No, I wouldn’t agree with that.

That’s why I used the word “modern”

Fictional character can change race, but historical ones not. That would be absurd.

Ah. I thought you referring to a modern setting and not just movies made today.

Yes, it is absurd for historical characters to be race/gender swapped, yet it seems to be happening a lot recently. UK Channel 5 recently giving us a black Anne Boleyn. Netflix in Vikings Valhalla not only race swapping Jarl Haakon, but also gender swapping him as well.

Meanwhile, I can't even get a job interview for a writing job in spite of years of blogging experience.

I'm not acting like it's a 5-star novel or anything like that, but this is a comparison to someone who, implying lack of prior experience through action, accuses and antagonizes the interviewers to their faces. And on top of that, this is with the knowledge that these kind of people actually get hired by big media companies.

Sorry mate, but „blogging“ isn‘t really a good credential for writing unless you can show that what you write brings in eyes consistently through site metrics. And even then it would be an entry level job for other internet blog-like sites (polygon, IGN, etc).

Most of the people who do stuff like this don‘t get hired. The assholes that are like them that do? They hide it initially, they network, they get buddy buddy with people who are like-minded. They get an in, slowly get higher up, bring in other like-minded friends, and then we get trash heaps like modern day Obsidian that create crap like Outer Worlds. Its all a massive incest-ual shitshow.

Blog writing is not a worthy credential to get a serious writing job mate. Take on other projects to build your portfolio.

I agree. Anyone can blog really. Doesn't mean they are bad at content, but just a million people out there do online content.

My buddy used to have a game site he ran. Did everything himself from getting the sit up, paying or it, reviews, previews, etc.... Content was fine, but not surprisingly sparse as it was an after dinner activity for laughs. He might get one piece out per day. I'd put it as no different than the million other noname sites. But just because he has a site doesn't mean he's a journalist. If he'd classify as a blogger so be it, but even if he churned out 10x the content, he'd be no reporter for IGN.

The writer is being an assumptive, accusatory asshole. How is it okay to call others you just met "homophobic"? I see no good evidence for that.

If you don't see that, then you can get out of here with your heterophobic, ableist, racist take.

It's not ok.

But with modern day cancel culture and weird left leaning people spewing it out like it's normal, it doesn't get scrutinized as much as let's say calling someone an asshole to their face because calling someone racist or homophobe etc... are very white knightish saviour of the world terms.

So even if they are idiots for trying to pound the ground with it, society gives them an extra chain on the lease because their intentions are moral.

You didn't know? LGBT people can't enjoy any game prior to the 2000s. They just recently got to play Super Mario Bros 2 because of the Birdo trans rumor. Mario 3 was almost approved because of the Tanuki Furries community before PETA got involved.

But it's all about people's personal lives and politics extending to work! On one hand, people hate working OT and employers shouldn't pressure their workers to be on a leash for that 1% chance the boss sends an email after dinner. But it's 2022, so it's ok if people's wacky home life spreads to the office so everyone knows about it 100% of the time!

Bosses can only be great if they are accommodating!

That's simply not true. Many great bosses aren't accommodating at all -- They are clear, decisive and don't waste people's time.

It's no good being accommodating when that affects the crew around you. Personally, I would much rather work with crew who didn't bring their home life into work.
I find it unprofessional, annoying and a huge waste of time and resources. There is a serious lack discipline in some workplaces and that should not be encouraged.

Yeah I changed companies not so long ago and it's pretty surreal. At my old workplace everyone used to talk about everything. It was pretty open but I suppose it also gave rise to rumors and gossiping etc. My new workplace is very to-the-point no-nonsense.

I know that my teammates are married and/or have kids (simply because they say "stepping out to pick up my kids" etc. etc. but other than there is no personal life talk whatsoever. At first I thought it was too cold and sterile but actually I appreciate it because there's very little idle chit chat. I used to think idle chat was just normal but ....... nah.

I love banter personally but it has to be there to keep the spirits up. Dragging people into your personal business is a big warning sign to me.

I'm freelance and I've worked in a lot of places. The ones who foster a "friendly" image are almost always the ones that stab you in the back first and are usually the most childish and unstable.
I found it's mainly just a tactic to stop you prying into the actual business. Keep the workers infantalised and they won't care what the boss is up to --

The bonding experience should happen around the work not the workers, anything else is self interest I think, and people who pull too hard / demand attention should be let loose --- As for someone who accuses someone else of racism in an interview, they should be escorted from the building for being uncouth.

That doesn’t make any sense.
But it does.

Knowing what do you like to fuck is such a tertiary info that doesn't define jack shit in a character unless you are such a sad person where the only strong trait you have is letting know people who you like to fuck...

This is why 99% of good written straight character in videogames are not defined by their sexual preferences.

Long story short. The studio I'm working with on a project needed to bring in a writer to help flesh out the story and the lore of the universe they created which centers around 5 main characters. So when the writer came in for an interview and was brief on the story, he asked are there any LGBTQ characters in there. He was told no there isn't and he said well would you mind changing one of the characters to be gay or lesbian. He was told sorry but the characters already have background stories and they didn't want to change it. So the guy gets upset and said sorry but I can't work here if you aren't willing to make the project LGBTQ friendly and said they were being homophobic. Mind you, there are three LGBTQ staff members in the team.

I can understand he doesn't want to work on the story because of his preference but to label them homophobic gets my blood boiling. I had to bite my tongue.
I'm gay and I can't see how anyone would think a project is homophobic just because a character isn't gay, there are plenty of times in life where nobody around you is gay lol. You are better off not having someone like that work on a project, too much ego going around in game development/entertainment these days, people taking the need for twitter cred way too seriously and feeling like they are far more important to the world than they are.

Which is the major fallacy of the wokes version of diversity. A lot of movie and video games characters already represent most people in the way they look and talk. Minorities being the exception.. but it isn’t about representation as much as it’s about being special.. which is the exact reason lbgtq keeps adding letters on. It’s a childish game of“ im more special “ much like listening to people sitting around and trying to one up each other about “ how bad” they have it.

Yeah most characters have no romantic involvement whatsoever and that's totally fine, I don't need to know a characters sexual orientation unless it's relevant to the plot.

I don't get why LGB need any other letters, if you are confused or curious chances are you are one of those three letters and Trans and gay aren't the same thing at all so they shouldn't be grouped together in the first place IMO.

It's okay little snowflake, bad writer can't hurt you, they aren't part of your studio, sadly you can't boast about having 4 LGBTQ members now, but you could still make up stuff about people who can't post their side of the story for some gaf cred. Bit your tongue but not your typing fingers, lol, smh.

You just work with a studio on one project (going by your own words here, Idk if you'll try to change your importance) but you're part of the hiring interviews and/or privy to such information cos there aren't HR departments and who cares about confidentiality, smh, more believable next time pls.

As a gay gamer who lurks more than participates, I had to break my silence to say: please make it stop. This topic was clearly intended to start a thread bashing "woke" culture (as was this same person's thread in August 2021 about female character design). This discussion lacks any nuance, compassion, or maturity, and it is, to be quite frank, dumb. It has devolved to the point where we now have someone not in the queer community offering their opinion of what letters should make up LGBTQ+ and trying to divide gay, lesbian, and bi individuals from their trans brothers and sisters. All I have to say to that is -- seriously fuck off. Lock this thread. It's click-bait nonsense and reveals the worst parts of gaming culture.

Exactly. Unless a game or movie plot involves sexuality in some form where some people hook up, most media has nothing to with it. JUst because there is a man and woman on screen doesn't mean they are a straight couple ready to date. Anyone can imagine in their head if they are straight, gay, bi or whatever.

Problem is only the LBTGQ community insists that characters should include their sexuality in games. And the only way to do it is to show it. Since most games have nothing to do involving a straight or non-straight person, thats why it always feels jammed in.

Just to show how silly it is, theres a shit load more religious people in the world than LBTGQ people. When was the last time you heard someone complain the plot doesn't have enough Sunday church or whatever activities anyone's religion involves. I've never seen it. I'm sure writers could find a way to jam in that character Mike O'Brien is Catholic and Lee Wong is Buddhist, but you never hear people care about that.

Here I am playing ES games taking a male Argonian. I use this character because they got some QoL perks like swimming. Who knew some gamers out there would be pent up needing character creation menu to say he's gay or straight.

Just think what you want. It's not like the character is going on a sex binge or getting married. In my head, he's a straight lizardman. If someone else wants to think he's a gay dude go ahead. Bethesda shouldnt need to force in LTBGQ plot lines just to show the world Argonians arent straight.

Just think what you want and stop needing to be spoonfed content.

I'll tell you what this thread lacks too:

Legit reasons on why creators should change what they wanna create following orders of other people who think they are special enough to make that demand.

Sure, pertaining to the lgtb community makes your life harder in some aspects. That doesnt give you any right to interfere in others work. Wanna get more represwntation? Create something yourself.

Let’s say they did add an LGBT character. Now they have to be concerned with how that character represents LGBT people, or face the criticism of GLAAD and other organizations calling them out for a damaging portrayal.

Not always, but sometimes it can force walking on egg shells in a way. Better not make the only gay person a villain, for example. Better make gay relationships look as strong or stronger than straight relationships. There’s nothing wrong with a prime portrayal, except when it’s forced.

OK, so hire queer people for the writers' room. And people of color. And women. Let them be part of the idea-generating process and discussion.

How about instead of attempting to shut down every little thing that upsets you, you simply move on. People can discuss things if they wish in a free society and those who wish to not participate can choose to not do so, at least that's how it USED to be, until the very people who make up a large part of YOUR community tried to change the rules and censor anything and everything that might offend them in the slightest. Go complain on your personal twitter account how this very thread is literally murdering people people and allowing people to not live their lives or some bs, you know, the normal approach for these types of situations for your people when they can't get their way.

So maybe the answer is don't have damaging portrayals of queer people in gaming? Hire queer people for your writers' room who can provide checks and balances when a bunch of non-queer people try to take a queer character in a damaging direction.

Your argument about diversity is bothersome to me. You're basically saying, "Diversity is too hard so we really shouldn't even bother. What if it goes wrong?" You fear the hypothetical that you don't even try. I know someone (a gay man) who won't hire gay people because he fears a Me Too-claim. That same person didn't hire what he viewed as a very qualified black woman because he feared if something went wrong he wouldn't be able to fire her. Both are totally fucked positions to take (and speak more about him than gay or black/female candidates). Diversity is more than just putting x diverse person in a game/film/TV show or hiring y diverse person for a certain position. The next step is making sure the environment that character/employee exists in is safe for them and respectful of their views so that shit doesn't actually go wrong.

Sorry, but you don’t get to dictate what is discussed. I’m sorry it upsets you, but no one owes you their silence. People are fed up with toxic woke culture infecting every part of our culture. Had the guy not called people homophobic and demanded his way, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

It’s an important conversion to have, and no one here is going to walk on egg shells. If someone is making homophobic remarks, they should and I’m sure will get banned. So far I haven’t seen that.

If you are referring to me I am gay and I said that trans and gay are different and they are that's a fact, I have nothing in common with someone who feels they were born the wrong gender. I'm happy to be a man, I have no desire to be anything other than a man, that doesn't mean I think that I'm superior in any way it's just that what makes me different from heterosexuals is totally different than what makes a trans person different, many of them claim to be heterosexual.

It's stupid to put people who are attracted to/love people of the same gender in the same group with people who feel that they were born in the wrong body, tell me what makes us the same? nothing. One isn't better or worse we are just different and don't belong in the same group, it's sad that we all still have to be categorized like this to begin with but it's also sad that there are people like this writer who think the most important thing about a person is their sexuality or sexual identity. When I first meet a person I don't say "nice to meet you, I'm gay and my name is...." I don't think my sexual orientation is what defines who I am as a person and it doesn't need to be the first thing a person I meet knows about me.

Most games don't tell you a thing about the characters love life and it's stupid to think that that needs to be forced into a story that otherwise would have ignored it.

Never argued for damaging portrayals. But to have your hands tied and be extra careful anytime an LGBT person is being put in your game is neither honest, nor allowing for creative freedom. Let’s say you have a gay friend you want to draw from for a character in your game. You may have to think twice about being authentic to that person if any of their traits could be considered a stereotype.

It’s becoming about activism when you want a team of LGBT people to be hired to approve your work.
