GAF Votes: Top 50 Nintendo titles of all time

After Famitsu readers ranked their top 50 Nintendo titles of all time, I wondered what a top 50 list ranked by GAF would look like. Well, I guess there is only one way to find out I suppose? Like the voting thread for “GAF games of the year 2011” we’ll pick ten games which should be in the top 50 Nintendo games of all time. Let’s start with the rules, shamelessly ripped from the GOTY 2011 thread:

Voting rules

  1. List up to ten games, in order from one to ten.
  2. Follow the format below as listed below
  3. You can use the game list in post #2 to help you remember which games Nintendo published in the past. This list is NOT necessarily comprehensive. Don’t see your favorite game on there? Put it in your list, and we’ll update the games list with your nomination.
  4. Add your thoughts! Put a semicolon (;) after each game and write what you thought. It’s great to read thoughts of fellow GAF’ers on Nintendo’s games and why they should be in the GAF Top 50 Nintendo Games of all Time.
  5. Please don’t use abbreviations for titles. Write down the whole title to avert confusion
  6. Multiple votes for the same title will disqualify your entire ballot.
  7. Each user may only vote once, but you may edit your ballot as often as you like until the deadline.
  8. Want to talk about another poster’s list? Quote it. Any unquoted ballots (those outside a quote block) will overwrite your own previous vote.
  9. Voting Ends February 3rd at 11:59pm, PST

Sample Ballot

Please note you don’t have to follow the format exactly, but it will make the thread easier to read and follow.

1. Game A ; Your thoughts on Game A.
2. Game B ; Your thoughts on Game B.
3. Game C ; Your thoughts on Game C.

And so on.

Scoring system

Same point system as the GAF Games of the Year thread

1. Game A ; 4 points
2. Game B ; 3 points
3. Game C ; 3 points
4. Game D ; 2 points
5. Game E ; 2 points
6. Game F ; 2 points
7. Game G ; 1 point
8. Game H ; 1 point
9. Game I ; 1 point
10. Game J ; 1 point

What Games Count?
  • Every Nintendo game released on NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.
  • This includes titles released before the 31st of December 2011.
  • Second Party titles count as well. For instance, games like Goldeneye 64 or Eternal Darkness, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie are allowed.
  • Voting for imported titles is allowed. If you list an import game, please mention which country you are from. Otherwise I will assume you didn’t read the rules and the vote will not count.
  • Remakes and significant upgrades to games count too.
  • Compilations are not allowed. Examples: Super Mario All Stars (SNES) and the The Legend of Zelda compilation disc on Gamecube.
  • Ports that amount to “ROM dumps”, i.e., ports with no additional content or significant changes, are not allowed. Think of NES Classics Ice Climbers on GBA or Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary.
  • If you’re unsure about a game, just ask!

Ah jeeze, this could take a while.

1. Super Mario 3 ; having experienced the first Super Mario in 1987 when we got our NES, and Mario 2 when it followed, the anticipation for Mario 3 was huge. The commercials, the magazines, The Wizard. Every waking moment was spent anticipating this game, and when it dropped it was the best game I had ever played, and I still rank it as one of the top platformers of all time. Orgasmic level design, fantastic soundtrack, and a visual style that just sings to me.

2. Zelda II ; The haters can suck it, THIS is truly the best Zelda game. A fun experience system, a soundtrack UNMATCHED by any Zelda game afterwards. The combat was leagues better than the previous Zelda, and the extremely responsive controls matched with a difficulty that was tough but fair made it thrilling to play. To this day I can still pick it up and play it with no problems. People like to say Zelda is about exploration, but this game to be EMBODIED exploration. The caves, the forests, the dungeons, HOLY CRAP THE DUNGEONS.

3. Super Metroid ; Scared the pants off of me when I played it at 10. It presents a world that is so immersive that you can forget you're playing a video game. It's like one big collaboration of awesomeness; all the ingredients come together to make a perfect game. The soundtrack, the graphics, the gameplay. The presentation and narrative is EXCELLENT; a short intro that briefs you on the situation and bam, from that point on the game is narrated only by your exploration.

4. EarthBound ; For the longest time I thought that you had to experience this game in the era in which it was released to appreciate it, until I introduced it to my wife who LOVED it, and friends who had never heard of it outside of Smash Bros, who also wound up loving it. Extremely dated RPG mechanics are made tolerable and enjoyable by small tweaks and additions (HP wheel). An out of this world soundtrack and visual style that has flare (I WILL NOT USE THE WORD CHARMING I HATE IT), not to mention a trippy and rather subversive story. This game SPOKE to 10 year old me.

5. Super Mario 64 ; Not a lot needs to be said about this one. Introduced 3d platform mechanics that are still used to this day, and some that have never been replicated as well as they were introduced here.

6. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door ; EASILY my favorite RPG of all time. Hundreds of pages of text and dialogue, ALL presented in a hilarious manner. Each character truly feels like they have CHARACTER. Not since a Monkey Island game way back in the day had a game made me laugh out loud. 90% of my time in this game was spent either in awe or laughing. Each scenario was unique and enthralling, with two standouts; the Glitz Pit and the murder mystery aboard the train. A blessing and a curse, because Super Paper Mario was a huge letdown compared to this game.

Could F-Zero GX count?

Edit: Thanks for answering quickly, Sadist.

Compliations of games shouldn't count either (i.e. Mario All-Stars, even though that's more than a straight port).

I have a feeling I'm going to be editing this one quite a bit.

1) Zelda: Ocarina of Time; One of the few games in my life that has hyped me so damn much and then totally surpassed that hype. I will never forget the day I finally got my hands on my own copy on the US release date in November 98. Shattered all my expectations.
2) Zelda: Link to the Past; The first videogame I ever saved up my own money to buy. I still remember I would save up change I found, any holiday money I'd get from relatives to finally afford the 70 dollar price tag at Nobody Beats the Wiz. Back then we only had Toys R Us and The Wiz. There were no Best Buys or Targets around here. I finally bought it on a Sunday afternoon. Still remember being irked at the beginning for not having a sword, but I was excited as hell nonetheless.
3) Super Metroid; I remember when my brother got this game and I remember watching him playing it being fucking scared out of my mind. I have never seen a game that reminded me so much of a sci-fi/Aliens type movie. The intro was just such an amazing and horrifying experience to watch. When he first got to Zebes and everything was quiet I was so scared of what was to come. When he came back up the elevator and the space pirates showed up with the music kicking in, scared the shit out of me. I seriously could not play this game alone for awhile until I built up enough courage to.(back in the day we used to play games in the basement.)
4) Zelda 1; What can I say? The original. You just get plopped into a giant world filled with monsters, have no real idea on where to go, most of everything is trial and error, just go out exploring/adventuring. I can compare a modern game to this: Dark Souls. Although not exactly the same, but the original Zelda never ever really handheld you like most of todays games.
5) Super Mario Bros 3; I remember when this was announced my brothers and I were blown away, especially since it was pretty much revealed through a movie(The Wizard). When it finally came out, I was sick with the flu, and I wasn't allowed to go and play it with my bros. A week later, I finally got to play it. Awesome evolution of Mario gameplay. World map, quest items, story, awesome music, new characters, etc.
6) Metroid Prime; Retro Studios really blew my mind with this game. I had my apprehensions when I first heard it was gonna be a first person perspective game. But as screenshots filtered out, I slowly started getting excited. This was another game that surpassed the hype for me. When it finally came out, I was sucked right in and it was tough to put it down. One of my favorite games of that generation. After this game series and then seeing DKC Returns, I'm hoping that quote about Miyamoto wanting to see Retro do the Zelda series has some merit. If there is one company I'd like to see try out the Zelda franchise, Retro is the one I'd want to do it.
7) Goldeneye 007; Rare was a juggernaut during this time, but jeez this game changed everything, especially multiplayer wise. If a college dorm didnt have at least a few N64s during this time, there was something wrong. So many endless hours in this game trying to unlock all of the cheats and beat all the 00 agent difficulties, and many more hours just screwing around with multiplayer.
8) Super Mario 64; Still remember the first time seeing this game in person at....The Wiz(again). Took one look at the controller and had no idea how to hold it. We were kind of passing by watching people play it, it looked amazing. It wasn't until my oldest brother got a job at Blockbuster and managed to rent out an N64 with a few games, M64 being one of them. Mario evolved yet again, and in a huge way. Everybody knows how good this game was and still is.
9) Links Awakening; Got this for Thanksgiving, which was odd. I remember being at my Aunts house when I got this, and I just couldn't put it down. I remember the game being strange as a kid, and now that I look at it, it really was a strange game, but it was so damn good. Took me a long time to finally beat the final bosses. I was grounded at the time and beat it secretly.
10) Donkey Kong Country 2; Got this for Christmas that year it came out, and remembering how awesome the first one was, I knew it couldn't fail. Not only did it not fail, it was even better in every category. The music, animations, addition of Dixie, all of the bonus coins and DK coins, the secret world, it was just amazing.

I'm prob gonna have to tweak this list.

1. Earthbound/Mother2 ; Amazing 16-bit RPG. Charming, eccentric, and amazingly well-done.
2. Zelda: A Link to the Past ; The series' best entry was a must-have title for the SNES.
3. Super Mario World ; The colors melted my little eyes out the Christmas we got this along with with the system.
4. Super Mario Bros ; The title that started it all for many gamers around the world.
5. The Legend of Zelda ; Link's inaugural adventure showed how vast of an experience was possible on Nintendo's hardware.
6. F-Zero ; The soundtrack! And MODE SEVENNNNN!!!
7. Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages ; Amazing games for the GBC, going a little outside of the Zelda mold was not a bad decision at all!
9. Paper Mario ; The N64 shined in this light RPG masterpiece.
10. Mario Paint ; I wasted endless hours dicking around with all the fun minigames and tools in this unique Nintendo title.

Honorable Mention: Super Mario Kart, Zelda: Four Swords, Dragon Quest IX (if that counts, N-published?), Mother 1&3, Super Mario 3 and StarFox.

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario World
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
7. Super Metroid
8. Super Mario 64
9. Luigi's Mansion
10. Paper Mario

I think that's it. There are lots of GREAT Nintendo games that aren't Mario or Zelda, but picking them to vary my list more would just be doing it for that very reason. In all honesty, most of Nintendo's greatest games are Mario or Zelda related, so yeah, I'll let my list accurately reflect that.

I really wanted Diddy Kong Racing and a Mario Kart to make the list, but nothing could make the cut for them.

Damn, I'm having a hard time deciding whether it should be the games that I think hold up the best today, or the games that are the most important. Super Mario Bros wouldn't make the list for the former, would for the latter

1.Super Mario Galaxy 2
2.Super Metroid
3.The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
4.Super Mario World
5.The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6.Xenoblade Chronicles
7.Metroid Prime
8.The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
9.Super Smash Brothers Melee
10.Mario Kart 7

Too hard. Too much games.

not to mention mother , metroid ,Kirby and all those strange game like animal crossing(how many hours did i spend in this?).

4-Super Mario Galaxy 2
5-Metroid Prime
6-Super Smash Bros Melee
7-Super Mario Galaxy
8-Super Metroid
9-Paper Mario (N64)
10-Super Mario 64

It's very difficult to do a top 10 since there's too much games.

Are you going to distinguish between the original versions and remakes of games like Ocarina of Time? Since it seems that most people are voting for the original version of Ocarina of Time for some reason, and I don't think my vote should be counted separately from theirs'.

Actually this is why I didn't append "3D" to my vote. I do think the 3DS version is the superior.

1. Legend of Zelda : A Link To The Past; the best instalment of the series with a perfect difficulty curve. The world slowly opens up as you progress.
2. Super Mario Bros 3; a brilliant platformer chock full of secrets to get lost in
3. Super Metroid; did for metroid what zelda 3 did for zelda, and with a fantastic atmosphere to boot.
4. Legend of Zelda : Links Awakening; another great zelda game with the best dungeon in the series(eagles tower + columns)
5. Starfox 64; superb dogfighting, choices & variety. and of course brain + eyes.
6. F-Zero GX; best in the series - supremely hard, supremely punishing but never unfair.
7. Super Mario RPG : Legend of the Seven Stars; crazy fun jumping on heads to get secret chests.
8. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door; fell in love with this game when I challenged for the wrasslin title.
9. Wario Land : Super Mario Land 3; collecting the treasures was absurdly fun. moon get.
10. Kirby's Dream Course; awesomely crazy puzzle/physics game.

1. Super Smash Bros. Melee; I have put more hours into this game than most other games combined. It is the greatest video game of all time
2. Super Mario World; Pure elegance in design, and nearly perfect. Game designers, take note.
3. Star Fox 64; I admit SF64 placing so high is nostalgia talking, but the 3DS port still holds up great.
4. MOTHER 3; The greatest videogame the west never got and an emotional rollercoaster that will tug your heart strings.
5. Fire Emblem (7: Rekka no Ken); My most played portable game outside of Pokemon Silver and there's always some new secret I don't know about.
6. Super Mario 64; the progenitor of three dimensional game design and still a blast to play.
7. Pokemon Black/White; The best Pokemon game in a long while and the easiest to get into for newcomers.
8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island; It's Yoshi's Island, I shouldn't have to explain!
9. Mario Kart DS; The best Mario Kart, but MK7 could eventually take this spot.
10. Sin & Punishment 2: Star Successor; The most underrated Wii game! Buy it! Now!

Honorable Mentions: The Paper Mario and M&L games, Advance Wars

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) ; Favorite game of all time, nuff said
2. Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (SNES) ; A classic in the way the game presents itself and set up the dungeon/puzzle design for future titles
3. Super Mario 64 (N64) ; changed platformers as we know it
4. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) ; ingenious level design and platforming
5. Super Mario Bros. (NES) ; well, just about everything started with this :p
6. Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES) ; really setup future platforming titles including hidden elements and item usage
7. Metroid Prime (Gamecube) ; created a new aspect on First Person Adventure titles
8. Super Mario 3DLand (3DS) ; the most fun handheld Mario I've ever played
9. Pikmin (Gamecube) ; really creative and cute
10. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (Gamecube); really loved the interaction, exploration, and music. biggest twist on a LOZ title outside of Majora's Mask

8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

So difficult. Didn't want to think too hard about my choices or else I'd be thinking about it forever.

1. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB)
4. Advance Wars (GBA)
5. Super Metroid (SNES)
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
7. Donkey Kong (GB)
8. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
9. F-Zero X (N64)
10. Pikmin 2 (GC)

That was HARD. So many amazing games I had to leave off, really struggled with Metroid Fusion or Pikmin 2 for #10. I think I could seriously do a top 50. :3

1. Super Metroid (SNES)

Probably the perfect game. It has no hand holding, which has plagued current Nintendo and is able to convey a story without any excessive text, barring the intro, which is very memorable itself. I immersed myself in this game for months as a teenager.

2. Super Mario Brothers 3. (NES)

The quintessial Mario game and first one to start experimenting with themed world, a brilliant addition. Loved the art direction, the controls and the tight level design.

3. Ocarina of Time (N64)

I was highly skeptical of Zelda's 3d transition. I was never hyped at the game and thought it was gonna be a disaster based on the preview screens in Nintendo Power. However, after playing game I was impressed at all the revolutionary implementations--Z targeting, combat, day time cycles. I was hooked after a few minutes. Still the best 3d zelda, unmatched by its successor. Although WW is up there for me as well.

I'm only doing three.

1. Super Metroid ; the GOAT metroidvania game (yes, better than Aria of Sorrow), loaded with secrets, great set pieces, great music, flawless controls, and very balanced difficulty. Best intro and ending of any Nintendo game.
2. Metroid Prime ; the best artwork of any FPS (or FPA, whatever) released in the past 10 years, almost perfectly brings the experience of Super Metroid into 3D.
3. Goldeneye 007 ; my nostalgia vote goes here, played more multiplayer from this title than I care to admit. Great weapons, location based hit detection and stealth systems were a breath of fresh air for the genre, the objectives livened the game up beyond the usual "run from A to B while clearing monster closets" that permeated FPS at the time. Amazing multiplayer maps.
4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ; Combined the sense of awe of Mario 64 with the quasi-open world freedom of LoZ. Time travel mechanics and dungeon items were well implemented. Introduced the horse. Hook shot and bow/arrows were boss. Introduced Z targeting. Really only marred by the Water Temple. Epic final encounter(s). To date, the only 3D Zelda game where the intro isn't a fucking chore.
5. FZero GX ; one of the top 5 pure arcade racers ever in my opinion. Marred only by the broken difficulty in story mode and lack of compelling multiplayer.
6. Super Mario Bros. 3 ; Nintendo at its most creative "we're just having fun out here." A completely zany twist on SMB complete with a board game mini-game for the "overworld". Flawless gameplay and graphics that still hold up. Gets the spot over SMW due to more memorable levels and the epic reveal in The Wizard.
7. Super Mario 64 ; The game that introduced half of the modern world to 3D gaming (unless you're one of those Tomb Raider or Jumping Flash heathens). To date one of the best games to just turn on and fuck about bouncing off walls. The recent speed run thread is a testament to how tight the gameplay is.
8. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past ; A surprisingly dark game with graphics that still hold up to this day. One of my favorite SNES games to replay other than Super Metroid. Still the best items in any LoZ game.
9. Mario Kart 64 ; Blue sparks. Bring it. Block Fortress. All day err day.
10. Star Fox 64 ; One of my favorite score-attack games ever. Controls are silky smooth and the system rewards you for not button-mashing. Over the top cheese has given it life as one of the most quotable games of all time.

1. Paper Mario-So much charm and fun in one game. For some reason I like it even more than its sequel. I try to play through this once a year, and it never gets old.
2. Yoshi's Island-best game on the GBA, one of the best of the SNES.
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2[edited]-My favorite mainline mario platformer. Also possibly my favorite video game OST of them all. I fucking LOVE the orchestral stuff. While the first one was freaking amazing, this one refined the gameplay even further. Just, so good.
4. Wind Waker-My first Zelda, and hoo man did it suck me in. I can still play through it today and have fun. Oddly enough the sailing never bored me!
5. Metroid Prime-Best adventure game on the GCN.
6. SUPER
SMASH BROTHERS
MELEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-Still play it with friends in college, 10 years after release.
7. Twilight Princess-Really growing on me now that I've gotten past the first 5 hours.
8. F-Zero GX-Best racing game on the GCN, if SSX 3 doesn't count.
9. Advance Wars-Gets hard in places, but I still love it, even if I can't finish it.
10. Pikmin 2-A fun take on the rts genre, a definite must have for any Wii/GCN collection.

Out of those I've played so far.
