Polygon - Tomb Raider’s grisly death animations are outdated.

Have Polygon also blogged about that The Last of Us II trailer where the girl got her arm broken by a hammer? Because the author should've been disturbed by that as well, then.

I'm kind of surprised to see that this article is written by Mark Brown. I usually find myself in agreement with his Youtube videos. But not in the case of this article.

When I saw the author’s name I went ahead and read it. He’s not making the point most here are assuming. The sexism angle appears, near the end, but its mostly about whether the animations suit the design (why is dying in combat so tame compared to dying from a missed jump?) and what other alternatives there might be.

(Not opposed to site-banning Polygon as a general principle though)

Polygon won't be happy until games are just 10 hour real time cutscenes with a couple button presses. Terrible site.

I never started, they've been terrible from the jump.

I disagree. Their features section had some really unique pieces. In depth interviews with devs, ACTUAL historical research, slice of life articles, and their videos were slickly produced.

And then “the agenda” started to take over. Couldn’t go on their front page without seeing at least two liberal articles on sexism, racism, homophobia, gender issues- *blech*!

And then I made the grave mistake of complaining about trigger warnings on some their articles... PERMABANNED.

But, it DID start off good.

Can we ban links to polygon? Or ban the word polygon outright ?

Nah, it serves a good purpose that we can actually air our opinions about them now on here without the fear of their buddies banning people like they do at other places.

They should be called out for their garbage articles by actual gamers.

They sure did, lol.

I like the new reboot series and the grizzly deaths motivate you to play better.

Pretty lame how biased people are trying to come out of the wood work to bash the laresr entry cause it dared to release near Spider-Man.

Going to suck when TR is rebooted again and given a jolly fortnite kid friendly makeover. I'm not interested in that

What does this have to do with anything?

Is this a wild fanboy conspiracy theory as to why this article exists? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sony exclusives are exempt from criticism

The same Polygon that publishes corrupt game reviews (Gone Home) employed a future serial killer (Gies), and other perverts (Robinson). Not another Polygon right? I mean from the moral stance, I was confused for a moment.

Still a p big fan of that 2013 death animation where her face gets impaled by that large stick and then she’s clawing at it in this frantic twitchy motion to try and pull it out. It was so fucking over the top lol

2013 TR is still awesome and the best one out of the new trilogy.

There's a really douchey way many clique-y California based game journalist use the word "outdated." This headline exemplifies it. It's simply taken for granted that the writers perspective is the one true path to progress in the medium. That their aesthetic taste alone should be catered to moving forward. That's progress: whatever I want.

Most people who are decent, and emotionally secure enough to accept their natural hair color, realize that their taste alone shouldn't dictate the direction of an entire medium. It's not even something they want. If they don't like very violent games they're happy to turn their focus to more PG-Rated products. Imagine the ego, the douchery, the rarefied myopia you'd need to think otherwise.

At this point I think they are just trolling.

Gory death scenes are integral to gaming. We've been cheering on character deaths for decades, with Mortal Kombat's fatalities reaching epic .levels of mainstream attention. But hey, let's hyper focus on a single game and force a square idea into a round hole in hopes someone thinks our broken narrative is 'woke.

Intentionally dying in certain parts of games to see what happens is literally part of some people's gaming experience. But hey, it's only okay if the protag is male, right?

I like gory games and films. Imagine that.

I feel weird agreeing with Polygon, but I've been saying this since the last TR. The torture porn is just out of place and weird at this point.

These journalists and social media complain about everything. First games are too sexy. Tone it down, we are uncomfortable with attractive females and want plain women. Games are now all of a sudden too violent. If the violence is toned down, next they will complain about lack of diversity, then character development, then voice actors not matching the characters personalities and then we need more animal representation.

Game developers gave outrage sites like Polygon an inch, and Polygon takes a mile to be offended.

First it was about the boobs, then it was about Lara saviour white woman, now its about her death animation.

What's next? Lara is white?

The crazy part is, it seems like sex and violence are perfectly acceptable in other forms of entertainment, but video games are where everyone draws the line. Sex and violence is a dime a dozen in horror movies for example, but a slightly revealing outfit is considered sexualizing females even though these famous icons and stars wear even more revealing clothes in real life and no one bats an eyelid.

Violence and gore has been part of videogames since its inception. Avoid the game if it disturbs you so much.

Is Polygon this desperate to be relevant?

It's almost like they forgot that Crystal Dynamics removed all the sexy outfits and dramatically toned down the amount of shooting in favor of exploration in this iteration of the game.

I feel like I've seen an article just like this on every site I've deleted from my bookmarks. I thought this was an old thread bumped.

I thought the deaths were silly and over the top. =p Kind of like a lighter version of the deaths in Mortal Kombat games. The only thing I could see giving them problems is if they start feeling repetitive after a while.

I really hate this selective thought police, somehow other games that are far worse are overlooked like ...

Yes i still remember the most impactant death that i saw in any videogame... Dead Space 2

I Mean is ESRB Mature like the other titles so actually the people are warning of Graphic violence. I dont see the point of the article.

Despite being a little squeamish, I actually liked the death scenes in Tomb Raider 2013. I felt it gave me an extra incentive to not die and added tension to areas where I thought I might die.

It's a bit of a strange article. Half of it is a good analysis of the way death is handled in games, whereas the other half is the usual feminist stuff. Since this is a Polygon article, I wonder if they made the author emphasis the feminist aspect more than he otherwise would have liked. It's strange that he says "Yikes" in alarm when the one of the developers says that gamers might be a little more protective of the protagonist due to her being female, but then later says seems to get very protective of her himself for precisely that reason "yes, these grisly death scenes are especially weird because Lara Croft is a woman."

That said, much like the article itself, Polygon actually has some really good content mixed up with the obvious political agenda. Their oral histories of Street Fighter II and Panzer Dragoon Saga are especially worth a look. I'd definitely recommend taking a look at the author Mark Brown's youtube channel as well, as he often has some good stuff on there.

This very forum helped Polygon rise by talking about them endlessly when they launched...

Meanwhile, I know half a dozen real hardcore sites that never get linked on here.

You sleep in the bed you made.

Well the people who did it are mostly on different forum today :)

And if there's anything interesting that You think is good for discussion then post it by all means :D

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I submit Exhibit #3721 on “Why Modern Video Games Press is Shit”.

In addition to yelling at readers, these people also feel the need to preach to them about the evils of gaming and perhaps use their bully pulpits to convince the industry that it needs less sex and violence in its offerings. Imagine Jack Thompson without the legal experience and you have the modern gaming press— which is funny, given that the gaming press and Jack Thompson used to be on opposite sides once upon a time.

I don’t give gaming press sites views anymore. I use other sources for getting news, like message boards and social media. It’s been sad to watch gaming press degrade to the pile of crap that it’s become, but in a time where clicks and controversy far outweigh quality of content, this is the unfortunate result: Shit like this.

I am not one that feels the need for gruesome death animations but I like them cause I am so sick of lazy ass ragdolls. Anybody remember various SNES/PS1/ARCADE game over screens in the 90s? These tomb raider deaths remind me of those. I think it's cool to show the player consequence of failure.

Edit: Oh, I also find it funny this comes up now cause based on what I remember from the first two games, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is seriously toned down on the deaths.
