.99 3 years ago, give one to a friend. Then I found out that I like the ost so much, I paid $30+ for it on playasia.

Sometimes life is like that, I missed out on Pikmin 3 and Folklore.
