PS5 Pro Set To Launch Alongside Regular PS5

According to respected Japanese journalist Zenji Nishikawa, Sony is apparently set to release a more enhanced PS5 Pro alongside a ‘standard’ PS5 SKU this holiday season. As usual, buckets of salt should be at the ready, but Nishikawa for his part has been proven right in the past on rumors regarding the Switch Lite and the leaked technical specifications of the PS4 Pro prior to its launch.

As it turns out, Nishikawa originally reported this back in September 2019, but it has only been brought to light now thanks to a post by VFXVeteran, a verified user on NeoGAF who stated the following (with Nishikawa verified as the source of this rumor via Reddit):

PlayStation Season 5, you heard it first here. Go make a podcast about it.

Have you ever actually bought a new phone outright? Most people get them through a two year contract. Always have always will.
I haven't done it for my last... I don't know, 10 phones. I don't see why I should pay 30 to 50 percent extra with a contract. In fact, the phone I have now was preordered before launch.

People pay over 1000€ for a phone and lately also for a gpu. So why not 600€ for the "best" console? Times have changed.

Because it's much easier to convince people to pay extra for a "better" version of something they have already decided they need than it is to get them to buy something that's perceived as being completely optional.

You can see the same principle at work with cars - people will spend an additional 10-15k on options they don't really need because they have already convinced themselves that the car is an essential purchase.

Kind of hard to summon up that mindset with a clearly nonessential toy like a games console.

Do contracts actually cost more still? My contract is split into 2 sections, the first being my airtime and the second being an interest free credit plan for my phone. Once the phone is paid for then that section gets removed and my contract cost gets reduced.

I think most people are already convinced that they buy a console. The only question now is from witch brand and how much they are willing to spend. Maybe the main problem with PS4 pro and so on was that they released so late in the cycle that most people already had a console and didn't bother to upgrade. If you offer the option outright you have the chance to sell more of those higher margin consoles.

That probably varies a lot between countries, phone brands, etc. It's easy to check, multiply the monthly installment times 24 and check the retail price.

I pay about 15 EUR a month for a contract with unlimited everything. Taking a neat phone would raise it to about 50 so no, thanks.

Sony has been already very transparent numerous times in many interviews that they believe in a single, strong system, and that the PS4 Pro was a one-time move because of immediate need to jump into 4K, while there wasn't any new hardware on the horizon yet that would allow them to create a completely new/next-gen system.

People pay over 1000€ for a phone and lately also for a gpu. So why not 600€ for the "best" console? Times have changed.

Because consoles are not phones. You mix two completely different markets that have nothing to do with each other. People spend like a million or two during their entire life for food alone, so a petty 600-800$ on a gaming console shouldn't be an issue going by your logic.

Nonsense.

If the games won't be optimized for the better version of the console, I don't care about it. You can keep your $600 system at that point.

Since when is what MS is doing a smart thing to do?

did anyone say it’s smart? Sony HAS to do it, if Microsoft does it, otherwise they will fail miserably.

just think about the following scenario:

$499 - xbox Series X: most powerful console
$399 - PS5: Medium power
$299 - Xbox Series X: cheapest console, medium power

Then Microsoft has the most powerful console AND the cheapest

why would anyone buy the PS5 then?

people who want the most power for Multiplatform games buy series X

people who want to pay the least will buy Xbox series S

PS5 maybe in a couple of years, when there are enough exclusive games, but this will not happen at launch. Will take a couple of years, 2022 or 2023 at the earliest.

On One hand, a weaker console puts the brake on real next gen games, on the other hand i'm just happy that sony has a beast console like microsoft.

Didn't Gaf said that launching two SKUs "if true" is suicide?
HAVE DARE YOU TO HOLD THE GAMEZZ BACK.

The share the same CPU and probably enough VRAM for the resolution which this console targets, it's really not going to held anything back.

Who is behind it makes no difference, it was a bad idea when MS was rumored to be doing it, and it's a bad idea now.

Why even have a new gen if your baseline only advances by a half-step? For those with a Pro/X who were frustrated by it being held back by baseline hardware or the lack of meaninful support of pro features, how are you going to like it when they're limited for an entire gen?

Disappointing if true.

While I agree that would put Sony in a pickle, I think you underestimate brand loyalty. Sony has a long history of delivering great games and customers won't forget that. No matter what, Sony will sell shittons of the PS5.

Same reason Xbox didn't go under with the Xbox One. Brand loyalty kept it alive then.

Merely wanting something doesn't make it an essential purchase.

If someone is making a purchase they consider essential and the price is higher than they want to pay then they will generally either look for a cheaper option or may just pay the higher price. If something is NOT considered and essential purchase and the price is too high there is very good chance they will just walk away and not buy anything.

I'm pretty sure that creating a game from scratch with a 6tf console is very different compared to creating the same game with a 12tf machine, there is some holding back i think.

Sony really needs to get control of the message. These leaks and rumours are like a wildfire which ultimately may lead to disappointment if the reality fails to meet expectations driven by the internet chat.

I mean, resolution play a huge role in bandwidth requirements and computational power, here is example:

Additionaly the resolution of effect is not bound to resolution of whole product, you probably experienced blocky shadows, etc. So you saw that in action. That means that certain effect could be downscaled on weaker cards just by changing the config.

And if we look at this picture, which is how die in 2080Ti looks like:
967256-turing-versus-pascal-schema-cipu-653x367.jpg

So RT cores is not bound to the Compute cores, that is why people cry that 1ST get RTX is a scam, because the computational side of thing does not improve that much in first series of nVidia RTX cards due to, not that much big of a leap in computational power of the card, thus it's not that much more powerfull in games without RTX. But the die is gigantic on 2080Ti (or any Turin card for that matter) in comparison to Pascal/previous architectures (due to added specialised cores like a Tensor cores for deep learning and HPC, but their speed is measure with TOPS, which stand for teraOperation).

We don't know if 4TF version of the card is going to have less RT cores. RT cores are not in the computational cluster in GPU and it cannot be measure with TF. Raytracing would suffer on weaker, if it would be software solution. We have confirmation, that it's not the case.

Main problem is CPU, because if that sucks, than you are limited of what you can do and to an extend amount of RAM and bangwidth (for alpha effect, but than again they could run on half the resolution or any resolution unbound to resolution of the picture).

I hope this explains your concerns.

But yes, it's more work, but most often it's just tweaking the config.
