I keep seeing videos and articles about how disappointing this game is. What's wrong with it?
Play it and find out for yourself, personally I'm absolutely loving it. It's a Bethesda game through and through.
I honestly don't understand the hate it gets. Especially the traveling from planet to planet, do people really want to have to go through the whole taking off and, traveling and landing sequence's every single time?

I would say that it’s a combination of hype with description leaving room for speculation, unrealistic expectations, being focused on story-telling and not enjoying creative mechanics, little to no experience in other multi-planet space games to know that some mechanics would make an already slow game unbearable, no mod tools available, not actually having access to the game and just parroting Youtube rants, plus enjoying to trigger people more than playing games.

Personally I see any score lower than 7/10 as a scream for attention. Can’t take any of that seriously. It’s a divisive game but it’s not bad. I’d rate it 9/10.

As for the planet to planet travel. I think the fast travel is too easily accessed, there is no reason to actually walk inside the ship right now. You can fast travel from inside a cave on one planet to a city on another planet, 3 second fade to black load, not touching your spaceship.

I'll admit that I do agree with your fast travel comment, it does make some of the game structure redundant.
I would have loved for them to make the ship feel more like a character in the game.

I agree with your assessment of the negativity this game gets, it's totally unwarranted just like a lot of Xbox games at the moment.

I use fast travel if I've sprinted towards a destination for fifteen minutes, to get back to the ship.

I just recently decided to get the hang of ship building - fucking game got me again! Now I'm hooked, or rehooked. Ship building is super fun to master. This game, man...

They said the beta patch was planned to go live at the end of the month, could be next week or the next one.

They updated the beta yesterday but without telling what it changed compared to the previous beta update (updates at the end) :

2GB update just went out on Steam. I see DLSS in this and will try it out later. No patch notes yet...launched the game and was able to flip to DLSS and change FOV

My biggest problem is that it seems like exploration is fairly limited. In other Bethesda games I can be given a main quest, like for example in Skyrim you get told to go to Whiterun after leaving Helgen, but along the way find interesting places like Riverwood, the Embershard Mine, Bleak Falls Barrow, etc., and get sidetracked for hours. In Starfield if you're given a quest, you go to the planet on your map, land, and you're already there where the objective is. And if you do decide to wander around the planet for a bit you're probably just going to encounter some of the same POIs you've already seen before. Now, I've spent most of my time doing side quests and faction quests, so I've only just finished "Into the Unknown" so maybe I'm wrong on all of this and there's more to come.

To me it just seems like the game would be better if there were like 6-8 fully fleshed out, handcrafted planets with different biomes to explore and then the thousand or so "empty" planets that you can use for things like outpost building, resource generation, radiant quests, etc. I still like the game though.

I’ve stopped playing now, got 45 hours, still to compete the main quest line.

But I’m waiting for a few more updates to make it more stable.

Only have the main quest to finish....I always do this with Bethesda games....do loads of side content then can't bring myself to finish it until dlc comes out.
 
Two biggest patch notes for me:

Added the ability to eat food placed in the world

Adjusted stealth to make it more forgiving
Stealth is off for sure. I couldn't hardly sneak anywhere in the beginning.

However, now I'm a complete ghost. I clear whole facilities over and over and never get seen. Maxing stealth skills definitely work, but there's still sometimes a few odd long distance discoveries.

I think I am nearing the close of the Crimson Fleet quest. Been a spectacular quest so far.
Of all the faction missions the Crimson Fleet one is probably the best one. But in the end I got so annoyed by the pricks on that fucking space station that I just wanted to go John Wick on everyone.

Will jump back in after this latest patch I think, just waiting for it to land on game pass pc seem to be the last place that gets it and no beta access

Ha, this thread is about to reach 100 pages. Congrats to all of you, crazy space explorers. Not bad for what is considered to be a mid game.

I've been away from the game for the last month or so but I will definitely come back sometime in December when I'm done with my work projects so I can explore some more to try and get some missing achievements. And, yes, ability to eat the food outside of the inventory is a big win, imo.

The fact that this thread is mostly positive is heartwarming too. We all acknowledge that the game has flaws and some of them will probably will never be fixed or corrected or are a part of design, but, man, what an achievement and I am not going to lie, it does hurt a bit when this game is being dragged through mud whenever possible. But that is fine, tons of my favourite things in games, films, literature and music are not universally loved.

I've played like 10 or 15 games since and some of them legit bangers but I keep on thinking about Starfield and the adventures I had in it.

I'm sure the game did well enough to make a profit for Bethesda/Microsoft. The game had 2.1+ million gamers who either paid $35, $99 or $249 for the prelaunch access. It was probably even a minor system seller, even though I'm sure MS was hoping for a Halo or Gears of War type system seller.

I’ve still got Starfield installed put it on the back burner for several other games. Got married to Sarah and now I’ve left her for new constellation members. I wonder if she misses me.

I want to get into outpost building and ship building but man the controls on console are so ass. Just slapping the two quest items in the Crimson Fleet mission onto my ship to protect me from magnetic blasts or whatever, was a pain.

And it didnt even work. I'm still flying the Mantis ship and I kept dying in like six seconds. For some reason I can't upgrade its shields? The mass becomes too big. I had to go back to using the Frontier, and upgrade its fuel tanks so I can jump further than one system at a time. That ship, I was able to put two of the converter things or whatever on it so the magnetic blasts did 0 damage. I guess I should just build my own ship.

I had enough, of the negativity that is. I have so many people on ignore now mostly because of this game and the general platform warring. I’m just not interested in their negativity and complaints about every little thing they can think of, and the plastics war is just annoying noise since I’m on PC anyway. It has made the board quieter but a lot more positive. This thread has always been nice though, as you say most here are still able to see the good things behind some less optimal game design choices. It’s still where I put 95% of my gaming time.

Haha... Ya, that part where you put two new parts on your ship was annoying and a little frustrating to figure out how to do it.

Go complete the Freestar Ranger quest line. You get the Star Eagle ship at the end and it performs great in combat. It also helps to level up your ship to ship combat skills, as those battles at the end of the Crimson Fleet quest line are challenging.

People can’t accept that others can really enjoy an imperfect game.

Starfield isn't perfect but it's perfect in what it tries to do which is transport the player into a universe where you feel like an explorer across worlds. It may need a couple of tweaks (most I don't have a real issue with) but that can only serve the purpose. I'm still playing it almost exclusively and it's been months. I just can't seem to pull myself away. Excellent game.

The 6.1 million players in the beginning ( I believe that was in the first 48 hrs, could be wrong) were early release. Every one of those copies were bought. You had to pay the $100 dollars to get in early access. That's the version I bought myself.
