Jeff Goldblum What GIF by The Late Late Show with James Corden

Were there any Chinese-speaking people involved in the making of this film/comic?

The comic was made by white guys.

This movie stars a Chinese born lead, features Tony Leung who is one of china's most popular veteran actors and the main characters sister is played by a Chinese actress who speaks fluent Chinese.

It features entire swaths of dialogye spoken in Chinese which many Chinese speaking audien e members have confirmed is accurate.

So..... yeah

Any projections for shang yet? I just hope it does well enough that marvel doesn’t delay eternals
Pretty sure it’s looking at a $75-$85 million opening weekend which is fantastic considering the original projections.

I have to admit, I’m not a fan of most of the Marvel films released over the last decade (I do enjoy some of them), but I’m quite excited to see what Chloe Zhao does with Eternals.

I just watched this today. Wow, I liked it a lot!
The final battle was a bit too erratic for me but everything else I loved.
Also enjoyed some of the political jabs they threw in that reminds us we are living in a post truth reality show. lol

I'm sure they have a huge Chinese American team research and contribute to the script.

Born in Hong Kong, growing up in Canada, and moved back to HK 9 years ago. I was surprised how much they made it right on the traditional Chinese, and Chinese American culture. From the living style, the believes, the family dynamics, also the way we talk to each other, mixing both Chinese and English sentences and phrases, they just feel so right. When Shang-chi and his sister speak Chinese(Mandarin) to each other they sound so natural like they were a Chinese family.

And for some people argue about the Asian or Chinese representation this film brings. I understand what they mean. I mean, I have lived in Canada since 1997, whenever there's a movie with an asian lead character me and my brothers would be super excited to go to the theatre to watch them. Like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Jacky Chan's Shanghai Noon, Jet Li's Kiss of the Dragon, etc. But to be honest, they are nothing like Shang-Chi. In those Jacky Chan and Jet Li's films, they always play this stereotype, fresh off the boat Chinese person doing action and kicking butt because that's the representation of Chinese, under the shadow of Bruce Lee. But Shang-Chi is an Asian-American, who's grown up in America, and he is a part of the community of the American culture. He doesn't have the representation of FOB Chinese, because he's always been around and grew up with everyone in the city. For this group of Asian people (like myself), their identity falls in between the East and the West. Just like Ronny Chieng says in the film "I speak ABC." <- This actually represents the identity of American-born Chinese.

I think Shang-Chi did something really special for this group of people, it feels like Shang-Chi really help people to understand the culture and life of their Asian friends growing up around them.

And yet they agree to use the wrong pronunciation of the character's own name? I believe the actors are Chinese -- I get that -- but the pinyin spelling of the character's name should be Shang Qi. Shang Chi would be pronounced Shang Chur (or Cher). The whole thing is silly to listen to.

Watched it on a whim today with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Really good showing and nice change of pace from the usual scenery since it deals with a setting I'm interested in. Glad they didn't really hold back on the visuals near the end there. Also, probably has my favourite solo movie antagonist.

Made me realize Black Widow really was just awful for me and an anomaly, lol.

I'm not Asian but I saw the family dynamics and the phrases they used and knew it represented Chinese-American culture. Just like AAVE is unique to African-Americans, I understood the back and forth in language.

I don't know, maybe watch a movie instead of relying on outrage YouTube?
Maybe watch the video before you call it outrage?

I don't have much interest in MCU movies(I'm curious about Blade and how it will stack up against the 1998 movie) anymore and independent reviews such as his might raise my interest.

Movies I actually want to see I watch reviews of afterwards.

You have no interest in the MCU but love to watch videos that shit on the MCU and post them in almost every MCU thread.
OK

No. he's the main character of his own story. This review is purposefully omitting context and twisting the description of events to fit their agenda and make it look more woke than it actually is. This is definitely an outrage youtuber like ManaByte ManaByte said.
If you have some examples I'd like to hear them.

When the EFAP crew takes on this movie I'll likely see if Nerdrotic is being as deceptive as you claim.

Set the Labor Day record and came in HIGHER than projections. Yea that’s a flop.
Didn't see them claim it would be a flop, only what a flop could mean for Eternals and MCU direction.

Let's see about the legs, shall we? Black Widow started off strong and took a big dive.

Shang chi isn’t a side character his in the movie almost the entire time lol
I said "almost".;)

The review gave the impression the side characters take a lot of screen time. If Nerdrotic is clearly wrong to push a message, I'll definitely keep it in mind when I watch other reviews from him.

When the EFAP crew takes on this movie I'll likely see if Nerdrotic is being as deceptive as you claim.

For example, the sequence in the arena he says that Shang-Chi's sister beats him with a super kung-fu. Shang-Chi was surprised by her appearance there and tried to deescalate the fight the entire time. He actually goes toe to toe with her but isn't as serious in the fight as she is because he just wants to talk and warn her about what's going on. The nut shot is true though but it was a literal cheap shot as Shang-Chi put down his guard since he thought she finally wanted to talk. The following scaffolding scene does have the sister saving Katy at the last second but Shang was fighting the goons the entire time to let her escape. He even makes it there to grab her but loses his grip on her as I recall.

The side characters get their own plotlines but it's definitely not more screen time than Shang-Chi himself nor are they elevated above him. Their stuff is handled in a handful scenes sprinkled throughout the film and is a fraction of the run time combined. If you really want me to break it down then I can but I think it's better than you see the film. It's definitely worth watching.

Interesting but then there still stuff like the sister teaching herself martial arts and still be as good/better than the trained Shang-Chi or the Awkwafina character learning to shoot bows so rapidly that tests my suspension of disbelief even for superhero movies.

Well, the sister started self-training at the same time as Shang-Chi does. She's allowed to watch him train but receives no instruction from the others. So she views what's going on, mimics it, and develops it on her own. If you can believe that Shang-chi was trained to be the incredible martial artist that he is, it's pretty believable that the sister is able to do so as well by watching him and the others. There's a sequence showing their childhood and all of this. She also has several more years in that environment after Shang-Chi leaves too so she's had plenty of time.

Interesting thing about her fighting style is that it's not traditional at all. She incorporates a lot of grappling techniques since she has to learn on her own and it gives her a unique fighting style compared to the others in the film.

Katy/Awkwafina isn't supposed to fight in the last battle actually. They tell her she's not ready for it but she joins midway through since it's an emergency and she gets a lucky shot off basically. She got the basics down in several days time in the film but she's no Hawkeye or anything.

I'm not sure why the above two is too much for your suspension of disbelief though. We've gotten way crazier things in these films going on typically, even in the best Marvel films. This is kind of the tame stuff.

Seems like Shang-Chi is almost a side character in this story? :lollipop_confounded:

Horrible take.

I'm not surprised in this age where everything is clickbait so they can make a few extra bucks.

Doomcock, Midnight's Edge, Geeks and Gamers, and Kamran Pasha were all saying Shang Chi will bomb all weekend. Claiming that 8.8MM previews were horrible because BW came in at 13MM+. Pasha especially is trying to sell Chapek as this Machiavellian mastermind that will save Disney from wokeness. He is claiming that Chapek is fighting a big war, 4D chess against Hollywood and Feige is coming for him. According to him Chapek is having a 3 strikes and you're out with Feige (i.e. Black Widow bombed, Shang Chi bombs, and Eternal bombs and he fires Feige or cripples him). ME and Doomcock's audience are eating it up, but his shit is starting to get old to me.

I'm not reading any of these spoilers so I have no idea what has been said. But everyone should know that Ulysses 31 Ulysses 31 complains about tiny logic issues.
Just check his TLOU2 replies, he needs in depth explanations for every tiny thing.

I've not seen every MCU movie so I'm not sure which crazy stuff you're referring to, I know Black Widow has a lot of crazy stuff and an even crazier 3rd act which would take me out of the movie too.

Depends on how much the plot hinges on those convenient skills and lucky events for it to bother me.

Self trained just by watching and mimicking and still becoming that good is still a stretch to me unless it's established she has taskmaster like skills or that she secretly got some training.

They will be proven wrong on the Shang-Chi box office for this week at least. :p

I've heard some of the stuff you mentioned about Chapek which don't seem completely off base when coming from a hollywood writer/insider like Pasha.

ROFL Shareholders are going to be coming for Chapek. I know some are hoping a group can convince Iger to come back.

I mean stuff like some of the non-powered characters surviving hits from powered ones. Hawkeye's ability to hit stuff even at the speeds some enemies are going, like in the first Avengers film, is pushing it for a human character, for example. The stuff in this isn't as wild as that.

Only if he's losing them money.
Eisner wasn’t losing them money and Shareholders still revolted and ousted him for Iger. Actually it was the opposite. Eisner was so cheap the company was making money but the quality cratered. People are already as mad at Chapek was they were when they ousted Iger since he’s more of an Eisner than an Iger.
