Climate Change and what you can do

1. Fucking vote

2. Contact your state legislator and ask them to improve upon the policies that your state currently has given the announcement to withdraw from the Paris agreement.

https://www.ourstates.org/#engage/

3. Call your Senator by dialing 844-6-RESIST and tell them to support action to stop climate change.

4. Find out when your Senators and US Representative are holding town halls. Show up and tell them to protect the climate.

https://townhallproject.com/

5. Get involved with People and Organizations that are working on environmental justice and climate change.

6. Switch to Green Energy

Bonus

Way to go OP for not mentioning switching up the diet to a more plant based one.

Also donate to NRDC, Natural Resources Defense Council. They are a fantastic non-profit dedicated to preserving the environment but also mounting legal defenses against this administration's actions.

I have them set up as my charity for Amazon Smile.

You have to search for them as their not a default option but I like knowing that some of my purchases which no doubt don't help the fight also give back.

Call it global warming.

Explain the greenhouse effect to people who doubt reality:

Greenhouse effect: short wavelength solar radiation hits earth surface, is reflected and turned into IR radiation (=heat) of longer wavelength, and instead of exiting the atmosphere completely (back into space), part of this radiation is reflected by greenhouse gassses (such as CO2 and methane) and stays inside the atmosphere. Thus it gets warmer. More greenhouse gasses = more warming. The sea can absorb some CO2, but not as quickly as we are releasing it.

Im gonna assume you have a personal issue with Tesla since you are willing to plop down money for a i3.
At this point you can't get a model 3 for at least a year. I presumed he can't afford an S because if you can it's a no brainer decision.

I've taken it a step further and learned to photosynthesize my nutrients.

7. Stop eating beef.
Really wish people would take this more seriously. The impact of certain aspects of agriculture belong to the biggest sources of pollution out there. Reducing meat consumption is such an easy step to take, and makes a massive difference.

Done. Started earlier this year (beginning of February) and I've been surprised just how easy it was.
I don't miss it at all actually and discovered a ton of incredible dishes already.

I've been with an electricity supplier that's 100% green energy for 6 years now.
I don't own a car and I don't want one. Got an electric bike to get to work, etc.

Right now I'm saving up to replace my fossil fuel heating system and replace it with a heat pump setup. Will take a little bit though.
The next step will be solar panels on the roof.

Beef or meat in general? Seriously asking.

Do whatever you can but yes beef is the biggest one to stop. Eat chicken if you have to... but honestly, vegetarian (or even vegan) is the way to go. Buy from local farms if you can etc. Think of carbon footprint when you do your groceries. Don't buy fruits/vegetables from the other side of the world if you can

Stop eating beef and lamb, and limit consumption of chicken, milk and pork. People don't seem to like that solution though.

The biggest impact most individuals can make is to stop eating meat, especially beef. All the other tips are great as well.

People never really tend to favour the most effective option. I second this, and as far as milk is concerned, it's tonnes easier to drop than people assume.

Legumes, grains, and starchy vegetables are significantly more friendly for the planet as a source of calories.

With the caveat that if a food is trendy, it's probably best to stay away from it as well (avocados and almonds, for instance, are incredibly resource-intensive plants.) The reality is that most "is X better or Y" questions when it comes to the environment are not as cut-and-dried as we'd like (for instance: paper or plastic? Washing dishes or throwing stuff away? et al.)

But yeah, as a general rule limiting animal consumption seems to be a pretty strong personal element to reducing your carbon footprint.

Milk would probably be a lot harder for me to drop than beef. I usually drink a glass every morning, mix it in with my whey powder when working out, and use it in my cereal. I could easily drop the first two (whey powder mixed with water is not great, but whatevs). Cereal would be hard. I guess you'd have to replace it with Soy or Almond Milk, and that stuff tastes like vile ass shit.

Cow farts. Also they take up the vast majority of agricultural land that could theoretically be used for forests.

We had creatures the size of buildings, small cars and trucks roaming the earth in the tens of millions if not billions for millions of years farting and shitting everywhere and eating every damn thing in existence. Earth will be okay, but I do agree on stop eating lamb, yuck.

Climate change has never been about Earth being okay. Earth is going to be just fine for another few million years, at least. It's about whether or not it's habitable for humans.

You cannot be fucking serious with this lol

I feel like fighting to stop people from eating meat is a the quickest way to stop people from joining the fight to save the world. They should focus on stopping cow farts not stopping us from eating meat cause humans will not stop eating meat.

How do you stop cow farts without stopping eating beef?

Wife and I decided against having children so I'd say we've done quite a bit already (although we still do quite a bit besides). Secondary benefit is that we don't really need to worry about the environment beyond the next 40 years or so. Pretty liberating but has to suck for those who do have children.

I am uneducated on this....so forgive my ignorance...but what is wrong with beef?
High methane emissions. Require tons of feed, causing habitat destruction. Drives up the global prices of grain. Requires lots of water. Poisons our water with their shit. Drives the antibiotic apocalypse with their zoonotic disease threat.

Same with all animal agriculture.

yes, this is the correct answer. don't just tell people "cow farts" or they won't take you seriously.

I agree here, at least for now. Also the anti-meat argument is usually brought on with some sort of condescension that turns people away from a genuine interest in trying to make things better.

This and the 'dont have kids' strategies are things that are very hard to accept. They may be affective, perhaps the most affective, ways to help prevent climate change but the things that are deeply ingrained in a culture, civilization, or species are the ones that are most difficult to stop. So they may make a large beneficial impact, but they are requests that turn off a lot of people by how difficult they are.

Be Australian, Kevin Rudd was the one who brought the Paris idea up 10 years ago
And look what's happened to the climate debate in Australia since. We're probably the second worst country following the US right now when it comes to political climate change denial. If Abbott was still PM, this would've been a trigger for our withdrawal too.
