Palworld has the highest concurrent player count of any paid game in the history of Steam

How long is it? Is there replayability? Can we expect these numbers to hold or will they drop like a rock in a week or two?

Yet they were very quick to take down the fan made mods changing the pals into Pokemon... Nintendo have totally and financially ruined individuals over the years for breaching their copyright so I am sure they are not just shrugging their shoulders over Palworld. I am sure their lawyers have been hard at work trying to find any way they can to get Palworld taken down, the long it goes on without any action the more likely it is that they don't have a case.
Its likely the reason for taking down the mod, isn't because there was a fan made mod changing the Pals into Pokemon but because the modder was charging users for the mod that changed the Pals to Pokemon.

Its not gonna just vanish but player count will drop. will probably be at a few hundred thousand for months. THen if they can keep updating it, they got a huge game on their hands.

You can play alone offline. This means new players never have to worry about needing active servers to play. The main disadvantage of multiplayer is it has a shelf life. While offline single player can outlive the developer.

The game was revealed a long time ago. If Nintendo actually had a case it would've not been released.

Crazy how much this has blown up, I mean its fairly fun and I like it but I wouldn't say its the best game ever made and would never have predicted it to be topping the steam charts

It is easy to play, has a fully featured and functional offline mode, AND have no predatory monetization of any kind.

The 2nd part is important, because there was no way in hell the multiplayer would survive the influx if everyone has to bottleneck through the online server. The game can handle as many customers as it likes.

The third part is also important, because monetization usually require the game to be deliberately made less fun so people would fix the flaws with money. This game does not have any of that.

Just when you don't think the embarrassing discourse surrounding Palworld can't get any worse.
People are having a field day putting them down, so it's all good.

This is huge for XBox. Crazy how something can just come out of no where and be a hit.

Who ever built this relationship with these Devs at MS needs a raise. MS need to support them further as this is a potentially huge game to have.
If it was offered and anyone at Sony passed on the game, his/her/xirs ass is grass. I like to think that even "haters" here on GAF would recognize its value if they saw a presentation.

Or maybe the execs at Sony didnt want to get involved with a game that is clearly going to be involved in a lawsuit at some point, in which case they've made the correct decision

I doubt a lawsuit is coming. The game has inspiration like any other and is capitalizing on a sleepy slow expensive industry and giving gamers something to play. A lot of salt will be coming like with BG3. They've pulled the rug from many teams trying to brainstorm and figure out the next hit, if it was so easy then it would've been done.

They deserve praise and reward and not claiming every facet of a game needs a million spent on it.

No one passed on it. There’s no Early Access/Game Preview program on PS, and those games are a case-by-case basis. Usually they’re only added in exchange for exclusivity.

But a vast majority of the success is from Steam that has NO affiliation with Xbox. There isn't even cross play with Steam and Xbox.

I’m thinking that Microsoft has kept a low profile because they don’t know what Nintendo think about it. And I’m thinking if they would start showing interest in the studio for an acquisition Nintendo would be more aggressive.
But it was impossible to know it would blow up like this, it’s been shown before with little hype. Turns out it was just surprisingly fun to play.

Huh? What did I miss?

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Not to take away from their success but didn't they admit they spent nearly $6,789,250.00 in development cost? And they also admitted that they borrowed a lot of that money so if you take into account interest that number should be higher and as far as I know this game has no micro transactions so I'm sitting here wondering how they plan to to recuperate their development cots.

7 million at $20 is $140M.
Edit: "That translates into approximately $189 million USD in Steam sales in 5 days."
They made enough for the development costs.

Your probably correct! Even if they had to pay back double their investment they should have gotten enough by now I guess the 1 billion yen quote they gave was distracting me from this conclusion.

Impressive, really impressive. But whoever made up the story that this was built by a bunch of amateur devs. It's 100% not true and probably a marketing gag to make it standout as an overnight sensation.
This game was made by absolute professionals, who knew exactly what they were doing.

Based on the headline, I actually don't disagree.

It's great word of mouth but the game isn't polished or finished and has a reasonable pitch.

What I've played on PC hasn't left me impressed to say it's worthy of the massive sales but also want to see that money bein put back ASAP, into what it can be.

It's decent now despite the Internet darling status.

Someone has to come back down to earth and call it like it is.

Nah mate, take one look at the game and you will see that's not true.

A game that is in early access and is advertised as such?

The peak of this game is growing its past 7 million and the the end is still not in side.
But mind you..there are 138 million subscribers on Steam, take that as a sidenote😉

The dev’s last game was only on Steam and Xbox also.

Wow, that sounds like they actually believe what they are saying. Just goes to show how internally facing the games industry is and it gives us a brief peek behind the curtain about how the really think.

Eurogamer are looking at Palworld and seeing it purely from an industry point of view, a blatant cheap rip-off to cash in off someone else's hard work and thinking that it's us the consumers who are the victim and being exploited. Well Eurogamer, the average consumer doesn't see it like that AT ALL. We see a fun game that totally respects it's audience by giving the freedom to tailor the experience to whatever they want it to be, we see a one-off purchase that offers great value for money and puts together a package of all the best bits from our favourite games without trying to tell us what it thinks is best for us. If anything it's the games industry that is the victim and i don't mean the indie devs or the low paid undervalued staff crunching at big development houses, its the multi-billion dollar corporations who are being exploited. The whole reason that Palworld is able to flourish is directly because of the actions of the big developers and publishers who have been going down a road for a long time that has looked to milk as much money from their userbase as possible, steadily introducing predatory tactics and mechanics time after time and in doing so has eventually sucking the fun out of the end product. It has put the bean counters first and lost sight of exactly what they originally set out to do. I am sure that I am not wrong by assuming that the first question being asked during early development meetings is "what can we take away to get the customers to spend more whilst keeping it just fun enough to retain them?" rather than simply "what else can we add to make it more fun to play?"

I say (gotta) fuck 'em all, if Pokemon company had actually been working all these years to deliver the best most fun product they could for their customers then there would have been no room for a rip off that is way better quality than the material it's copying. These big companies come out saying shit like "we don't think doing that would be right for our customers" when in reality what they are thinking is "we won't make enough money by doing that". They are not our friends, they see us a resource to be exploited as much as possible and it has become so engrained in them that they can't even see it anymore. This Tweet by Eurogamer proves that. Why should we as consumers give a damn if it takes money away from a massive company that has been doing that to us for decades especially when what we are getting is way way better in every way than the real thing.
