I hope this is an option, and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be.

You can buy and download individual OGXB and 360 games on the Xbox store, so no reason why Sony shouldn't have the option to purchase legacy PS games. Fingers crossed.
Is it an option on the Switch? It’s not going to be on this.

Okay but how long will it take for them to reach 100 million GP subscribers, more-or-less concurrently? It has taken 5 years to reach 25 million, with very little competition from alternative services. At that pace it will take 20 years if level of competition from alternative services remains the same...but that won't be the case. Not only alternative services, but just alternative avenues for gaming in general (including rival consoles, games, storefronts etc.) will continue to increase.

That will probably slow down the rate Microsoft can reach 100 million GP subs, possibly greatly so. Are Microsoft really going to wait that long to break 100 million, or will they reach those gamers through other means, like utilizing the reach of their acquisitions to get gamers on mobile (King), PC (Blizzard, WoW), and other consoles (Activision, COD/Crash/Spyro/Tony Hawk/Guitar Hero etc.)?

The latter seems more likely for me, and that isn't really dependent on big GamePass growth let alone big Xbox console sales. But I guess we'll see.

It was up 7 million in one year, it's growing faster every year, not at the same rate. That's before we even think about Activision and all the stuff we know is coming in the future (Bethesda games, Fable etc). Elden Scrolls VI alone will be enough to bring a lot of people into the fold. 100m is just a sample figure anyway, nobody here knows what they have to reach to be happy and that equation will be unfathomably complicated with every factor at play. But that will naturally include things like (as an example, may not happen) rolling WoW subscriptions into Game Pass. They're all-in on it, they've made that very clear by now.

Point is whether it takes 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, it will be sustainable, and video games aren't going anywhere fast.

Sadly for you, that’s not how this will work. And the vast majority of users will sub to the second tier. It is what it is.
Based on what do you presume the that the vast majority of users (enough of a majority for you to say it will double gamepass' subs)will upgrade?

I certainly won't.

Sony had a chance to combine psnow and plus into one sub for the same price of plus alone and they didn't.

You’re not everyone. Sony will market the middle tier the most and people will jump on it. It offers the best value out of the three. It’s not rocket science.

Gotta see what those PSone/PS2/PSP actually are and how they work/presented
Announcements like this are so vague, there should of been a trailer showing you what you're actually signing up for.
What's available and what not
It can be a "not interested" or a "sign me up" depending how it's done.

NeoGaf is for gaming ENTHUSIASTS and not the average consumer. This forums lives in a totally different bubble from the rest of the world.

Yes, this is true. I think it will be worse for the casual gamers. They could care less about the older system games, and once they hear no day and date they will not subscribe. It's PSNOW with a shiny new coat, how was that doing?

I thought Jimbo was going to fuck over everyone and make everyone pay $120 for PS+ but all this does is merge the two services together.

I am glad there are no day one releases. I dont know how Microsoft justifies it but it is not sustainable to put games with 5 years dev time on a service for $10.

I do like how they are still supporting playstation 4 with all this cross gen but still managed to wittle down the free games again..

I'm paid up till 2025, hopefully PSVR2 is compatible with PC so I can jump ship after this gen.

The casuals will be happy to get downloadable ps4 games and some of the new ps5 games with that sub. They’re perfectly happy with the ps plus collection as it is, this is just icing on the cake. Most users will subscribe to the middle tier. It’s just what will happen.

Past monthly PS+ games and games included in the PS+ Collection for PS5 are 'bought' through your subscription, so as long as you are subscribed to it, you can access them.

Everything will carry over
I don’t mean those, I mean these…100% these dont disappear?

I assume the 340 are the PSone/PS2/PS3/PSP?
100 each main platform and 40 for PSP?

Well if Swift Star says it, it must be so.
Again, since this is still basically ps plus and psnow together, why isn't there 25 million psnow subs already if what you say is true?

Hot take: Sony now makes almost $1B/quarter of revenue with their game subscription and will increase a lot with Spartacus.

Assuming PS+ will have 50M subs at Spartacus release (will be more since they are in a growing trend), if they pay now $59.99/year (assuming 100% of PS+ pay the yearly fee, which isn't the case as Jimbo said today) and 25% of them upgrade to $99.99/year PS+ Extra tier, that would mean a revenue increase of $500M/year.

That would be with only 25% converting, with none converting to Premium and only paying the best deal (yearly sub). And considering that the new offering wouldn't attract new subbers. Pretty likely they will have made almost $4B this FY from game subs, and Spartacus may generate them an additional yearly $1B.

PS2 games available on PS Now are also in the store. PS1 and PSP are going to be playable locally too, so very likely will be available in the store as they were in PSP, Vita and PS3.

And I bet they will be crossbuy with them as they were in these 3 platforms: if you bought them digitally on PSP, Vita or PS3 you would be able to download them for free without paying the subscripttion.
I do hope this ends up being true.

The more I think about this, the more I am ok with it. My gaming spending will go down with this, especially in the playstation echo system.

Optimal Gaming Solution:
  • Multiplayer and Digital Purchases = PC
    • no online tax, no worries about backwards compatibility in the future
  • Physical Purchases = Nintendo
    • Nintendo games hold value and are multi-generational
  • Gamepass Sub - month to month
    • Need to maintain sub to make Xbox S not a brick, sub also works on PC
    • Since no yearly discount, cancel as necessary if playing something else
  • PS+ Sub - 1 month per year
    • Playstation only has single player exclusive games, so only need 1 month sub per year to catch up on the ones that are not on the other platforms

It seems like it is what is already in PSNow with a few PS5 and PS4 games. The numbers add up to that.
More games will be coming to the service according to the blog post. It seems they’ll heavily invest in this service, just not with their own first party games.
But I suspect select first party games, live service ones specially, will be released on it.

People don’t know ps now exists and it’s not available everywhere. Sony didn’t invest on it neither marketed it.
It is not that hard to understand why things are the way they are.

So it’s not backwards compatible with the digital PS1 and PS2 games I bought years ago. It’s selective titles for the new service? It’s very confusing. Even if I get the highest tier. My old library is still stuck on a legacy device?

It can be a "not interested" or a "sign me up" depending how it's done.

They're going to drip-feed information over the next 2 months. Classic Sony approach that we see again and again.

And you dont speak for everyone.

If I won't because I dont see the value, you can bet your ass a lot of others won't either.

You stupidly said they instantly doubled gamepass subs when at no point did that happen and now are having to justify your haphazard comment on a remote pie in the sky possbility that isn't happening.

You clearly didn't understand what was being presented and now you're stuck looking like a fool.

My prediction, maybe 15% of ps plus current users upgrade to middle tier at most.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
So basically:

- PSPlus
- PSPlus + (PSNow - Streaming)
- PSPlus + PSNow + retro + demos?

And maybe some better games to download than current PSNow?

Kind of wonder what upgrades the old games will have. I highly doubt they are adding trophies to them, but I do want to know what kind of other features there are. I've been on a CRT kick lately and would need something pretty significant to want to play them on my PS5 and LCD as opposed to the actual hardware on a CRT.

I don't even know what they could possibly add though so likely I won't be using it much.

That middle tier sounds great for me, I usually play games after release when they are discounted - if I play them at all. 5 top tier bangers named and I've played none of them and there are 400 more? I'm not sure why people are so upset , Sony aren't going to move away from what made them the market leader. MS had do something new because they clearly had no chance competing with Sony on quality first party games. Why do you think they bought two massive publishers, they were desperate.

Probably but currently we don't actually know jack shit so I wouldn't jump to any conclusions negative or positive at the moment.
Also the question of how those games on the service will work, will they be on a cycle like Gamepass or will they just add to them?
And if they're on a cycle do the ones you download disappear after time?

Doesn't seem too bad. It all comes down to which ps1 and ps2 games we are getting for me to sub to the higher tier. Odd they didn't say some ps1 and ps2 games that are coming to the service

I assume users with PS+ and PSNow were expecting Sony to sweeten the pot. You used to be able to get that combo for $120 a year, now you can get that combo for $120 a year. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
They added PS1 games and PS5 game trials for the $120/year.

Or ditch the old games and streaming, pay $100/year and still get hundreds of PS4/5 games.

Its nothing that great but its objectively a better deal than before.

Exactly. People on here think companies just get to dictate their margins and market share.

That's not how it works.

If you're up against a determined competitor with like 10x the financial resources, you're gonna get squeezed, one way or another. Sony are in a precarious position right now and need to plan their next few moves really wisely if they're going to remain the market leader.
Jesus, what a load of nonsense. Sony are market leader because of the quality of their games- that isn't changing. The gamepass ball hugging is hilarious.

Very happy to hear there is no base PS+ price increase. I'm also kind of happy they are not doing day 1 games yet. I might change my mind on the day 1 stuff down the road, but so far no one has convinced me that it is a viable pathway for getting the games I enjoy for a cheaper price than I already pay.

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

It's true that PS+ isn't increasing in price, but the value is objectively worse now that they'll only be doing two games per month. Instead of the current three. Used to be like 8.

Not an issue for me. I spend more time bitching about the quality of the "free games" than I do playing them anyway. Except for Maneater. That shark game sucked me in for some reason.

You think they will stop offering PS+ games for PS4?

They did that for the PS4 when it launched. Plus was giving Vita, PS3 and PS4 games from 2013-12 to 2019-02. Now they are doing it a lot earlier than before.
Interested in the mid tier... will depend of the list and how often they will add games that i would be interested to play.

A second tier? How does a second tier work with combing them into one sub?
....By creating a second tier that has more than PS+ and PS Now as it exists?

I dont know what you didn't understand.

They could have taken this third tier and made it the second tier and only other tier while combing PS+ and PS Now as the base tier.

As the tiers are now, its garbage.
