Maybe my expectations for media just get continually battered as I get older, but I rewatched Crystal Skull the other day and didn't mind it as much as when I first watched it. Samme for the prequel Star Wars trilogy ... again, maybe I'm just so inundated with modern bullshit movies I've just lowered my standards lol
Dial of Destiny, and the Disney SW trilogy, make Crystal Skull and the SW prequels seem waaaay better than they once did.

First person. What a waste. I categorically don't play first person games, so have no interest in both Avowed and this Indy game.

I'm betting this is going to limit sales/MAUs, because it seems there are far more people who refuse to play first person games than there are people who refuse to play third person games. Would be interesting to see which perspective Negaffers prefer.
What lol, the biggest platform this game is coming to is PC, and gamers on that platform will always prefer 1st person games for shooters.

90% of the people on this forum pretty much only play Sony games so the result would be obvious here tho.

It is an amateur decision to shit on a game because it is FP. How the fuck did you ever get into games if you don't like FP games?
Wut? 🤦‍♂️. I played games before FP was big at all (and truthfully before they even existed), but there are literally a lot of people who aren’t “shitting” on the game about it. Some people either can’t play FP games for too long, and people who flat out don’t like them. When did having an opinion about not liking first person games become such a cesspool fest? And to call it shitting on something because not everyone wanted to see FP with it, is frankly absurd (although I shouldn’t be surprised on Gaf, since people would take a stake in the chest for their console of choice here 😂).

The weird mishmash of 1st person gameplay but 3rd person cutscenes and platforming is jarring. It’s basically like older first-person shooters where you have to play through a section before you can really experience the character you play as in the setting (ex. Dark Forces/Jedi Knight).

To play an iconic character, you need to see that character in action. The first-person view puts players into a position that they never experience outside of a theme park ride. The hilarious first person hand-pump running and whipping isn’t Indiana Jones.

Troy Baker didn’t nail the voice but it’s doable unless you go the AI route.

I'm more concerned about the "we can create an original indy story for a modern gaming audience", naturally said by the "senior narrative designer" with the side of their head shaved.
I love how looks make or break a game for you.

Love it even more that side of their head shaved is seen by you as a worrisome sign.

Yep, not having his silhouette makes this game basically unplayable!

Martin Lawrence Lol GIF by Martin

There is a moment where you see your shadow on the wall while crouching and I thought it was an very cool Spielbergian moment.

Anyway, FP was the right choice. I rewatched a better quality video again and the game looks fantastic. Can’t wait.

This looks fucking terrible.

Subpar art direction and graphics that don't even look like a noticeable improvement on Wolfenstein's character models from last gen. First person failure. Animations and gameplay stiffer than a Walmart mannequin. Dogshit voice direction with no personality to it - it doesn't even look or sound like the VAs actually performed the cutscenes through mocap. I'm getting '00s licensed game vibes, and the lower end of them to boot.

Anyone who thinks this looks good or even slightly sufficient in any way needs a CT scan and a eye inspection. Amateur hour doesn't describe this.

They wanted it to be an uncharted clone so they could make fun of it for being an uncharted clone and tell everyone how they aren't going to buy it even though they wouldn't buy it no matter what it was or how good it is.
I wanted it to be an Uncharted clone because I enjoy it and the newer Tomb Raiders. An Indy licensed Uncharted clone would have had me jizzing my pants with delight and a day 1 instabuy.

The biggest issue with first person is that it minimizes the most recognizable thing about Indiana Jones - his silhouette. You always know that it's him in the movies as soon as you see this:

If you were to take a glance at this game during the moment-to-moment gameplay, there is very little that signals to you that this game is Indiana Jones and not just any other first-person shooter. You are only reminded of the fact during the occasional third-person cut away. It's a huge blunder by the developers and no amount of "it's in first-person to really make you feel like Indy!" is going to fix it.
I understand your point but at the same time I’m so done with third person action adventure games at this point, this actually looked like a breath of fresh air (I won’t be playing this, but just my honest thoughts).

First person, not an FPS, puzzles, whips and stealth - I actually think it’s great and there’s a lack of this type of AAA game IMO.

Correlation without causation.

But the correlation is still there and has been building for a long time
Indeed. When someone has a certain look, we can automatically assume a lot of things about their lives. And if they fit that checkmark, then we can automatically assume something negative about it, because that's how these reactions work.

Shaved head, rainbow colours - probably pro-feminism - ''oh dear lord that's a senior narrative designer these days?'' - Game must obviously suck, besides the fact that it's first-person.

Ayup.

I actually didn't have high hopes for an Indiana Jones game, but this looks shockingly fun to play.

And it's by fucking Machine Games? Fucking absolutely yes.

People really thought that a 80 year old Ford would voice a man in his 30s?
Did you watch the latest movie? He did.

(that digitally de-aged Harrison Ford combined with ready-for-retirement-home Harrison Ford voice was jarring as fuck)

That reveal was fucking dope!!! Aside from Star Wars, Indiana Jones were my favourite movies as a kid and a hero I really looked up to. I feel like Machine Games has captured the Essence of the original trilogy perfectly. Had me smiling ear to ear the entire time. This has moved up to my most anticipated game of 2024. Can’t wait!!

Well, that's how the people who hired him think, and half of why they did. It's all in their handbook.

1st person makes sense for shooters that are played with mouse and keyboard. But the new Indy game isn't a shooter, it would work much better as a third person action game like Uncharted or Tomb Raider. That's what people were expecting to see.

A decade of the same formulaic cinematic third-person Playstation games have conditioned gamers into thinking that any upcoming game that deviates from that formula is instantly trash. At least this game seems refreshing. If this game was third-person, y'all would be complaining that its trying to copy Uncharted. Lets not pretend otherwise.
Sorry to tell you sir, but PlayStation didn't invent and isn't exclusively the current maker of 3rd person games. 3rd person is one of 2 fucking perspectives that literally all games adhere to. I don't see much skepticism about Hellblade using this "formulaic" perspective from the same fanboys who claim to be so bored of PlayStation's stuff.

Perspectives either fit or they don't. 1st person doesn't really fit Indiana Jones. As smart as you seem to be, you must realise that Uncharted is heavily inspired by Indiana Jones, correct?

Worst still, this doesn't even look like a good 1st person game. Combat looks shit, they don't seem to trust the 1st person POV for traversal so they cut to 3rd person every time Indy swings, and that last gun shot they cut away from looks like it has zero weight o it.

You can't dispute anything that I've said. The irony is that the most insecure who know games look bad are the loudest to push back.

There's difference of opinion, and then there's just the delineation between minimal standards and delusion.
I did dispute it, it was a stupid post. The majority of people are impressed if you read the thread, even some certain posters have given begrudgen praise, if only minimal.
Just because you tried to add your 'if you dissagree with me you're an idiot' schpeel doesnt mean people wont come back at you.

well not a big fan of First Person in this type of games (adventure, rpg's) but i gonna give it a try tho.. btw i dont know but i dont really like Troy's voice on this character. well maybe its just fatige cuz his in so many games.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
I liked what I saw. I'll check this out. My perception of Avowed hasn't changed. I suspected that Hellblade 2 was being overhyped and will be a very niche game and this did nothing to spark my interest.

You know if they made it third person, it would be nothing *but* direct comparisons to Uncharted through the games lifetime.

This way, they can differentiate and make their own spin on it.

So Troy Baker did the performance, I did not recognize it was him...good job to be honest 👏

I've heard his voice in so many games that it was instantly recognizable, but he did a pretty decent attempt at a younger Ford.

Todd Howard and first person.

What a damn disapointing combo.

I'm surprised they went for Harrison Ford looks to be honest.

The biggest possible audience for this game is on PC, who play with mouse and keyboard.

I doubt Xbox players prefer 3rd person games over 1st ones, and PC players prefer 1st person by far, so not sure who you are talking about, PS gamers, neogaf or?

Uncharted got a much bigger focus on being impressive and cinematic than on having a good gameplay, doesn't sound like what a PC gamer prefer.

No, the looks don't "make or break" it for me, what he said is what gives me concern. Especially when it concerns an IP that's set in time period in which it's set. It's not set in "modern times", why does the narrative need to be altered for "modern audiences".
It's just very typical of what someone that looks like that would say.

It’s funny how people take one sentence that Indy’s female companion said to him out of context as concern that she’ll be condescending and snarky towards him. Like, have there not been spunky and witty female characters that go back and forth with their male counterparts in countless stories across the history of storytelling? How does one line of this lady telling Indy, “I hope you can keep up!” indicate that she’s in any way as smarmy as Helena?

That wasn’t a belittling statement towards Indy, it wasn’t meant to make him feel washed up, that was simple banter, to which Indy immediately countered. The game clearly shows us that this will be an Indiana Jones story, with him at the core of it all. One sentence sending people up in arms is as ridiculous as it is humorous.

That doesn't change my opinion. I could spend the rest of the day posting pics of third person games with famous character IPs. Batman, Spiderman, the list goes on and on.

No one can change your opinions. It is yours.

I'm just giving examples that show first person and licensed IP can go very well hand-in-hand and be received very well on release.

It's better than making a straight-up Uncharted / TR clone, as those are already well established third person games.
