Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

That to me says they aren't going to allow it, but they didn't want to give us all the bad news in one go.

Well, I say bad news. It's pretty irrelevant to me at this point.

Were you ever planning on buying it is the big question? If not, then all of this news is not for you. Its for those who are buying it.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Holy fuck.

If Sony pulls any of this shit, I'm done with gaming.

I agree. If Sony is doing the same online check drm shit... fuck them and PS 4 too.

So since we have established the concept is ok with you from a consumer rights perspective as long as the value is there for you, if MS has decent sales and prices, you would be ok with this?

That's pretty much what I was saying.

In my head each game has a price threshold where I'm willing to pay $X for the experience of playing the game. I'm not a collector and don't replay games hardly ever, so I don't view it as buying a physical good as I have no intention of keeping the game disc anyway.

Now I can get to that price X by waiting for deals, or buying and playing near launch and selling while the value is still high, maybe even get under it if I get a deal and sell it for a good price etc.

If I could get close to X in a digital game purchase, then I'd be all for it as it would save me the hassle of listing the game to sell, packing it and shipping it etc.

I get how much digital distribution sucks for collectors. But for people who just sell off every game, DD could be a great thing if prices were great like on Steam as we end up spending about the same amount of money and don't have to hassle with getting rid of game case and disc after beating it.

The problem is I don't see prices on consoles being anything like Steam this generation if ever.

I do dislike the 24 hour checks though, as I'd like to be able to play the games if my internet was down. But I can't recall the last time my internet was down for more than a couple hours anyway--other than power outages when it would be a moot point anyway. And I haven't had any power outages of great than 24 hours lately anyway as I'm in a high rise in a nice part of a city--wires are mostly buried and it's one of the first areas to get restored when power gets knocked out.

I am willing to take all of this shit if the family deal is as good as it sounds. Holy shit, this could be exploited so easily if this is the case.

No it can't. The game is locked to your console. .. and up to 10 people can play your game on your one console with their account. Not sure how this can be exploited.

Edit: It looks like it shared with 10 friends on any consoles! But.. I'm still mad!

There are probably 31 million users who never bought a game new and literally purchased a loss leading hardware device to play nothing but used games.

Nobody wants those customers, those are like those dicks in the coffee shop who buy the cheapest drink they can get, then sit on a sofa for 6 people using the internet on their laptop for 7 hours straight, whilst keeping their headphones in.

I hate those guys.

Microsoft cares. That's 31 million people who can't buy this console. At least, one would think.

In Steam that's manifested in a few ways--frequent and steep sales on the whole catalogue, and the ability for developers to produce unlimited keys for free (and thus for third party resellers to sacrifice margin for volume and offer discounts). Will Xbox One games be $35 to pre-order? Will they drop to $5 within 6 months? I doubt it.

I think you will indeed see game prices drop at a comparable rate on Xbox Live vs Steam. Even now it happens: For example X-COM is $40 on both. An older catalog title like Gears of War 3 is $20. If game publishers are allowed to sell Xbox activation codes to companies such as Green Man Gaming, I would not be surprised to see lower prices for new releases as well.

2) Digital-only PC platforms emerged in response to the decline of retail. Retail has not declined for consoles.

I agree that at the moment it feels like they jumped the gun. Much like how I felt when Valve made Half Life 2 require a Steam installation back in 2007. They are building the foundation and setting the expectations for the future. Im going to guess they'll be right in the long term.

3) There exists no digital-only platform that requires an ongoing membership fee (or that encourages an ongoing membership fee).
I'm assuming Silver will still exist for those who just want to play single player. They would be smart to allow free multiplayer (especially in F2P games) but if consumers are already ponying up for paid multiplayer I dont have high hopes on that side.

So ps4 guys now you now what is coming to to your console. Don't even think it will any different on your side. If not, MS will truley rock this E3 because the publishers will support this. If the publishers will support ps4 with out this restrictions then you can expect a new meaning to exklusive dlc for xbox one or maybe even kiss goodbye to a lot of third publishers.

And another one... it's getting easier to spot now.

Here's why I think Steam is a terrible comparison even beyond the pricing argument:

1. Steam has a guarantee that all games you own will be available all the way until they go out of business, and maybe even after that.

2. PC games don't have to go through steam in order to be released for the PC.

3. Steam actually has an offline mode that works indefinitely, not hours

4. PC games are way easier to abuse copying/installing and passing it on than console games, where you can not do that on a closed console system.

5. Most steam games will work as you continue to upgrade hardware and OS, while it's very possible not a single Xbox One game will work on the Xbox after that.

6. PCs are better than consoles in a lot of ways. You could at least say you're trading used games for better graphics or control schemes by giving up the consoles and the used games that went with it.

7. Some people did stay away from PCs for the very reason of wanting to own the games they buy and now are running out of places to turn to.

fixed one of your points

I like Stump's assessment of this as "digital-only, rather than digital-first". But I still am flummoxed how this is going to work for Microsoft unless the PS4 does something very similar.

I am willing to take all of this shit if the family deal is as good as it sounds. Holy shit, this could be exploited so easily if this is the case.

You think a company that came up with this incredibly complicated, anti-used games policy is going to offer/allow an easy exploit to this "family deal"? Think again.

MS already said that active duty military can have these restrictions waived.

Actually their wording made it seem like they would have specific systems given to Military branches to be used by deployed troops. This does nothing for the deployed military members who play their own consoles while deployed.

I wish Microsoft would allow me to nickname my Xbox.

"Bitch, find Tales of Viridian: Dawn of a New Moon for me".

After a while you'd start to sound like A Pimp Named Slickback, lol.

"Bitch don't start with that we need another computer shit again you say that every time a new iMac come out you ain't slick you better make that keyboard work bitch and stop playin with me!"

GAF.

Now, all your fears are comfirmed. Seriously.
WILL WE FINALLY STAND UP AND VOTE WITH OUR WALLETS THIS TIME?

I mean, its now or never. It either we stand or the gaming we currently know will cease to exist.

Xbone needs to fail hard. Is not faboyism, it needs to be for a better future in the console gaming.

It depends on the cost of games. Anything over $50(being generous) with this kind of bullshit is a nail in the coffin for me.

If Sony plays their cards right with the whole trading in games thing. As a long time Xbox/Xbox 360 user, it might be time for me to jump ship.

I frequently trade in games and even old consoles towards new ones, and based on everything we know about the Xbox One, it's not gelling well with me and my purchasing habits at all.

I was already considering the jump anyways because of Microsoft's focus on Kinnect and tv stuff that I have no interest in what so ever.

I'll miss Halo, sure, I'll admit that much.

Nope, but nobody complains about Steam. I don't blame some people for not liking things, but many are being completely unreasonable. The most controversial thing in the entire policy is the requirement of an internet connection. Everything else sounds completely reasonable and like a decent compromise between what could have been a worse case scenario.

GAF was pissed about fees when giving games to friends or when trading them in or reselling.

Microsoft announces that there are no fees for giving games to friends or trading them in or reselling. GAF still pissed.

GAF was pissed about no used games.

Microsoft announces, unequivocally, that used games are definitely supported on Xbox One, and even describes how they are supported. GAF still pissed.

Dude. Did you read anything ? There will be no used game market beside few shops like gamestop. In my country there is no Gamestop. 99% of used game market is done via ebay like allegro person to person.

All small shops won't trade anymore games.

If your friend gives you game it is forever tied to your account and you can't resell again (and this may be done only after someone is 30 days on your friendlist)

Most of EU market won't have used games.

It really hilarious that a policy that seems designed to ruin Gamestop will still have them sitting pretty - if not more so than they are now.

The rich get richer.

It's the grossest part. The only upside to this sort policy was watching Gamestop burn. Now they profit even more.

All in all it sounds kind of shit, but better then when Phil Harrison said there'd be fees involved.

Personally I'd have taken a fee, as long as the fee wasn't the price of the full game. At least then we'd have a lot more control over what we do with our games and who we sell it to instead of only the retailers that the publishers are ok with and people on my friends list for 30 days. And there's still probably a fee, just a hidden one only discussed between the publisher and retailer.

This has probably been answered already, so my apologies, but if I don't have an Xbox Gold membership and don't intend on getting one for the Xbox One, what will I not be able to do? I've read about all these features, but I'm still not sure which ones require a paid subscription and which ones do not.

Also, my two cents on the whole digital-only situation: if I had some sort of reassurance about backwards compatibility on future consoles (Xbox Two), I would not mind it. But if I'm going to invest in digital games, I want to be sure I will have access to them forever. Consoles have not been very good at this, but PCs have, and that's why I love Steam but am not convinced by the Xbox One. I would have been shafted if I had a ton of XBLA games.

I'm calling bs on this one. People are reading way, way too much into how that was written lol. Seriously. By the very nature that any publisher will be releasing a game on Xbox One, all games will have to meet these requirements. You won't need to contact some publisher and get permission from them. People really do try to find new ways to complain...

I thought your over defensive detailed breakdown on why a joke gif about x1 was inaccurate made you look like a shill. But wow, this takes the cake.

I usually don't believe in the whole viral marketing consipracy theory. But now i do.

Microsoft's insistence on controlling who can play what games and when on their console to such a ridiculous level both bewilders and frustrates me. All the rules and restrictions drive me away instantly.

I want nothing to do with any console that does this stuff. Unbelievable.

Wow, gonna be crazy when Timmy and Billy trade games for a weekend at launch, then neither can play their own games ever again..

How will Microsoft educate people about these complicated policies? How will parents know their children cannot trade games unless they want it to be permanent..

If I were a parent and I found out my kids game is lost forever because they tried to be nice and loan to a friend, I WOULD BE LIVID..

Comparing Steam and consoles is apples and oranges.
People who make use of Steam do it by choice. You dont
need it to play games on the PC. Its and additional service.
Consoles are closed environments. The service that is available
is the service you have to live with.

Im not supporting any system that treats its customers like slaves.
We are constantly giving up our rights through placation and compromises.
Just because we want new shiny toys.

Eh, you have a choice to not buy the X1 just as you have a choice to not use Steam. Being educated out in front helps you make an informed decision ahead of time. The market will reward who consumers support with sales. Choose another platform that has DRM you can handle.

I plan on buying a PS4 so this news doesn't really bother me, but I do wonder how much of this policy is going to be industry wide.

MS doesn't give a shit about them buying the console if they're not buying new games and DLC and paying for Live.

Still money up front for the system, and a larger install base.

I wonder if MS caved into developer demands, or this is a part of their larger strategy... Not really sure what that could be, though.

Remember when Harrison told Kotaku it'd be once every 24 hours and then Microsoft said that was a "potential scenario" lol

You know what, I've criticized kotaku in the past (you guys posted some awful stuff a long time ago), but from what I've been seeing, you have been doing great work lately.
Don't really know if something happened to the team or whatever, but you guys have been spot on with the rumors, and have had some interesting articles lately. Keep it up.
