Extensive new details on Zelda Breath of the Wild from Game Informer (Maybe spoilers)

I only want to know one thing without spoiling everything else: any mention of where it takes place on the timeline here?

Article mentions Aonuma saying it takes place
after Ocarina of Time
. Put spoilers in case someone wants to be completely blind. This is all that he has said far as placement goes officially.

It's clear Nintendo put a lot of work into developing this world. Now that it's done I wonder if we'll be seeing additional quests, and assorted DLC making their first appearance in a Zelda game. If any series would be ripe for it, it's certainly Zelda.

I'm going to have to buy a Switch, aren't I?

Exactly. Gaurentee we will see a hook shot like device for some sort of grapple hook. The traversal mechanics and physics system are asking for its.

The problem is, the game require you to get the early runes because you can't leave the Plateau otherwise. But after that, everything should be optional if you can tackle every shrines and dungeon in any order.

I'm getting a bit worried that there won't be (m)any traditional items returning in this game like the hookshot or boomerang if there aren't any chests in the dungeons (as far as we now know at least). Seems like all the focus is on collecting more (breakable) weapons, clothing, food and horses so far.

Seeing as combat and gathering are such a large focus in this game, it would have been cool to see at least a few iconic items come back as permanent gear that have abilities to aid in combat or item gathering. Would have been a somewhat fresh approach considering most of them used to be tied to puzzle solving and traversal mostly. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

I have to admit that the more I hear about this game, the more worried I'm starting to get that they might have abandoned too many typical Zelda defining things (like items, themed dungeons, etc.) for the sake of the open world, free-roaming approach, even when I really applauded their decision to go back to the series open world roots at first.

Edit: thanks for the many reply's people! Guess my worries are somewhat unfounded, going by what most of you are telling me. I would miss things like the boomerang if it's not returning (even though it might indeed be one of the the things that the orbs will "buy" you) but I agree that the larger sense of open world adventure is more important than a returning item or two (or themes in dungeons arguably). I'll be there day 1 one to check out how this game turned out along with you all, worries or not.

I used to be right there with you with my worry about lack of traditional items and dungeons but look at it this way: it isn't necessarily the items or dungeons themselves you'll miss. It's the functions and it seems like the function is still there and the form is just different. The overworld and getting to the dungeons is the dungeon and the runes with their myriad of uses are the items. The items that don't fit as runes probably show up as consumables, Ala the fire/ice/bomb arrows, elemental rods, so nothing to say we won't get a boomerang weapon. Weapons have a dedicated throw button afterall.

The best part i like is that you have to place markers on places of interest by yourself, 100 seems like a good number of markers you can place.

Yeah, I can't wait to explore different places and get my ass handed to me and watch as my map fills up with Skulls to denote difficulty and Xs that automatically mark your deaths, lol.

Everyone keeps talking about Boomerangs and you know what I realized? Goriyas have never been in a 3D Zelda. In fact, Zelda 2 remains the only game so far I can think of with a "realistic" Goriya design, since it isn't top down with deformed sprites. With enemy weapons being a big deal in BotW.... could we be seeing Goriyas in 3D for the first time?! Pls Aonuma!

Not invincible doesn't mean that the master sword will break into dust just like the other weapons. Being a special weapon, it will probably deplete itself after extensive use, and you'd have to recharge/reforge it again somehow. It wouldn't make sense that such an important item would break and disappear forever if you use it too much.

What if we are totally wrong in assuming the MS is safe, taking it's role in Zelda for granted and you actually can destroy it forever. After all, it isn't needed presumably to beat the final boss right from the get go so what if this is the end of the Downfall timeline and if it gets destroyed on the lead up to Ganon or during that fight, you get the alternate bad ending?

I think the Master Sword won't be restored to its proper unbreakable, holy state until the post-final boss ending. Before that it'll be very much imperfect. Maybe if you beeline for the final boss and don't do the rest of the story, the Master Sword won't ever be fixed!

It is pretty much confirmed
child timeline
because of
Ritos
being confirmed to be in the game and maybe even
Beedle the shopkeeper
How do either of those things confirm that?

They could both happen
in the downfall timeline
.

Yep. Thats another thing.

People fail to realize this game will have many many items that arent exclusive to dungeon use or overworld use. You can use them for anything.

They just had an interview where they discussed you can do one task in several different ways in this game. Its different than, "You only can use the deku leaf and only the deku leaf to get over these lasers."

Yeah. I instead of only using the deku leaf, you can use fire or bomb arrows to catch an up draft with your paraglider, or use water arrows then cryonis to create ice pillars, or magnesis to create a bridge over the lasers.

I love Weapon durability when its not from random drops and when there's an inability to repair items. Weapon durability when it's planned out on an encounter by encounter basis in this way gives incredible depth to relay value and planning out future runs. Not only do you have to excel in combat and puzzle solving, you have to wonder if you're getting the most efficient use out of those items as well.

I'd agree that weapon durability would suck if it wasn't designed in such a way to make it seamless and add tons of variety to your tactics and playstyle.

Let's say you are saving a big 2 hander for a tough foe but end up getting ambushed and have to use it up too soon? Well now you have think on your feet and try something else. Perhaps guerilla tactics with a spear. Well placed bombs, retreat while firing arrows, magnesis the nearest heaby object to clobber him? The list goes on and its going to make every combat encounter fresh.

All my fears about open-world games are still present here... Keeping my expectations in check once again.

It's definitely going to be a different Zelda game experience. They're giving us a lot more freedom. It's like they're rebooting Zelda here. I'm optimistic about it.

Also I'm on media blackout...starting now.

Needs to be posted here too because holy fucking shit

How long after release do you think it will take someone to march straight to Ganon and finish the game? Hours? I’m thinking hours till it’s on youtube.

I'm not a fan of the franchise, but I'm incredibly excited for this game. I'm seriously considering picking up a Switch just to play this.

Zora
are also confirmed and
Beedle
is in Minish Cap and Skyward Sword too and not in anyway locked to a timeline. It's just another example of a character they can pop in wherever they please.

The only one with those are this one so

Because somehow it's also impossible for them to come into existence in another timeline? lol

Hell, I think you're actually thinking
adult timeline
anyway because that's the only one with
Rito
right now. And since the
Zora are extinct there
AND
there's no hero before Wind Waker
the two co-existing in a game of that timeline is unlikely.

Has Nintendo said anything about giving more stock to places like Amazon? What are my chances of actually getting one of these in a store on release?

First console in forever I haven't been able to get a pre-order for.

Man oh man , cant wait to get this game :)

This will be my third day 1 zelda (mainline/non-HD Remaster on home consoles) in a row.

So can someone confirm if we're indeed getting traditional large scale dungeons in this game? Gameinformer doesn't seem to explicitly say one way or the other so I'd just like to make sure.

They're traditional in the sense that they're big and feature a central mechanic that must be utilized to get through, featuring a boss at the end.

They're not traditional in the sense that you're not getting a unique item from them nor will you find a compass.

This all sounds pretty good to me. The changes to the main dungeons in particular sound cool. I honestly don't care if the main dungeon count doesn't end up being that high. Considering how many damn shrines there are, it's not like this game is going to be lacking for content.

I mean sure, if you're one of those crazy people who only plays these games for the dungeons then maybe you'll be disappointed but I don't expect that'll be a problem for most people. WindWaker (despite having a low dungeon count) is my favorite game in the series because of how much I love the world and characters in that game. It's just so goddamn charming.

Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game since WindWaker that has really piqued my interest and I can't wait to play it.

It seems there are some pictures of the inside of the Dungeon, can someone describe how it is?

Edit: Found it, it's on zeldainformer's forum.

I should probably go ahead and pre-order the Wii U version.

Zelda is probably the last franchise on Earth that could get me to buy hardware by itself, but as far as what I'm interested in the Switch is pretty much nothing but Zelda until Mario Odyssey comes out in the fall. I'm not dropping $300 on something I'm probably gonna let collect dust for six months for lack of games (this happened by my Wii U but more for lack of time).

Maybe if Nintendo announces something I like in regards to Virtual Console I'll reconsider.
