Man, the outrage culture here is tiring.

She's not James Bond. She's the employee that replaced him after he quit his job. Fairly certain the British government is allowed to hire black women now.

Daniel Craig is still Bond. Get a grip, folks.
The fans who get annoyed when their franchises are changed to draw interest from non-fans are just as tired as you. But whatever, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just hope you are consistent enough to be just as annoyed at the people who beg for these decisions and then throw buzzwords at the historical fans when these decisions backfire in terms of revenue.

A female 007 is fine, I guess I just was surprised by this. Honestly didn’t see it coming.

For me it’s more an issue of physicality in terms of stunt work/melee combat believability but I’ll get over it.

James Bond is still Daniel Craig, and has been for the last 5 movies. He is still the main character.

He's worked with black colleagues before.

What's the big change? Or do you expect everything to remain exactly the same in each movie?

007 is James Bond, not a "woman who is also beautiful and black".
007 is a job title and 00 agents have been replaced before.

Hate to break it to you, but one day a black person might replace you too. The world will not change when he does.

Are you implying I'm some kind of racist because I'm not praising the decision to change 007 a.k.a. James Bond into a black woman? You realize it's Hollywood that's emphasizing her gender, race and beauty, right? I just want to continue seeing the role of James Bond played by a perceptive, intelligent, charming man like it has been for the last 50 years. Or did you not like those movies?

So much for being objective and just tired of outrage. A person made clear that they associate 007 with James Bond (like millions and millions of others over decades of films). And you responded by basically saying they are racist while pretending 007's job is somehow reflective of real life.:messenger_fearful:

Her over Idris Elba is... a disappointment at the very least. I was excited for Idris. I just feel... indifferent about this. I admit that I don't care for Bond movies but they are usually good as I have watched the last 3 and actually had excitement over the Elba rumor. oh well

I'm saying that they changed the employee, not the character.

Infer whatever you want, I don't know you and don't jump to conclusions like some of you seem to love doing.

Seems weird to me that they introduce a new character given Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) was an Agent in Skyfall. They could have just had her return to the field as a 00 tbh.

Nobody cares about Naomie Harris as Moneypenney much less as a 00. Besides, that would be actual development for an existing minority character and writers would rather just add another cheap tokenized character instead of actually, you know, writing.

I also love how optimistic people are that they're going to have an old, womanizing, white man walk in and reclaim the 007 status from the young, independent, black woman. The optics on that are not going to fly.

The outrage isn’t about the choice of a black woman being cast....it’s about another franchise that is trying to shoehorn in some social justice pr to fit in with the other butchered films that have tried to do the same......there has only been 1 good movie in the metoo era that has actually done a good job of putting up a good female action lead and that’s Wonder Woman...which was directed by a woman.

The fact that they are coming out with pr direction similar to other franchises that turned to shit going down the social justice appeasing path doesn’t get my hopes up that they will do a good job of this

There are not genuinely enough good directors and writers these days that will give justice to a good female lead character and bond films have historically not been very complicated films so I don’t think we are going to get a very solid part for the casting choice...will probably end up being a slightly better Halle berry jinx type character.

The press were trying very hard to make it look like she was playing Bond.

Rage bait at it's worst.

Pretty much, James Bond has always been the protagonist of the series, the code number for this film is probably some gimmick/twist they wanted to do for the film but especially since the production of Bond 25 has been a dumpster fire from injuries on set to production crew mutiny. Its like they leaked this shit on purpose to get people to talk about something else about the movie.

I'm not outraged personally, there is probably a 100% chance that I'll see it. If she really is the new 007 and the story will follow her, why couldn't they just a new franchise and leave Bond as is? Why do they have to hi-Jack the actual Bond franchise rather than build up a new franchise and legacy?

All the books and films have been about James Bond 007, not just about the agent number.

If the movie or movies start following her and it/they are her story/s, there is no difference between making a new character or changing Bonds character in to a female. Because Bond will be completely out of the picture. It just makes no logical sense to me if future movies are going to revolve around her.

I mean, would it be ok to make a new Tomb Raider film and have a new male lead character take over the main role?

Just read this:

'This is a Bond for the modern era who will appeal to a younger generation while sticking true to what we all expect in a Bond film,' the source added. 'There are spectacular chase sequences and fights, and Bond is still Bond but he's having to learn to deal with the world of #MeToo.'

A younger generation i.e. noisy people on Twitter! Supposedly the movie is also called Shatterhand.

You know how the saying goes: “get woke, go rich”. They’re obviously following along nicely if this story is true

"Don't go see it, you don't have to see it..."

Until all of the movie franchises defined by their leading male roles are no longer recognizable, then what's left? I rarely see new movies in theaters. I've always been excited to see a 007 James Bond movie but this is the first time I'm not excited to see a new one.

Like I said in my initial reply, Idris Elba would have been a better choice. That would have been "woke" enough for a casting choice (seeing the first black 007 who is still a man). Besides, I like him as an actor.

Oh boy, Ghostbusters, Oceans 8, Dark Phoenix and i just add Dark Fate to this list because we know its gonna be utter Dogshit:
Here we go again.
Better write the Articles now and complain how Straight, White Males who hate stronk independent Wahmen (but love Alita) have boycotted the Movie and made it a Flop.
Or just use the Captain Marvel piece and replace her name with lashana, same difference.

Fridge this character? No fucking way. She will be smarter and tougher than Bond, and will make the plot saving choice. Guaranteed!

They had the chance to embrace the "Bond as codename" mythology but then screwed it with Skyfall (and Spectre). Either they have to retcon that as personality conditioning (which would be interesting as well) or accept that James Bond is a specific person, not a cover identity.

It's super obvious that is the basic: retires, successor dies and has to come back again plot.

This is easy publicity because of the reaction.

I am not racist in the least, but God da** it... Bond, created by Ian Fleming is a man. A man... I was all for Idris Alba as bond but not this... I would boycott this in its entirety and would never see this as a long time bong fan.

Create a brand new spy movie using MI6. I don't care, but do not associate her with the 007 title.
I'd certainly be more forgiving if they had Idris Alba play bond than a women. Still seems silly though. Here's my take, what reason would there be to turn Blade into a white dude? None.

At the end of the day they can do what they want. I can understand why they'd do it. If they cast her as 006 and the lead would people really care about the movie?

Yup.

That's the biggest fear.

If A Black woman playing 007 plays the part awesome and the movie has a good plot, I think most people will see it as a good movie. No doubt, Bond has been a middle aged British guy in the secret service, so some people won't like the deviation from the norm. But put in a good movie and people will budge.

Make 007 a hip street talking Black woman with SJW dialogue thrown in like..... "I bet you didn't think a woman could be a spy right?" or "didn't see a Black spy did ya?" or "You think all spies are white guys?" any woke shit like that and the new Bond movie will be trash.

Wonder Woman wasn't a gender swap. She is her own character and a decent one at that. This is what they need to do: make new characters. If they're good, they will succeed. Simply replacing existing white male characters is not only lazy and insulting to existing fans, it sends the message that non-white/non-male characters can't succeed on their own.

I watched Casino Royale (1967) for the first time yesterday. It has many people with the codename James Bond 007. Even women. So it has happened in Bond movies before. :)

You're missing the point. Sure a 00 agent could be replaced by anyone (and that's kinda how viewers have dealt with the different actors in different eras problem of the films) but the appeal of these movies is as a male escapist fantasy. James Bond is a suave, imminently capable secret agent who always saves the day and gets the girl. That's the whole point. If you remove that element, then it's just a spy movie with the same name.

This is just easy headlines to get people to care about Craig's last film.

Call me when she's actually cast as the new Bond or even called 007 as the lead in the next films.

The various rumors and (afaik) unconfirmed whispers.

Unless you mean that you know she's 007 now and another performer is still playing the titular James Bond at the same time. I haven't considered that dynamic.

I would have actually been annoyed if they made her Bond (she wasn't great or attractive in Captain Marvel).
But, she's just playing 007 in a world where James Bond exists, and that's just fine with me.

My guess is that they're trying to set up a future with James Bond 007 series, and a second one with a female 00 agent.

To the people saying that the Box Office returns will suck. That's already been expected, and this probably a move hoping to mitigate that. Coming off of Spectre, this was definitely going to be in the older Bond range of 150-175 Domestic.

Yeah it's been confirmed, At the very start of the film she pulls James Bond out of retirement to go up against the new foe. Daniel Craig is still the main star of the film.

Lets not gender swap and make a Wonder Man movie.

Most likely a robot will replace me before a black person. Now that’s a cool idea. A robotic 007.

Can name it 00000111

I wonder if this is a prelude to a total reboot to seriously rework the concept.

Think about it. They cant kill female 007 because that would be fridging. She cant quit or retire herself at the end because that means a woman cant hack it. She cant really NEED Bond because that would make her weak. So either she is ordered to get him against her own desire or Bond just has a very specific piece of info and that is it (since Blofeld is back this is my guess).

So at the end we will have a female 007 AND Bond. Will she change her number so a new actor can play 007 Bond next? Will the series continue with female 007? Or will they reboot everything with a young first time Bond? They cant really do the "Bond as cover ID" unless they (re)introduce the idea with the next film (and just erase all the prior Bonds) but even then, there is this female 007 running around.

Its messy from any angle.
