io9: Do We Really Need an Obi-Wan Kenobi Standalone Movie?

Link. Not quoting all due to 'Rebels' spoilers.

Fans have been talking about an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie for years. Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor has repeatedly said he’d like to return to the role. Now, if rumors are to be believed, Disney could soon announce it as the next Star Wars Story film, perhaps as early as this weekend, during the D23 Expo. But between Marvel’s comics and the Rebels TV show, do we really need to see the further adventures of young Obi-Wan?

Given McGregor’s age—along with the fact that Disney seems to be shying away from any movies set around the prequel era—the film would almost certainly be set between Episode III, when we saw Kenobi turn the infant Luke Skywalker over to Owen and Beru Lars, and Episode IV, when the teenaged Luke meets Old Ben. Since Obi-Wan’s self-appointed goal was to watch over Luke, his film would presumably be set solely on Tatooine.

This era has been explored twice in the new canon: first in Marvel’s main comic, see through flashbacks as Luke reads Obi-Wan’s old journals, and more recently in Star Wars Rebels. The comics have so far included stories about the Jedi master protecting Luke and the Lars family from various threats, such as gangsters sent by Jabba the Hutt, as well as the wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan; but it’s Rebels that’s told the Obi-Wan story that may have rendered a live-action film moot.

Post your thoughts. I still think a Obi-Wan movie is a better idea than a Han Solo one.

We don't need any of the films.

We don't need another trilogy. We don't need a Han Solo or Obi-Wan film. We never needed the first or prequel trilogies.

We don't need any particular film. It's entertainment.

Any film they do, they do because they can and they want to entertain people. Period. Would an Obi-Wan film potentially be entertaining? Sure. A Han Solo one as well.

Yes, duh. Ewan is great, deserves another shot at a film that gives him more to work with, and there are years of an older Obi-Wan to explore between 3 and 4.

I hate this arguement, you don't have to watch it. We don't really need any movies.

I heard Rebel One characters were weaved into Star Wars Rebels really well, why not just fun?

We don't need one, but I think everyone wants one. Out of all the characters of the films, Ewan deserved better than the films he was saddled with.

I'll take a Obi-Wan movie over a Han Solo movie as long as they use Ewan McGregor. If they go with a different actor, forget it.

If they want to do a ghost Han Solo movie with Harrison Ford, I'm game.

The idea that we shouldn't want an Obi Wan movie because Rebels had a 5 minute Obi Wan scene is really weird. What even is this article?

I would love to see Ewan McGregor return to the role, even if it wasn't an "Obi-Wan movie" and just returned to that time period.

i would be more interested in a movie that is actually stand alone. a movie that concerns characters that aren't related to the Skywalkers, that aren't in the rebellion, that aren't featured in the other movies. it would be awesome to see a Star Wars movie that maybe doesn't even have any Jedi or Sith and introduces entirely different religious groups and cosmology.

it will never happen though because this series is run by investors rather than creators. "standalone" retreads are a safe, low-risk investment.

Not really, because there are other stories in the Star Wars universe that are better deserving of a film treatment, like The Old Republic or a Palpatine/Sith focused movie.

I mean, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, so if it's gonna happen I hope it's good, but it's not something I'm clamoring for.

There haven't been any Rogue One characters in Rebels yet except Saw, though he was handled well. Season 4 is the last, so we can probably expect Cassian and K2 to pop up at least since they're on Yavin now.

And yes, we want the Ewan Obi-Wan movie.

"need" is a really weird way of putting a spin off film from a media franchise. I can see the arguments on both sides. I'm not sure there is enough meat on the bone for a stand alone Obi-Wan movie doing whatever on Tatooine in the desert. However, they could expand on it quite a bit and show the build up of the Rebel Alliance alongside him to lead in to Rogue One.

I want it just for the possibility of a Dexter Jettster appearance. Easily the most underappreciated character from the prequels.

Stars Wars movies have always taken inspiration from other films and media for their core. The reason I'd like to see an Obi-wan movie, and the pitch I would use, would be to see a movie like Lone Wolf and Cub ... With Jedi.

It would be Obi-wan on his own with a baby Luke trying to get him to Tatooine. Anyway, I'd see that.

Do we really need enthusiast press thumbsuckers that begin their speculative vomitus about future films that may or may not ever happen with "do we really need?"

Especially when the subject in question is in regarding the umpteenth fantasy film we'll be paying to watch regardless?

What we 'need' is obviously not a primary concern when it comes to divorcing money from our wallets.

I agree 110% I am just amazed it came from a Miles and Bandit/Nightthrasher fan

Articles like this are weird. We didn't need a young Han Solo film but that shit is on it's way. Obi-Wan is a cool character and I'm sure Lucasfilm could come up with something interesting to do with him.

I mean, just because I like Miles doesn't mean I think Miles is needed. Given that argument, Peter isn't needed either. I just like having both around.

Again with a Bandit slander! DWAYNE4LYFE!
