Why I decided to limit my 144Hz monitor to 60Hz... Even when hardware is more than enough.

- 60fps is smooth enough

- that feeling of smoothness is even more enhanced when you watch low fps stuff like movies, and series, many YT videos, or just from time to time games which are 30fps

- anything above 60fps is noticeably smoother, but that extra smoothness also ruins standard framerate in games

- 60fps as ideal standard for most people makes you more connected to your fellow gamers

- most people in the world will rarely, if ever, experience more than 60fps

- more fps requires more power, which means more money

- it's just a game; Metal Gear Solid, many Final Fantasy titles, Silent Hills (plural, not Kojima's thing), Pokemon, etc. are some of the most beloved titles in history of gaming, and they ran at 30fps, or lower

- fast paced multiplayer games suck anyway

- in life you learn that it is often necessary to lower your standards for happiness

if you watch movies/TV shows, wouldn't 72hz be the more logical refresh? as that divides evenly into 24 fps?

120Hz is where is at since it evens with 24, 30 and 60.

with these you can adjust your refresh literally on a game by game basis by just locking to whatever you want your FPS to be
and which 144hz monitor doesn't have VRR?

I usually run either unlocked or lock to half refresh (72fps) in games.

No, for movies, or any 23.976fps stuff I change refresh rate to 47.952Hz (in some cases to 59.940Hz, it depends on the video).
you could just lock to 119.880 on your desktop and change the refresh in-game on a game by game basis. that way every video you play would divide perfectly into your refresh and your games can be whatever you like... I am confused lol

you don't have to run a game at 120hz just because your monitor is set to that under windows you know?

You know, GAF, there are days where I have a pretty low opinion of myself. I think I'm not smart enough, haven't accomplished enough, or I'm just not ambitious enough. Basically, myself, such that I am, am not simply not good enough. Then I read OPs like this, and it reminds me that in the grand scheme of things, I'm still relatively intelligent, relatively well adjusted, and haven't suffered serious head trauma. Sure, I'm not the best at anything, but I am actually still doing ok. And that makes me feel a lot better. Thanks OP.

Completely agree with OP; I'll only jump to 60+ FPS when it becomes the standard on consoles. The difference felt when coming back to 60 after enjoying 120 is very jarring.

  1. Stop making stupid threads
  2. Work harder
And then you will be able to afford to upgrade your PC every couple of years without it being a burden, that way you won't need to arbitrarily limit yourself or "lower your standards" as you put it.
Well, at the very least you understood what I was talking about.

Still, I don't want to spend more than 100 euro for gaming per decade; since I have more important things in life.

Is this for games and hardware together? Wait where do you live? It's hard to imagine being able to do much with a 100 euros but maybe with regional pricing and playing very few games.

but that still doesn't really make it a good idea to lock your refresh to 60hz... 120hz would be perfect for every video format and would feel smooth on the desktop, while almost any game out there has an option to lock the framerate to either predetermined settings like 30, 60, 120, 144fps or to half/quarter refresh meaning locking your Monitor to 60 doesn't really help at all and all it does is give you limited option while being in an options menu of a DX12 game or any game that does not support exclusive fullscreen

Unless you play competitive FPS with a mouse it honestly doesn't matter. I notice a difference playing MH rise on PC at 1440p 170fps vs 540p 30fps on switch, but that's an extreme example. 3rd person single player games I'm fine with 60.

I do notice I drive better in Forza at 170fps vs 60 on my TV though.
