Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2013 (May 27 - Jun 02)

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yeah, Wii U is having problems with sell-throughs right now. Not because of Rabbids Land, but because of titles like Revelations and G&W.

Such a slow thread this week, due to non-interesting events and the whole Xbone disaster, as well as E3 hype.

MH4's Comgnet rise is CRAZY: preorders over there started on June 5th, and here's its pace in the first four days

I know that neither you, nor the publishers, nor the retailers were expecting any of these games to sell much more than what they shipped - so I'm not sure what the point of the comparison is between your game 1 and game 2 scenarios.

If publishers were expecting to sell so little and the specific games passed the test we should see continued support from them and not "abandon the ship" (I'm not referring only to Japan, Wii U was a disaster worldwide for almost every third party game).

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
We know more or less what Nintendo has up its sleeves for the second half of the year, what is supposed to change the current situation?

Big exclusive games from third parties won't come, most of them aren't interested on the system and it will be mainly some ports and multiplatforms from specific companies.

Wii U really had many opportunities to prove itself as of yet. Nintendo, many big western and some Japanese companies were on board at launch.

I mean, if we assume that 3D Mario is out this year, you are looking at a 3 month or so period where we see Wii Fit U, Wii U Party, Wind Waker, 3D Mario, and quite possibly Mario Kart....that is a pretty packed last quarter.

If you assume the Wii ___ series still means anything anyway which I don't. Still Zelda, 3D Mario, and Mario Kart is a good lineup but I still have some doubts all 3 will hit this year.

If they can just nail a good price drop with software drops, that could see a nice rise. Beforehand, they should be marketing the shit out of the fall/winter games to build hype.

I foresee a good holiday, but 2014 onwards is a big question mark.

Nice how the GAF Average is close to the real numbers.

Most of us, myself included, were expecting the price cut to have a bigger influence on Vita sales, which unfortunately didn't really happen. And Tomodachi Collection was a bigger hit than most of us expected.

But good numbers, GAF! :)

Sorry for the tardiness. =P

Everyone should know that low sales numbers are bad. Wouldn't the issue with sellthrough be that price has to drop further to clear the remaining stock?
Of course, Wii U has both problems right now, but I'd figure that publishers are more concerned with volume, retailers with profit margin.

20.000 shipment, 5.000 sold, 15.000 unsold. Next shipment = 10.000, 2.000 sold, 8.000 unsold... next? No shipment and the Wii U out of the shelves on some stores (just like the Vita). If you don't see that as a dangerous trend, then I don't know what to tell you.

That's (bolded) the result of a system having shitty hardware and software sales. That has nothing to do with whether or not a game sells through 10k or 15k of its shipment. Even if these 3rd-party games were selling 80% of their shipments in the first few weeks, they're still shit sales.

Again - let's say all these games with 20k shipments sell 16k through week 3, instead of 8k or 10k. Is that really the difference between Capcom, Ubisoft, Activision, Namco Bandai, Tecmo Koei pulling their support or not?

"Hey guys, retailers only sold through 10k copies of our game in the 1st month - abandon ship."

or

"Hey guys, retailers sold through 16k copies of our game in the 1st month - woo hoo! Nice sell-through! Here's a train that we want to keep riding!"

The shipments are so small to begin with that the sell-through percentage is damn near meaningless on these titles.

If publishers were expecting to sell so little and the specific games passed the test we should see continued support from them and not "abandon the ship" (I'm not referring only to Japan, Wii U was a disaster worldwide for almost every third party game).

Again - I'm not debating the validity of anything that you've said. You're right - the vast majority of these WiiU games that ship 20-30k have had miserable sell-through percentages. I'm just questioning the meaningfulness of that information. To me - that info is pretty worthless.

As I pointed out above - if all of these same games had good sell-thrus instead of lousy sell-thrus, does anything change? No. Are publishers now rushing to reaffirm their support for the platform because they sold-thru 16k instead of 10k? Is that really the difference maker for the platform?

These are games that are shipping ~20-25k, mostly from big publishers. And that's been the bulk of WiiU's lineup for a good stretch of time now. That's the problem. Not whether these games that ship 20k actually sell 16k or 10k of the shipment.

That's all I'm saying. There are a million problems with the WiiU right now that need addressing - and the sell-thru percentages of these games with pitifully small shipments is like #87 on the list of WiiU issues worth discussing.

When (although at this rate, it may never happen - ha ha) the WiiU has a 3rd-party game that ships 200k, and only sells 120k in the first 3 weeks - then by all means, go to town pointing out the bomba status of the game. That will be significant. These games that nobody cares enough to buy anyway selling 10k vs. 20k just isn't significant.

As for your comments about publishers abandoning the ship - was anyone really on the ship? These late ports aren't support. It's throwing Nintendo a bone, because Nintendo came around asking for support, and the publishers didn't want to bother. So they said, here - have a couple late ports, that'll shut them up.

EA's really the only one outright abandoning the ship, and we heard stuff that they were dropping WiiU versions of a bunch of their games before the system even launched. But yeah - the WiiU looks like it's going to be Nintendo carrying the system by itself. But that has nothing to do with whether these throwaway titles have sell-thrus of 10k instead of 15k.

I'm guessing Japan will get neither PS4 nor XBONE this year...

*too busy playing pokemon and monster hunter to care*

Will be interesting how well PS4 does in Japan with almost no competition. Wii U sales look terrible and xbone isn't even launching there as far as we know (not like it will sell any units anyway).

Yep. Vita and WiiU are a no (games) show and PS4/XBone a no (hardware) show this year.

3DS is going to set records.

PS4 launching next year on Japan will be a better line up of game would be a good idea.

TGS is where it is.

they need to hit with the games

Mario Kart 8 launching in Spring 2014, that's a huge blow for Wii U.

I had very low expectations for this direct but somehow it didn't meet neither them. What a disaster, the system has been literally gamecubed (with N64 third party support). Nintendo has completely lost the ball.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Japan is almost like other parts of the world, right? Then:

Pikmin 3 and Super Luigi U - July
Wonderful 101 - August
Wii Party U - "later this year"
Wii Fit U - "this Winter"
WWHD - October
DKCR2 - November
3D World - December

First party wise, it doesn't seem low profile at all, actually. Granted, having MK8 would have helped a lot. And even more granted, they need to cut the price in Japan (5,000 Yen) in order to see a possibly long-standing effect.

Yep. Vita and WiiU are a no (games) show and PS4/XBone a no (hardware) show this year.

3DS is going to set records.

Look, I am not going to defend the content of what Nintendo announced, in terms of creativity and ambition- but equating Wii U's lineup for Japan to Vita is just disingenuous. There is really no comparison there.

E3 honestly was a disaster for the Wii U sales wise. Why would they think releasing 3D World this year instead of Mario Kart was a good idea? More importantly why the hell is Donkey Kong releasing 1 month before Mario. Do they not see the huge overlap in customers there? Its even worse than NSMB2 and NSMBU coming out the same year because at least there was a 3 month separation. 3rd parties have officially abandoned Wii U and I hope we don't get a goalpost moving wait for _______ post. I had really low expectations for what Nintendo's holiday plans were and they surpassed even the lowest one. Luckily for Nintendo Sony decided to not even launch this year so the 3DS will just kill everything instead.

If you're looking at third-party only, there's probably a decent case to make that they're about equal in meaningfulness, if not quantity, but overall lineup is better for Wii U, since it has a semi-supporting first-party behind it. Just making the comparison, at all, is ridiculous, though. It's like cheering for being the 49th ranked state in education in the U.S., because you aren't the 50th.

Did not think Wii U could've been worse from third-parties than Wii. It couldn't even start to legitimately form as an reasonable opinion in my head pre-launch. The architecture was supposed to make everything so much easier to port (and maybe it does). Third-parties were supposed to be avenue-starved so they'd want as wide a distribution as possible on their games to recoup costs (maybe they are, but they still aren't willing to port). Just don't know what to say. smh

It's legitimately baffling. Square Enix (who is now porting Directors Cut to other consoles),Capcom, and Square pretty much are acting like the system didn't exist. And boy I'll wait for NPD sales thread for a more expanded version to talk about western developers but I have never seen a console so thoroughly treated like trash by the entire industry. Nintendo is pretty much on their own.

The games the Wii U has coming should do pretty decent. I don;t think there really is all that much competition outside of Pokemon, Mario Party, and Lightning Returns. DK and Mario coming out so close to each other will be interesting but the fact that they come out in November and December makes it seem a bit safer to me.

I'm still curious as to whether there will be a price drop before the holidays.

Between July 15th and the end of the 2002 GC had these releases:

- Super Mario Sunshine
- PSO 1&2
- Starfox Adventures
- Eternal Darkness
- Mario Party 4
- Resident Evil 0
- The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

And some other third party games such as: Super Monkey Ball 2, One Piece and Momotaru Dentsetsu 11.

The console sold 620k units in that period of time. And it had had a 20% pricecut one month before the release of Sunshine.

When/If Pikmin and Super Luigi U get released and start selling WiiU I will change my opinion about the announced software not greatly affecting the hardware sales. Until now this year is looking like a repeat of Gamecube '03. It wasn't meant to be taken literally but that's why I put WiiU and Vita together.

That's fine, but that is completely different from what you originally posted.

Personally I think Nintendo needs a price cut to really get any traction.

Where was this confirmed?

I was seeing everyone else talk about it, so assumed it would be true. But the lack of a Yen price last night seemed weird if they are launching this year

Nintendo will never price drop to 20k yen. The Wii is still 20k yen!!! They also have the 3DS XL at it. Price is not the issue at all in Japan

I imagine that will be a TGS announcement.

My expectation is that it will launch in Oct/Nov in US/EU and December in Japan.

Did Sony announce yen pricing for the PS3/PSV/PSP etc at E3 in the past out of curiosity?

They 100% need to cut for the west, basic being recalled so a $350 wiiu will get murdered between ps4 $399 and 360 for $199 . I dont see them cutting in the west and not cut in japan.

I don't think Vita or WiiU have the software to change their momentum (I explained why I think WiiU doesn't have it in my previous post) and PS4/XBone have no hardware to sell. So it is going to be a lonely place at the very high top for the 3DS.

I should have quoted Road because I was commenting his post.

They've done this many times most notably with the DS and then the Wii never getting a 2nd price drop

Not everything has to be black or white. I'm not saying that having a high sellthrough = more games, but having a low sellthrough is equal to less games for sure. And less games it's bad for the console, don't you agree?

Had a nice chat yesterday with a very good friend of mine about the Nintendo Direct and whatnot... and I was dumbfounded about what I was being told :|

I'm not going to tell anything concrete but I was left with the impression (this is speculation on my part) that Nintendo is not in Panic Mode or even something similar. So expect polished/no rushed games... but in 2014 and a Christmas with Mario 3D World, Wii Fit, Wii Party... and no big third party games.

Seriously, dumbfounded.
