Gamer Jesus: PlayStation 5 vs. $500 PC with 4-Year-Old Hardware: Benchmarks & Graphics Quality Comparison

Hahaha Geordie you shouldn't shit talk when you are so so very wrong.
You said exactly
"Fenix rising, watch dogs, call of duty. Take your pick, I don't care"
My response
"Do all those games offer 120 fps modes
Your response
"Yes and released after ps5 came out. Not back compat."
Later after this exchange you edited your original post to state what ones are 120 fps and what ones were not.
You then replied to me like you had no idea what I was talking about and that my reading comprehension is lacking when you edited your post to make it seem like that
Pretty low. Maybe you should worry less about cussing and more about being a decent person, fessing up to your mistakes which was minor and not an issue until you edited your post to make it seem like you were right all along and played dumb about it.
Yeah I caught that as well lol. Pretty hilarious to be honest, especially after being a frontline warrior in threads that were pitching ps5 to be superior to PC. All the geometry engine, ssd bandwidth, L3 caches, etc, posts have all been nullified when you have guys like Tech Jesus, who use real world examples to prove a point. Not the typical "praise the architect Cerny!! We love you! XOXOXO!!"

Haha yeah exactly. Geordie does seem like a smart guy for sure but what's he have to gain by ignoring that he edited his post after our exchange to pretend like he's right. It was a very innocent mistake of no consequence if he just admitted to it.

You are arguing edited posts where I was also working on my day job. Get a life man, I do more than just read GAF.

Arguing half edited posts is a bit NAFF if I a m on a lunch break and doing other things.

Speaking of which, its dinner time.

He might not be clueless but i find his youtube channel a clickbait joke.
People like to talk shit about Linus's channel here, but that is what a real PC-tech channel looks like. Linus videos are very honest and transparent this on the other hand, yikes. I can't stomach it even for entertainment sake.

whats the point of wasting over 30 minutes of life on benchmarks thats guy don't even know what settings he testing (dynamic resolution vs 1080p, also some bizzare sentence like tearing is new for consoles) with conclusion that console with rx5700xt performance level graphic is comparable to 1060/1070 gpu wich is close to rx580 last gen x one x level of performance ;d this whole video is one big embarrassment

It's just highlighting that a low end cpu easily handily outperforms ps5 cpu. Otherwise it absolutely was a troll video no doubt about that. 1060 can not compete with ps5 gpu not even 1080 can.

even this which is ofcaurse possible would double check it and not use any of his benchmarks, in my opinion it's not that easy to outperform even quite low clocked for current standard ps5 cpu with reduced cache as ps5 api is very light

It´s only 4 cores but it´s Ryzen 3 vs a mobile Ryzen 2 and slower. How is the 3300x against the 2700?

it proofes that in a cross gen game efficient use of the Consoles Capabilitys did not happen. Those CPUs will destroy most modern Desktop CPUs at least in terms of PS5 because it has a full array of supportive Chips that handle I/O with especially Decompression.
We will see it in the next wave of Exclusives and if we are lucky Third Party Titles. And there where we do not see it we can savely assume that Devs did not use the PS5s low Level APi to full extend .

PS5 will be far superior to equivalent PC hardware and configs. If Devs have the time/ Money to do so. If not we can see all Benchmarks from highly dissapointing to mediocre .

Interesting vid, but pretty predictable results. I’ll probably never have a top of the line PC but I keep a mid tier laptop around to play a few strategy games and other exclusives.

Ok I don't understand the numbers for PC (red line) unless it has VRR .. does it have VRR ?

Frame times without VRR should be fractions or multiples of the monitor rate eg for 120Hz monitor (0.00833333333sec, 0.0166sec , 0.025sec etc)

- the PS5 graph has frame times including 0.0041666sec - that's 240 Hz !) wtf is going on with that

A like for like comparison will never happen since there aren’t full settings menues on console or the same preset quality/performance modes on PC.

They explained it but it was the most technical part, understood about half of it. Iirc it was like this, to catch all frametime issues and torn frames they had to record it in 240fps since the GPU pumps out frames over 120fps too, which made it torn twice on the same image. But check the video and try make your own conclusion, this is not my area, I just bought a gsync screen and forgot all about both torn frames and frame times :p

It’ll be difficult to show why VRR is a big deal I think, a 60fps video will destroy everything that was fixed and a 240fps recording showed at 60fps on youtube would be 4x slower. Tricky.

There is no stopping to this salt mill. Even if you ignore all the stuff from Steve's analysis that console kids can't even hope to comprehend, just those frametimes alone... Yikes!

Consoles are proven once again that they are terrible at what they're designed to do. No wonder the ps2 from 20 years ago is still the most sold console, total stagnation of the console userbase while everything else in the gaming industry has boomed.

But muh' ps5 has cache scrubbers and can render fonts extremely fast! *Posts UE5 demo and 1 of the 3 Demon Souls screens that are being regurgitated over and over*

funny , but chache scrubbers did not realy came into play yet.. if they are you will notice it... trust me.. you notice it.
This whole Thread is so funny. It is like you see someone betting money on a Event that already has taken place and he bets on the one that lost already. Ok for tiny bit i get it - theres this Video out there trahing the console trash PS5 and lighting it on fire and so on and so on. Okay i get it - everyone has his history everyone is diffrent i see it.
But i cant realy beliefe and iam not even seeing it that you Clowns for a minute realy believe that PS5 is comparable in general to a GTX 1600 .

I mean there are so many good AAA Third party Games coming out this year wich will proof just like Games like Watch Dogs 3 and AC Valhalla that PS5 is indeed even more powerfull like an RX 5700XT / 2080 Super/ RTX3060 ..
It will happen and you know it. So why invest so heavily in a (already proofen) false Statement? Is it like you see someone got beaten down and People start kicking him on the Ground and you yourself get a few good kicks in "for good measure" or its just now in this moment it seemed funny?

Because in all the future Threads about DF and NXgamer putting new Games to the test - this very Thread here will be a Goldmine of Crow servings.
But maybe your just Punks and dont care about Consequences and just life in the Moment.

Did you honestly just compare the ps5 with an rtx 2080 SUPER, when the regular 2080 non-super is much more powerful, especially in raytracing. Even funnier comparing it to a non existent rtx 3060, which would also be more powerful than ps5.

Also, in case you missed the entire point of the video, Steve is showing that a weak, cheap CPU can achieve 120fps better than ps5 can, even when using a very low end GPU. If you don't understand this, then you might as well exit the thread at this point.

The only anoying thing is that this video is out there and we have to live with the PS5 moking now for a while. But thats just how it is with Propaganda ..
So , be calm.. PS5 will IN THIS Year prove that stoopid of a propaganda Video wrong.
I finally watched the video, this is worse than I suspected.

They did not even measure the frame rate of the PC and the PS5 in the same manner
- on the console side they measured the vsynced output
- on the other side they measured the reported framerate on the PC itself, no vsync, no frame rate cap

That cuts from measuring the high frame rates above 120fps (which they note).
That also makes the drops much more dramatic since the frame rate always drop from one divider to the next (5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 60, 120 are the only values possible on the scale)... so if the game runs between on average 90fps (between 120 and 70, with dips above and below) you'll see a graph with a series of jumps from 60 to 120, maybe a couple of frames at 30 - the blue mess) instead of a varying line like they show on their 1060 graph (the red line):

ugoXXFF.png

The graphs would probably look very similar on both machines.

Assuming the game is more CPU bound and does not use a lot of threads (very possible) the 4 cores, 4.3ghz boost clock would explain how the machine with the 1060 performs in this game... but I suspect it would not "outperform' the PS5 if they had measured the same thing on both machines, which is strange and can't be an error on their part because I have seen these guys go in other videos and generally they know their stuff, it looks like a conscious choice not to displease their usual audience.

Anyway, I though GN was above that kind of BS.

PS5 will be superior to those Cards in comming Games - yeah i predict that. You dont seem to understand how big Cernys Adjustments to their RDNA² Variant have been and how much there is potential wich is not even tapped in.
Their Geometry Engine on their Chip is far beyond what VRS is capable of and their 100times faster I/O will play out nicely. In Fact it plays out nicely already because it must be the major reason why PS5 is pulling ahead of Xbox X even in this early state of the Gen, despite being weaker TF wise...
If you keep that stance of yours you in for a heavy ride - PS5 is so much ahead in terms of I/O and fast access to Ressources that we should see once per year a good jump in effectivness in comparision to PC GPUs.
But there will be the usual anomalys , be it a certain engine simply running just better on Nvidia (just like the one from AC V is running a bit better on AMD) or of course the Third Party Dev that cannot or doesent want to spend the time or Money to make good use of PS5s low level API. Its much faster but less effectiv if they use the wrapper high Level API on PS5 just like it was on PS4 Development. Devs who make no or only little use of PS5s low level API will never tap into the real power behind PS5.
This will bring us Titles like War Thunder on PS5 wich runs on my PC (Ryzen 5 1500/ GTX 1650 Super) still better than on my PS5. Yet PS5 Version has only recieved a "60 FPS" Mode and is 4k native. So it runs on PS4 Detail settings wich were on PS4 already low in comparision to PCs. On my PC it runs buttery smooth with all things on High. But Gaijin is not the Benchmark for a Developer and their Game is not for PS5s Power.

Luckily those Titles will be, even without knowing it 100% , reveal themselfs by cross examining them with contemporary Titles wich run better while being graphics wise more demanding. The very same MEthod was sufficient enough to point out that almost all early PS4 Third Party Titles were not programmed efficiently - therefore painted the Picture of PS4< GTX 750ti ..
oh and i almost forgot - you will not order me around in here. Or out there - Peroid

This is the problem. You're talking about predictions and theorycrafting and imagination about stuff in the future that is based on nothing tangible right now.

Gamers Nexus is testing REAL ACTUAL GAMES with a clear and transparent methodology to look at a specific aspect of gaming.

These things aren't comparable and you have no grounds to criticize it on that level because it's just not relevant.

What lies?

"It's equivalent in gaming performance to a mid-to-high end gaming PC from about 5 years ago."

Is just wrong if intended as a general statement.

This sounds wrong to me. My 1080ti can't run Valhalla as well as PS5.

The guy found a selection of a couple of games that run at higher frame rates and do so more stably than the PS5 does and then extrapolated that to make a video about how the PS5 is weaker in gaming performance to a "mid-to-high end gaming PC from about 5 years ago" which is just false. A lot of what he says in the video is fine, but his conclusion is bonkers.

I say this as someone who owns a 2016 "mid-to-high end PC", a 2020 "mid-to-high end PC," and a PS5.

The comparison is interesting and really not all that controversial at all. If we take the most demanding game of the three tested, Borderlands 3, GN finds that a GTX1070 Ti (essentially a GTX1080) matches/exceeds the PS5 in the 120fps mode. DRS can distort things but at least for Borderlands 3, DF states that the PS5 120fps mode maxes out at 1080p, so that's enough of a like-for-like comparison for this test. According to TomsHardware, a GTX1080 is less than 10% shy of the RTX2060 SUPER performance in Rasterization. We have also heard from DF that in Watchdogs Legion, the PS5 performance is roughly matched by a RTX2060 SUPER with RT on. GN's conclusion roughly lines up in that angle as well.

However, I do think the PS5 GPU architecture has an edge over a GTX1080 when it comes to purely GPU limited scenarios, like for games rendering at native 4k at equal to or less than 60FPS. Maybe the CPU in the PS5 owing to the lower clocks is the weaker link of the console? Love to see more testing done on this.

As for the statement "It's equivalent in gaming performance to a mid-to-high end gaming PC from about 5 years ago" I think this is harsh lol. Granted the GTX1080 was launched in 2016, but was it considered a mid-to-high end card back then? Plus will be interesting to see what was considered a "mid-to-high" end CPU in 2016, and how the performance in those chips lines up with a Ryzen 3300x.

Consoles cost $400. They are good at what they are designed to do. The fact is you couldn't buy a PC for that price to do the same thing. Try building one brand new for $400 with a decent controller? Buying 2nd hand parts isn't a fair comparison because in due time 2nd hand PS5's will be $250-300.
Also why test only 3 games? Why not test 10? Hmmm? Maybe because the results might be different.
Let's see if he's such a clever twat that he does the same test with the same hardware in 18 months time with 20 games. I bet he shits his pants and doesn't do it.
Also why focus on 120fps? That alone should set alarms off as to what his agenda is. PC has long championed high frame rates like 120fps. Consoles on the other hand until this gen were mainly 30fps and occasional 60fps. 120fps on console is virtually unheard of. Devs have never prioritised heck even bothered with console 120fps. Rushed and tacked on 120fps modes aren't something to really compare when PC has been doing it for years.

I am watching the video and don't understand what he is doing... ryzen 3300x is not 4 years old cpu ? 1070 was 500usd 4 years ago... what's the point... and that pc is not 500usd even now. Not even if You summarize bare used pc parts and You still need to add peripherals (since console includes controller and is a full package aside from TV). And he is not doing exact same settings comparison...
Recently I am starting to dislike his condescending and smug way of talking and looking down upon everything and everyone.
He is one of those who criticize everything and jumps on hate bandwagons first (or creates it).
3080? "oh nvidia bad corporation asshole out to get ya!" "Not impressed with gpu thermals!"
Ps5? "That hot ram, console is garbage" "It's barely as fast as 1060"

You just can't make this guy happy. I am a pc gamer with 3080 but I am just as much a console gamer (ps5 yet to get here)... and yet he is sometimes the worst of pcmasterrace.
He really does everything to shove it down console users throat that 500usd ps5 is in fact "SHIT" and worse than 500usd 4yo pc? And that ps5 memory gets hot even though it's fake controversy since it does not matter...

edit: He is very knowledgeable but I don't give a shit about some component getting hot unless it is a problem. I don't care about flatness map of a gpu die chip...
Some of his MSI bashing and "fuck You" to corporations is great and very justifiable but after watching him for so long, You will notice that this is just what he does.
He sounds like a prick tbh. Fuck him.

Retards acting like a 3 year old PC can't wax a XSX or PS5 :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Consoles are for cucks.

No, they are for people who want to play video games at a reasonable price, or play the exclusives on them.

Surprised your account has lasted this long with such idiotic shit.

You would have had to spend around $1,500 in 2017 to not even quite match the performance you can get from a PS5 or XSX and that's assuming you could get a GPU at MSRP.

I believe he explained why he went with these games, because they’re targeting 120fps and aren’t vsynced. Comparing PC games with capped 30fps games would make zero sense, you wouldn’t see where the power ceiling is. And if updated BC games aren’t enough, look at the Dirt 5 comparison instead. The settings are different anyway and things will improve going forward so don’t take things so seriously, he said he’ll return with raytracing when more games are supported too. New build then, there is no RT on a 1060.
See this as a showcase that your old PC might actually still have some juice left instead of as a showcase that your new console is weak. You probably payed 4x as much for your old PC anyway so the outrage is strange. And it’s not like anyone will look at this video and build a 5 year old PC.

Yeah I think this is ultimately what triggered people. It’s an unnecessary thing to say and the prices don’t match either and nobody who is a PC gamer will ever say that it’s not more expensive than consoles. This is essentially what you have as a PC gamer when you’ve gone past the line where you feel like you need to upgrade. PC is always better in performance but it’s also always more expensive. There is no use dodging that. I have an over clocked 1080ti that I’ve been planning to upgrade for quite some time. It cost me roughly $1000 3.5 years ago...

Now is a really good time to sell that 1080ti, prizes are crazy. Maybe sell the whole PC as a package.

I usually sell my old GPUs cheap to my cousin, so it’s planned to leave me, just need to find something to upgrade to.

I actually preordered a 3080 but cancelled it after the AMD event, then when AMD’s raytracing performance went live I wanted a 3080 again, but then it was impossible to find, and now there are rumors of a 3080 ti or super.

The rest is alright, 3800x and a m2 drive, it delivers without RT at least.
