VRR support rolling out this week for PS5

LG C1, Elden Ring is very smooth now with VRR enabled. Can confirm though that PS4 games do not support VRR. The TV switches to VRR automatically when you start a PS5 game, but this doesn't happen with PS4 games even with "apply to unsupported games" enabled. Why cant they just enable it with an on/off toggle systemwide like series X? Doesn't make sense.

check the HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color setting, it needs to be ON, as well as Instant Game Response.
That did the trick. Thanks.

The VRR counter seems to stay around 118 in MM fidelity mode. Not sure what’s going on there.

right, and thats a pain in the butt to figure out which games are made for it and which are not. From what I hear, Returnal and Demons soul sound phenomenal, but i dont have nor care about those games. For the rest of the games not optimized for it, it all sounds muffled, or just standard, nothing special (with 3d audio on). Turning it off, brings back a normal sounding audio

So if I am not playing those 1-2 games, then I might as well just have it off right? If I ever end up buying a game known for the amazing 3d audio, then i guess ill turn it on for that game

The thing I dont get is, on xbox, i have Dolby atmos on for everything, and it all sounds phenomenal.
Nah you just need native ps5 games. Like deathloop, Tokyo ghost, cod etc. Pretty much any native ps5 games. If you play any ps4 games will just sound like ps4 games. If the sound is recording in one way it won't magically turn in 3d.

dont like any of those, and I do play cod, Cold war, which also sounds better with 3D audio off.

Horizon is a native ps5 game, and it doesnt feel like it gains anything with it on.

LG CX saying VRR not supported. Why?

Instant Game Response might be off in the settings...go to Picture - Additional Settings - Instant Game Response and turn it on for that HDMI (just turn all of them on no reason to have it off)

because it supports freesync...this is HDMI VRR its a 2.1 feature.
Again VRR is an option of HDMI 2.1 and not guaranteed

  1. HDMI 2.0 no longer exists, and devices should not claim compliance to v2.0 as it is not referenced any more
  2. The features of HDMI 2.0 are now a sub-set of 2.1
  3. All the new capabilities and features associated with HDMI 2.1 are optional (this includes FRL, the higher bandwidths, VRR, ALLM and everything else)
  4. If a device claims compliance to 2.1 then they need to also state which features the device supports so there is “no confusion” (hmmmm)

Maybe depends on the game but its amazing in returnal and deamons souls... at least with pulse 3d
yes, every time I make that statement, its the same answer I ALWAYS get, maybe i will know once PS+ essentials releases, so that way its going to be part of the subscription, with returnal included

But outside of those 2 games, for the other 99.99% of games, its just meh? PS4 games, specifically shooters get nothing, or makes it worse since a lot of shooters have their own build in 3d audio already, and other ps5 games with 3d audio just sound okay, so in almost all instance, its better off.

EDIT: i also have pulse 3d, got no problems with it, just the 3d audio on feature doing nothing for me

Is this a PS+ subscriber exclusive? Not getting the update….
Edit: Nevermind. Seeing it now. Wasn’t appearing previously.

It is system wide for PS5 games with "enable for not supported" option. But Sony is being Sony with PS4 BC... or maybe they tested it and it broke things?
What PS4 games with unlocked framerates the PS5 can't do 60fps? I did a quick search and could not find one.

Weird that they need to patch the games for VRR instead of it being system-wide like on PC.

That's because games performance are locked by the devs.

The same reason pc players can play whatever resolution they want while console users needs to buy a remaster.

Miles Morales running unlocked framerate in VRR is something to behold,

Yeah fair point actually, I cant think of any PS4 60fps enabled games that really need VRR. But still I dont get why Sony dont just make it a universal on/off toggle for the console itself regardless of the content.

If there are no games that would benefit from it, why risk it breaking stuff? Software can have unpredicted behavior even with minor changes that "should not" affect anything else.
I can understand why they didn't want to try their luck :p plus, less testing resources needed.

Yes, on those 2 games, using 3d audio is clearly the best option. Returnal won best sound at Bafta 2022 by the way.

It's also true a lot of other games have better sound without it but it's not about Tempest vs Dolby Atmos, both do 3d sound fine, it's just about the implementation and sound mixing on each game.

Nah VRR is clutch. Everyone complaining about stuttering on Elden ring which I didn’t notice cause of VRR.
I'm still playing it with FreeSync on my PC, I can tell that some specific areas have lower fps but I can barely notice.

But VRR got nothing on Dolby Vision, everybody knows that.

Anyone know how to monitor this on LG C9? I don’t think the HDMI menu shows it or the info menu

most TVs show it in the signal info. my Samsung shows refresh rate by pressing the OK/Enter button and bringing up the channel/source info screen

I don't think there is a way to check it. I tried that hidden menu and it does not show any info like the latest models.
There is a trick if you just want to doubel check if it is enabled, which is going to that Fine Tune Dark Areas option and lower it. If the screen gets darker, then it is enabled.

I am at the beginning of the game. Quality mode is better than before, but since fps goes below 48 in that mode, it gets very weird. Perf mode seems way better now, but I haven't played the game yet. I have to finish Horizon first...

There is no way to monitor the exact FPS/Hz on the LG C9.

However it is possible to take a look into the "HDMI Diagnostic Menu" of the C9. If the value next to "Total Res.:" changes, VRR is active. If not, VRR is not active or the FPS are stable af.

I did not know that the Total Res thing was an indication that VRR was enabled. Thanks!

Is this update out in the U.S? Im not seeing it. I even tried manually updating the system firmware and it said im up to date.

EDIT: Had to restart the system. And then wait a few seconds for the update to apply. The downloads notification box showed an update was installed but i never saw it download. Weird. The vrr option didnt show up right away either.

I have a freesync 165hz monitor will this work with ps5? Actually I think freesync is only over display port. Vrr is very nice on pc though. Anything in the 50s seems smooth. Rocket league @165hz vrr is the shniz. I went from diamond 1 to champ 2 in a month lol

how low can your TV go?
this can actually be an issue on PS5 noone seemed to think about yet.

on Xbox you can force 120hz ON EVERY GAME, meaning low framerate compensation can be used for 60fps games.

not so on PS5, where 120hz can only be enabled if the game actively supports 120hz output.

so if Elden Ring drops below the VRR window of your TV you are out of luck on PS5.
most older TVs go down to 48hz, newer models reach all the way down to 40hz, HDMI 2.1 VRR supports as low as 20hz I think, but basically no TV actually reaches that low to my knowledge. and the SX can go down to 30hz I think... but again, that's not really supported on any TV yet

on Xbox, I set the system to 120hz for Elden Ring, this measn the console doubles every frame, practically widening my VRR window all the way down to 24fps, since 24fps in-game will get doubled up to 48fps/hz by the Xbox, meaning my lowest 48hz VRR limit still catches these refreshes.

on PS5, you need to stay above 40fps or 48fps depending on TV for games like Elden Ring that only output 60hz

Or you can crawl back from under the technological Rock you’ve been hiding under from. Come enjoy VRR and all the HDMI 2.1 features, providing you have a capable display.

I'm sorry, but if you're a gamer, this isn't boring at all. Might as well call SSD speeds, Zen 2/RDNA 2 and this whole generation boring as well. VRR is part of next gen.
And if I’m a walrus?
