Starfield Showcase Rumored to Be Announced Next Week

Does this showcase bring the hype the skyrim one did....

..I hope so. Would be amazing to have that kind of hype again but we will never witness it without the crowd cheers.

Besides launch bugs I’m trying to think where they can fail with this one.

Planets:
Randomizing 1000 planets. It’s not easy to get that right. On earth there is water, desert, snow, ice, jungle, forests, grassy plain, beaches etc. Biomes. So far space games usually just make ice planets, jungle planets, desert planets, water planets etc. No biomes. I hope Bethesda can get out of that trap.
Risk of failing: High!

Landing:
I think the can’t-land-manually concern is overblown since I’ve played 500+ hours of NMS and the first thing you want to craft is a teleporter. Fun the first time, boring the next thousand times. Star Citizen is a snoozefest when launching and landing.
Risk of failing: Low.

Combat:
What weapons do you have besides guns? I can’t say I’m overly excited about the combat if it’s just COD with astronauts. Is there some kind of magic or cyber weapons? Big question mark there.
Risk of failing: Mid.

No Man’s Sky:
Is it too similar? Nah, as a fan of NMS it gets me excited to see a AAA take on some of the things you can do in that game. Hopefully it goes both ways so Hello Games takes inspiration from Bethesda as well. I wouldn’t mind building my own ship in NMS!
Risk of failing: Low.

Exploration:
How do you make rewarding exploration with randomized maps? Is it even possible? I know they’ve dabbled with that before but I’m slightly worried for this one tbh, will probably be great on the civilized planets with main quests though.
Risk of failing: Mid.

I'm just happy that Todd is still there and doing actual work, being the creative director and all. The man is 51 years old, it'll be a sad day when he decides to move on.
He seems healthy, doesn’t look like he’s anywhere near 51, should have a couple more big games in him after Starfield. Wikipedia at least says he’s directing The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5.

Starfield is nowhere near Skyrims' level of hype and anticipation.

At comparable coverage pre-launch, people had already blown their loads to Skyrim and were talking about it constantly, even I as someone then who wasn't a fan of TES games at the time had Skyrim preordered like 6+ months prior to release.

Meanwhile the general opinion of Starfield is "Okay great, guess I'll check it out on release since it's on Gamepass" and that's being generous.

I’m not sure this is a concern, since the core game is centered around hand-crafted planets with the procedurally generated planets as extra depth.

Major difference between a game in a long established franchise with a huge fanbase and a new IP. Hype will come with a successful showcase.

This seems like fantasy, since the general reaction on PC has been to place it on Steam wishlists.

Are you mining your ‘general opinion’ from GAF?

There is no difference here.

IP comparing is pointless. BGS and Todd Howard have a developer based fanbase. It's like Hideo Kojima fans who play all of his stuff, or people who follow Paradox Interactive religiously - they don't care about the IP, they play games from the developer because they like their formula. TES & Fallout aren't dissimilar at it's core. Just like Starfield. You've roped those fans in, and then some because of Gamepass, but there's not a lot of hype outside of those bubbles. Nothing comparable to Skyrim that's for sure.

My "opinion" is from having a vivid memory of Skyrims' initial marketing and comparing it to Starfield, who even with more advantages today still trails in comparison.

I expect more giddiness after the showcase since it'll finally have a concrete release date but nothing that will direct a lot of eyes like Skyrim was able to.

I’d say it’s a valid concern. I can’t see them hand-crafting whole planets, it’ll likely be the same procedural generation process but they’ll hand-craft cities and settlements where the main quests will take place. If it’s just about finding resources on the extra planets they need to make them varied. And I hope they find alway to make all planets have biomes. Exploring new planets should be exciting!

Good point, though it’s very likely they’ll use the handcrafted cities/settlements for biome diversity.

The also did say they’d review every planet after the procedural generation to confirm everything looks good and consistent, so one hopes they won’t just be barren ice cubes.

Fingers crossed the showcase answers our questions. I used to be a massive space nut back in the day…so I hope they land this.

Calling fans of Bethesda RPG a ‘bubble’ doesn’t do Justice to the size of the bubble.

Again, there’s a reason why it’s too wish-listed on Steam, even with no release date. No idea why you keep citing Gamepass when their RPGs did very well on console too.

My "opinion" is from having a vivid memory of Skyrims' initial marketing and comparing it to Starfield, who even with more advantages today still trails in comparison.

So you’ve pivoted from calling it a general opinion to now saying it’s your personal opinion?

I mean, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist (pun intended) to know that there will be a showcase for Starfield soon.
My greatest hope is that the shooting sections look a little less janky in the next showcase - it would really elevate my own excitement for the game; everything else looked pretty decent to me.

Where did I say there was no hype? You're the one wanting it to compare to Skyrim and I'm telling you how it is so far. They're on completely different levels.

Skyrim got its hype from Todd's insane press conference where he went through the systems, how you level up etc.

This showcase will be Bethesda doing that so saying there is little hype is both false and disingenuous. It's the highest wishlists game on steam and one of the most talked about games in media. Maybe you don't have hype for it for some reason, bur millions of others do.

Let's see where the hype is after this event.

Yeah we’ll see soon. I’m still a massive space nut so for me these concerns are basically what could push it from a 9 to a 10. But I’m more into Star Wars (the old ones!) than Star Trek so I hope there is some magic or something so it’s not just science.

My top 5 wishes are, no specific order:

* Lots of different alien creatures, not just variations of 10 creatures spread out on 1000 planets.
* Rewarding exploration, preferably some exploration on the ”empty” planets too.
* Magic or cyber weapons, not just bullets.
* Alien civilizations and races.
* On-ship tasks and a crew to interact with.

+ A thriving mod community!

Exploring empty planets

Here we go!
It will probably be more like exploring the caves beneath empty planets.....they already tweeted some time ago about what will you discover in Starfields caves.....that means there will be lots of them.Skyrims dungeons all over again I imagine.

Let's see what the marketing cycle looks like though. That skyrim ad did wonders for bringing people in. I would think that the marketing hits coinciding with the direct.

Some leaked scripts of the event:

"Thanks for your patience in waiting for Starfield. Today you will see, never seen before exclusive footage of Starfield"

"The team at Bethesda are working hard to make sure Starfield is the best it can be and we can't wait to share more"

"Where ever you play Starfield, be it on Xbox Gamepass, Series or One families or even on PC, there has never been a better time to be an Xbox and Gamepass gamer".

"And starfield is just the beginning. We can't wait to show you what we have lined up for the rest of the year in our summer event"

I think Starfield is speaking to people outside of the existing core Bethesda audience, for the same reasons Mass Effect managed to reach beyond the usual BioWare set. It's probably the most hyped game release this year.

That said, you need more than hype to be a success, you need follow through, you need longevity. A lot is riding on whether or not this game is an 82 or a 92.

This is honestly the first BGS game since Morrowind* I'm actually somewhat excited about.

*And I didn't even like Morrowind that much, anyway.

Exciting!

Wish it would drop last year, when I had nothing to play. Still, exciting enough, I hope there will be many weird creatures, intriguing lore and stuff like that.

Not sure if STARFIELD will eclipse previous HOWARD games but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. FO4, coasting off the success of SKYRIM for sure, absolutely obliterated the previous' engagement count (on STEAM at least). I feel like once we get a REAL dive into the game and what a close to complete version looks like things will really start heating up, but already the game is tracking high. Also, launch dates help as most people don't really get hooked into the hype until they know there's an end to it (i.e. the release date).

Besides launch bugs I’m trying to think where they can fail with this one.

Not every planet has a "season" or "biomes" like Earth. These goldilock planets are going to be rare in the game as they should be. Most others should be just like the other "dead" planets in our system that can't support life naturally.

. . .honestly, I've accepted that, other than the bespoke planets that are narratively required, most of the other planets are just going to be spaces for whatever version of Radiant Quests are going to be in STARFIELD. Honestly, that is what I'm hoping they nail, having a system in place that gives reasons to explore the nooks and crannies of their universe through the "Misc." quests.

This is the most excited I've been about gaming in a long time. A sequel to BotW, new Forza and hot on its heels is a game I've wanted as far back as I can remember. A space-based RPG where I can go anywhere I choose anytime I choose to do so. I bet I spend more time in the ship builder than I have in most games. Add the colony building stuff which I spent an ungodly number of hours farting around with in Fallout 4. Then add mods, which I will easily pour thousands of hours into just like Fallout 4. Content/dollar Bethesda RPGs are unmatched. I played Fallout 3 through several playthroughs for almost 500 hours, the same happened for Fallout NV, then again in Skyrim, then in Fallout 4 thanks to mods I had to force myself to stop playing and move on. All cost under $100.

No, that is literally not even close to the opinion of the most wishlisted game on Steam. The idea that nobody cares about this is some Sony Pony weirdo shit.

Skyrim had hype leading up to it's release date? Yes, it did, once it had a release. This doesn't. It is also one of the best known rpg series in the world.

I appreciate that

I just hear if it gets pushed for this fabled June release its coming in a mess much like a Cyberpunk repeat

Will it shocked me MS releases it and lets us all beta test it and work out the bugs?

Nope
