Impressive results, and there's an onslaught of games 'till the end of the year. Almost as if content sells hardware.

EDIT: not really surprised Splatoon 3 is kinda flat. They haven't brought enough to make it fresh and the new additions just feel the same, they should really amp up the events.

Nintendo Co. hit a new high for first-quarter profit after the successful launch of its latest Legend of Zelda game propped up flagging sales of its Switch console.

The Kyoto-based company reported operating profit of ¥185.44 billion ($1.3 billion), surpassing analyst estimates and its previous April-June quarterly high of ¥144.7 billion, set in 2020. Sales were ¥461.34 billion, significantly up from the year-earlier result of ¥307.5 billion

TOTK 18 million in less than 3 months it tooks BOTW 3 years

Nintendos GTA
TotK was made possible by BotW being such a great foundation and I mean it from an IP revamp perspective: this is how you do it, this is how you enable super strong sequels. You almost never can just launch the TotK games right away, you build them, you first launch the TotK and then expand them with a good sequel! One-Two 🤛!

Extraordinary. What a comeback from those WiiU days.

But. At this point, it’s pretty much sealed that Switch is not going to beat PS2. Its successor is behind the corner, allegedly and logically, and TOTK is the system’s swan song. No game is going to move 25 million Switches more, unless the console gets discounted to impulse buy prices, which isn’t happening. It’s no secret that PS2 lasted that long and moved so many units because of a cheaper slim revision which got heavy discounts, and PS360 being so expensive at launch (oh, and piracy too). If anything, these last generations saw console revisions getting more expensive, not less. And no 8th gen console ever officially dropped below $200, iirc.

This detracts nothing from Nintendo’s phenomenal success. Here’s hoping that this would teach the market at large a lesson, but sadly, it won’t. The power race has gone too far now to slow down.

Congrats to Nintendo, those are something else numbers for TOTK.

Good to see the Installbase forum has come to life again with this report.

Power race was needed to makes games better and gives developers more tools to show their vision. I do think we are a point with current consoles that developers should have everything they need to create the vision they want though and we no longer need to focus on graphics anymore because of diminishing returns.

130 million already. Damn, this thing will beat the PS2 LTD for sure.

Also, 18 million ToTK in 3 months what the fuck!?
Don't see it beating the PS2 unless Nintendo stretches it for another 2-3 years. The Switch successor might make the Switch completely obsolete as I assume there will be a form of backwards compatibility. If such is the case, then it's not like with the transition from PS2 to PS3 which saw Sony still release exclusive PS2 titles for a number of years and as I recall, not every PS3 was backwards compatible. If the Switch's successor is backwards compatible, then there will be absolutely no reason to get a Switch, especially given how bad games run on it.

That and Nintendo won't sell the Switch at $99 for like 5 years of its time on the market.

Apparently Mario Kart 8 is sitting at 64M total (i.e. when including the WiiU version) now.

What a juggernaut of a game.
It destroyed any credibility in data presented through pie charts, too.

That XSS thread that’s so hot right now tells a different story, though. As do the ludicrous sizes of AAA games released in the last few years. Incredible to think that some of these people were content with playing Street Fighter II on a Genesis with 3 buttons, eh?

Am I reading this correctly? They made 1.3 billion in profits alone during one quarter? Because hot damn if so.
Even if I'm wrong, it's still great number of devices sold, especially for a machine this old. They should hit 140 million Switches sold by the end of the fiscal year, which is quite a lot more than I even anticipated this device selling.

Couple of thoughts:
  • Zelda having the 1st and 3rd best selling first party titles of the quarter is pretty crazy. Seems like the trend of newer games lifitng older games in the franchise is not limited to Japan
  • Speaking of Japan, Famitu's reports about weirdly high Switch hardware sales this quarter were correct
  • Nintendo said that the people picking up TOTK week 1 were primarily BOTW players, but after that more and more buyers were people who never played the BOTW
  • The Mario movie did indeed result in several Mario games being up YoY
  • Advance Wars didn't cross 1 million this quarter, but I hope it does so this year
  • On their upcoming titles list, they literally write "Princesss Peach will star as the main character in a brand new games (temp.)"

Good to see the Installbase forum has come to life again with this report.
What do you base this on?

Switch sales are the most impressive ever by a console. More impressive than the PS2, since Switch has never had an official price cut, doesn't have the major secondary function of being a DVD player to bolster sales, and isn't as cheaply made as the PS2 to have resales from broken consoles. Nor does Switch have as massive of third party support as PS2, no CoD or GTA. Bonkers sales.

Zelda finally has the commercial success to match its critical success, greatest franchise in gaming on top in all ways.

Crazy zelda sales only comparison is RDR2 and GTA5.

RDR2 23 million in 2 months.

GTA5 still in a league of it's own with 29 million in 6 weeks.

Although saying that has outsold Hogwarts Legacy yet🤔.Interesting to see how that plays out the rest of the year.

Because RDR2/GTA5/HL also came out on a single platform.

Very impressive sales for TotK and Switch. I don't think Nintendo or their games have ever been this popular. They created a monster that serves as a great foundation for the future. They have the world at their feet right now.

Yeah the console isn't as cheaply made... the controllers are.

God Damn.

and New Super Mario Bros. U selling that well is really well for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, I expect that to hit 20m easily
Hopefully it will outsell Spider-Man 2 :p
How wouldn't it outsell Spider-Man 2? PS5 has about 90M fewer systems than the switch.

The real question here is what will I play first. My kids like Mario, but the youngest is obsessed with Spider-Man.
