Tomb Raider Review Thread!

Reviews are surprisingly positive, but they are praising the elements that I am not interested in (combat, gritty story, polish etc) and are luke-warm towards the elements I am (puzzles, platforming and exploration).

But I want a brand new modern tomb raider fix, I want puzzles and exploration and well... tombs, and I can't see any other games out there that will give me that fix :(

I'm really in two minds about buying this...

Um....from IGN
"The Tomb Raider heritage shows itself in the game's secret tombs, which are secreted around the island for you to discover. These are self-contained one-off puzzles that lead the way to treasure, and they are frequently ingenious, challenging enough to make you feel properly clever when you find the solution."

So, when did polish become something gamers aren't interested in?

This game feels a lot more character driven then Uncharted ever was.

I love Uncharted and it is definitely one of my favorite series of all time. But I do admit that if it wasn't for the voice talents of Nolan North, Nathan Drake would've been just another wannabe Indiana Jones in a really cool action game. Nolan North really brought out the character personalities and made Drake an icon. It's like Harrison Ford bringing Indiana Jones to life. Can't imagine Indiana Jones as any other actor.

In Tomb Raider, the whole game seems to focus on Lara's growth as a character. I like that. I like how everything around the gameplay and environment is focused on Lara as the character more than the outside plots surrounding it. You definitely feel her pain and the emotion she endures on this island.

It works for an origin based story like this, but it'll be tough to top it if there's a sequel. In the sequel, it won't be as strong as this one when it comes to character development. All I see is more elaborate set pieces, bigger explosions, crazier crap going on, and maybe a cheesy love story. So my encouragement is to enjoy this one while it lasts. Because if you think this one tries to be Uncharted, I'm sure the sequel would be even more.

So mysterious island in Southeast Asia for this one... gets me thinking of other potential settings in the future (fun to speculate). Desert would be cool, especially on the PS4.

A sequel can't take the same hardened survivalist tact of this one. It would have to focus on different themes.

Lara goes from innocent girl to killer in 5 minutes, wah wah. Yeah, let's just have every videogame star a psychopath that feels no remorse killing 100s of people. Lmao, the narrative disconnect criticism is so cliche at this point.

Just because it's oft-cited doesn't mean it's any less valid.

You make a narrative game, you pay the consequences for not following through with the logical consequences of it.

I guess it's great that the game is reviewing well, but this just isn't my Lara Croft. I don't want the more realistic, more relatable Lara. I want the Indiana Jones x James Bond Lara that's larger than life and has fantastical adventures. Bring that Lara back, Crystal D, and we'll talk.

I prefer these type of characters myself. Something more light-hearted. I've said it before but I'm tired of video game developers being obsessed with making every character grim gritty gruff and miserable, with very little personality. Why so serious?

I'll even go so far and say that it's one of the many reasons the video game industry is crashing. But that's another story.

I think the reason everyone is complaining about this is because they made her first kill an emotional scene but then after that she's just blowing everything away. Makes sense.

That isn't even remotely what a reboot has to be. They could have rebooted back to the series roots that have been missing since CD took over. Tightened up the gameplay, made it less handholdy, gotten rid of their awful narratives.

I don't want reboots to "go back to their roots". I want them to try new things. I've played the old Tomb Raider games and there are plenty of criticisms to be leveled against them too. One one hand people complain when game series stagnate and on the other hand they complain when things deviate too much from what is expected. It seems like a lose-lose situation to me.

I got grudge sucked!
this just remind me of Hitman, when some of GAF people who got it early were saying it's the best thing ever and best of the series but then more actually played it and it turned to be absolute crap.

I've noticed a lot more gaffer's coming to its defense as of late. I've not played it so I have no dog in the fight.

Machinima's review is about what I expected from the game. It's a shame, I would have been fine with a metroid style Lara Croft with survival and stealth elements. But yeah, the combat is a major turn-off.

Yep. I'm still pissed that Ubisoft neutered the psychopath ending of Far Cry 3

Or maybe they can do new things that still fall within what the brand is supposed to be.

When Demons/Dark Souls are more Tomb Raider than Tomb Raider, something's wrong.

Crazy people maybe. It's too flawed to even be considered a good stealth game let alone a hitman game.

I liked how I explained the game's systems for you and you didn't reply back at all. Your argument isn't that great if there's no retort.

Also if the people that defend it are crazy, what can be said about your attitude about most games? Psychotic?

so, i watched the first hour of it through leaked youtube vids.....good lord it looks boring. there really doesn't seem to be any fun factor in it at all.

Yea just like DmC...

Oh wait.

Whether you like the direction the franchise is going in or not doesn’t change the fact that so far it's been critically accepted and gaining a lot more promising buzz than previous Tomb Raider games.

The majority seem to like it and people that don't normally play Tomb Raider games are even excited for it. It looks like a really well made polished game. Seems like an overall succuss to me! ^_^
