New PS5 model lighter, uses less W, and possibly more efficient in cooling

All this at no extra cost...

... oh wait, no, that's not right. The PS5 now costs £30.00 more here in the UK and is more expensive in many other territories as well bar the U.S.

The keyword by Sony seems to have been to fix the supply problem and more than reducing the cost of the console (sure, it looks like it is using a lighter and cheaper cooling solution thanks to the improved thermals and other changes). Sony wanted to massively increase supply and do it quickly too: suppliers love those words together ;).

While the cooling solution may be cheaper, there is R&D costs involved to do the redesign period but while the components they may be sourcing now might be easier to procure but a bit more pricey too (manufacturing cost of the APU on a new node might be even more expensive than before for example).

at this point why not wait for a PS5 Slim?

I mean is there a must have game that's coming out soon you really need to play? If you've waited this long then you obviously are in no rush to get one. The only upcoming game that people seem to be interested in is God of War. Hold off another year if you can and we'll likely see a slim PS5.

Are you saying the PS4 is quieter than an Xbox Series X? because it is NOT lol.

While I wouldn't say my PS4 was loud it I did hear the fans far more than the fan in the Series X. I literally had to put my ear right beside the vent on the Series X to hear it. That thing is super quiet.
Right, my Series X is so quiet, very happy with the Console, really nothing to say about, apart from very good things :D
PS5 ? I coudn't find one before, so I decided to wait a bit, simply because I was very busy with XSX. I really want to play GOW and TLOU Part I, the two games I really want bad; and actually, I'm more interested in a PRO Model VS The Slim, and we don't know when they are coming out, and if a PRO model is even coming out... too many if. On the other hand, the base PS5 revision(1200) should come out very soon I believe, and honestly, I will not be able to resist :)

i suppose there's nothing wrong with going with the 1200 revision. seems like major changes internally. i just couldn't stand to look at such a huge ugly console lol.

This is not the reason of why they didn't rise the price in USA: one of the main reason is the rise of the dollar and inflation in a good part 'thanks' to the war in Ukraine and Europe deciding to stop buying gas and oil to Rusia and to buy it to USA instead. A particularly strong dollar hurts the currency exchange for the other countries, not to USA.

They have like about twice the market share in active consoles and game subs than MS, aren't worried about them.

The other main reason that affects the whole world is the sudden rise of shipments (due to rise of fuel cost) and rise of components independently than if they -as always do every generation- periodically they review the internal design recuding costs.

All these things combined caused a costs rise way higher than the 10% they rised in the pricing. The thing is that the disc console was already being sold at a loss and the discless SKU was barely sold at a profit, so now both must be sellling at an important loss and this price is to reduce that loss.
I mean. I get the economics of this
But fact is that Microsoft and Nintendo did not raise prices while facing same conditions. Especially Microsoft since their console is packed with similar technology as PS5. And also fact that revision of PS5 decreased manufacturing price of PS5 (logically) while Sony raise prices.
It's just not a good look no matter the "excuse."

It's big, yep; and I will need a new piece of furniture to accommodate both her and XSX LOL !!!

There is nothing to fix.
My 3080 got way worse coil whine. It’s normal electrical noise which is hardly audible. Ps5 is really quiet
My PS5 is a really bad hum that drives me insane in quieter sections of games like TLOU2, It's been there since day one. Bigger bombastic games with constant soundtrack playing in the background like Miles dont have this issue since the coil whine is masked by the audio. But there is no way im imagining this. Ive had coil whine before. Ive had case, GPU and AIO fans go insane during certain RPMs, and this sounds very noisy as well.

So how did they manage to reduce the max power draw by 20-30w? Pretty substantial power saving considering I assume the APU itself hasn't been touched.
If they reduced the max power draw then they MUST have touched the APU. Like someone else said, N6 is a possibility and that could also explain why the console went up in price. Sony likely had to negotiate a new contract for these newer chips and its possible that they didnt get the same deal they got back in 2019 or 2020 or whenever they signed the deal for the N7 chips. Also, reducing size by going for smaller nodes no longer results in cost savings according to MS.

Sony aims to ship and sell 20 million units and they likely just said fuck it and decided to pass the costs on to the consumer instead of taking the hit themselves like they used to.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
"A big thanks for our early adopters for beta testing our products.

Without your dedication we wouldn't be able to sell our console to the same people again, and charge more money for it as well."

I mean, its cool they make a more efficient and it uses less W, but it's pretty early in the generation.

Also, the current model has got a 50 usd increase price. I wonder what this will be increased by when the old one is discontinued and no longer in store.

Hah - having experienced it first hand when purchasing 2 different units - it's quite alarming the difference in level of sound .. there was certainly *something* to fix with Rev1 launch versions..

I'm lucky that mine has very little (audible) coil whine - the second unit I purchased for my nephew was significantly louder by comparison. Both were initial launch versions - so can't speak to these latest revisions.

Neither of the PS5s purchased were as quiet as my launch XSX.

I'll wait for the thread in a month or so that says....

"New PS5 model has LOUDER coil whine than the launch units, WTF Sony!!!!!!1111"

Maybe it's just me, but the plate that's covering the board have these bumps that look like the GDDR6 memory is now on the same side as the chip.

It definitely looks like that's the case.
The memory chip are probably were the white rectangles are around the chip. Interesting.

No. Person I quoted said the PS5 is the loudest console they have had. I’m saying homie never owned a PS4 cause mine was loud AF

I hope they fixed the buzzing coming from the power supply. It's the only audible noise coming from the console. I've tested 4 different PS5s and each one had varying levels of the buzzing sound. The actual fan is really quiet. The noise comes from the power supply area.

Why in the whole wide world would they lower the price when the demand outweighs the demand massively? It's a company, not a charity.

Also, we have no idea what the R&D cost or hur much cheaper the new design is to manufacture.

Unlike Sony or MS, Nintendo was selling Switch with a big profit since launch, so maybe all this only did reduce this profit or gave them a small loss per unit, something that being a super profitable company with a ton of cash doesn't worry them.

MS doesn't care about the profitability of their gaming division and it's a company from US with their sales focused in US. So the dollar benefits them, shipments don't hurt them that bad and sell way less consoles than the other ones so their get impacted way less than the other ones. In fact the strong dollar benefits them.

We saw this price rise in Quest 2, PC GPUs, smartphones and other electronic stuff, it isn't a Sony thing. Inflation and fuel pricing will keep growing, and I assume this will continue rising the cost of components like chips so we'll see price rises in more devices.

God damn! Price cut incoming boys!! Woop woop!

Theres no PCB on the M.2 drive area now.

Not gonna lie it looks awesome, so much more compact. hardly any heat sink. I cant work out how sony have put the price up to be honest.

I would want this, great for new buyers.

Did we saw rise of prices of GPU? Because from what I can tell, prices of GPU were up because of high demand thanks to cryptobros and prices have now plummeted.

Even AMD did not up prices of new gen CPUs

The power connector is on a different place, too.
There is so much changed. Maybe a more efficient power supply. That would also reduce power draw. But more efficent power supply = increased costs, so I doubt it.

Wow, there is big change from 1000 to 1200. I know they want to make as much profits as possible but hopefully newer version are all better. Never saw the internals of PS3 and PS3 super slim but there was big difference in size. I am looking forward to PS5 slim lol.

A ps4 which has been serviced correctly, is as quiet as a Series X. The only PS system that is never quiet under load, is a PS4 Slim.
Anyone saying they have one which is silent all the time, either has to turn it on, or hasnt played demanding games.

Just watched the video (had been avoiding as dislike the guys video)

But they didn't remove the heatsink from the board, due to improved cooling and power consumption I was wondering if it could be the possible 6nm chip reported on in May rather than the standard 7nm in prior versions.

Guess we will need to wait longer to find out.

At the end I think he says more to come.
Guess he'll do a video on the heat sink removal.

Coil wine is the only slight noise my PS5 makes. Luckily mine is far from bad and I aint complaining. looks like these newer revisions with less power draw will be even better...

I hope.

Really cant understand how Sony have put the price up with these cuts. I am convinced the PS5 has never really been profitable for them. I know they said it would start making a profit but I just don't believe it.

This looks like half the size and weight now internally and with less PCB. It's got to be helping a lot.

Let me get this straight, they didn't do a great Job on the original because a company that always finds ways to optimize and reduce cost, optimized their console? Yea that makes sense.

If the original design was really good there would be little to no optimizations left to do.

BUT.. I said I think this is not the case because moving to N6 die node would explain how they could make such drastic changes. Like every drastically changed model last gen...

Also considering the size and power reductions its a shame they didn't make this smaller.

Isn't it mainly due to exchange rate differences between other regions and the USD?

I'm wondering if they are actually making quite a bit on these now (or more than they were) when adjusted fro exchange rates, but they want to make some serious moves next year. A slim version released alongside a price cut (albeit from a higher price in some regions), that with PSVR2 available by next Christmas and hopefully a great year of software would put them in a good place.

Just stop with this nonsense. The coil whine issue has been widely reported on and documented.

Ok.

1/10.

No PS5 to be found anywhere here and not going to play the last gen version.

Don't know why I waste my time with serial bullshitters in these threads.

It's a documented issue for a minority of units. However coincidently all of these units seem to have ended up in the hands of disingenuous people who find it convenient to bring other consoles in to discussions where it's not relevant.

TSMC N6 could be a possibility. It's fully design-compatible with N7 chip designs so you can just throw your old SoC design on there and get some of the benefits.

It's possible that there's a new chip based on N6 considering it's supposedly going to replace almost all N7 designs.

However this doesn't explain the smaller heatsink because N6 should have the same power efficiency as N7/N7P.
It's more likely that the original heatsink and PSU were overengineered, and Sony is now more confident in using a design that matches the SoC's TDP.

There are numerous other components that could be joined in a single chip as well. Saves space and possibly reduces the size of the cooling solution as well. These 'small' revisions are mostly down to the satellite components, I believe.

Cooling solutions can perform very different, even if smaller, I guess, but 20-30W less consumption without a die shrink. How? Did they manage to lower the voltage and since it was running rather high for consoles, the impact is sort of huge?

So how did they manage to reduce the max power draw by 20-30w? Pretty substantial power saving considering I assume the APU itself hasn't been touched.

Better quality APU dies from a more mature manufacturing process. By now they can probably tighten their constraints on binned parts from the N7P node and not see a meaningful impact on yields.

I think it's really great is constantly trying to make the PS5 more efficient, but that's lame that they increased the price at the same time since they obviously reducing cost.
I'm suprised that Microsoft doesn't do the same, the console has no heavy revision so far.

Don't reply childish console wars arguments about why Microsoft doesn't do it. Go back to the sandbox.

No, the reduction is in the heatsink. Which must mean the SoC is producing less heat or they overshot the heatsink requirements, but seeing how this is the 2nd heatsink reduction and its using less power I think its an improvement to the SoC
