WayForward and Atari Metroidvania ‘Yars Rising’ Reveals New Gameplay Trailer

Via Noisy Pixel

Atari and WayForward have revealed a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming stealth-based metroidvania Yars Rising.

Yars Rising has players control protagonist Emi Kimura, a hacker hired by an unknown entity to infiltrate the Qotech corporation. Emi’s able to jump, blast, and stealth past enemies, with her powers revealing the more you progress. Augments and biohacks will grant passage to previously inaccessible areas.

This metroidvania also features hacking minigames that pay homage to the original Yars Revenge on the Atari 2600. Other gameplay mechanics feature fight scenes and turn-based battles.

WayForward Director James Montagna said the following:
“With Yars Rising, we set out to honor one of Atari’s most enduring franchises, while creating some new rules and breaking old ones, just like Yars’ Revenge did. We’re delighted to unveil the first look at gameplay, introducing fans to Emi and teasing what’s in store when it releases later this year.”

Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari, said the following:
“Since the day I joined Atari, creating a new Yars game has been a dream of mine. I’m thrilled that we had the opportunity to collaborate with WayForward, one of my favorite studios, on this ambitious project. The new story that Wayforward has created for Yars Rising is going to excite fans and introduce a new generation to the Yars universe through WayForward’s unique creative lens.”

Yars Rising will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in late 2024. The first demo is part of Steam Next Fest until June 17, 2024.

This + Kangaroo were the first video games I ever bought with my own money. I picked it purely based on the cool cover art.

Weird choice to revive this IP as a animu budget Metroidvania… hope it’s good!

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I mean... it looks like a Wayforward game and sounds like a Wayforward game, so I'm in. I generally really like their stuff.

They revived Yars with the Recharged game. Yars Recharged is probably my favorite of the Recharged series of games. Makes sense to me that they would want to lean into it a bit more.

Wayforward has always made solid games but man am I getting tired of anime girl protagonist from them. Also Yars as a Metroidvania and not Adventure? Or was Adventure by Activision?

That trailer gave me seizures, how about showing more than a second of gameplay at a time before changing scene and showing something flashing? Seems kind of cool though!

Not a fan of Wayforward's art direction. It's too clean and gives me the heebie-jeebies, even if the sprites are 3D it look like the usual clean vectors.
2.5D is also my Death=Adder Nemesis.

It’s nothing against this game in particular but holy shit is metroidvania the shittiest genre of games at this point from over saturation.

A new one comes out every single fucking day on steam, and the vast majority is just mediocre.

I'm gonna call these games slo-vanias.

A game like Sense a cyberpunk ghost story or anno mutationen. Big titty protagonists who fill up a large portion of the screen. Slow movement. Aspects of adventure games. Mystery.

Wayforward really needs to do something about their art style. At the very least, add in a CRT filter or a different color palette. Their games look too clean IMO and come off as ugly to me.

Game looks cool though. Atari has been making good moves. I hope they manage to find success.

I guess it depends on what they're going for. I really love how crisp the last 2 Shantae games looked. And if you want pixel art, the River City Girls games look fucking great.

Agreed. Contra 4 was solid too and Mutant Mudds as well, I think they did that one.

DD: Neon, the New Contra, and this Yars game. That style just doesn't gel with my eyes.

I love Metroidvanias, I love Wayforward, I love cute girls, and I absolutely LOVE the music. I'm actually trying to figure out who composed the soundtrack, it's got Jake Kaufman vibes but I don't think he works with Wayforward much these days.

Yet...as I watched a quick video of someone playing the demo I find that the voice acting is just killing it for me. It sounds like they hired youtubers to voice the characters, who are trying way too hard to be over the top and expressive to the point that it gets exhausting. The dialog tries to squeeze in witty humor every other sentence and I can only roll my eyes so far.

Please tag me in this thread if you find out who composed the song used in this trailer. I've tried looking it up but haven't found anything conclusive, and it's driving me nuts because I also love the music they used in this trailer, lol.

So from what I gather, it looks like a combination of:
  • Tommy Pedrini, who has worked on other WayForward games like Vitamin Connection
  • milkyPRISM, a vocalist/artist
  • TORIENA, another vocalist/artist
  • Moe Shop, a famous youtuber who puts out incredible future funk/house style music
I knew I heard that signature Snails House/Moe Shop style of music in the trailer and sure enough, Moe Shop is contributing to the soundtrack ha ha.

This guy has a few videos uploaded of the OST, and it sounds like the music in the trailer is an edited version of the songs ONLINE and HOLOGRAPHIC, but then I can't find a song title for the second half vocal version of the trailer.

Thanks a bunch! Really appreciate the effort you put into finding more info on the OST. Hopefully they will also upload the track with the second half vocal version from the trailer because that one was dope too.

This one is a banger as well 😳

Can't wait until they release the full soundtrack on streaming platforms!
