The last two years (2012 and 2013) were strong years. 2013 especially, which was fucking loaded. This year was really weak by comparison, weakest since 2011 (The Artist).

Movies hit us more deeply when they deal with what is relevant in our lives. The films that deal with the issues of filmmaking itself or acting get extra points because the members of the industry understand what is like in one way or another more easily than, for instance, what is like to be a physicist, and spy, or a soldier, etc.

thanks man, makes sense

Terrible example there...

Why? That movie is still well regarded and remembered. Even on neogaf there is an LTTP or RTTP thread that comes up about it and There Will Be Blood every few months. Better film than all the others since - not that I am saying that all the other best picture winners have been bad.

Regardless, people shouldn't get so upset about the Oscar winners. I doubt we could even pick a single movie from the last 20 years that a majority of gaffers would agree on should have won for that year, so why do people continue to be bothered when the voters vote differently than their own opinions?

What did that piece of crap win?

Best Animated. A fitting award for the most genuinely fun superhero movie since Avengers. It's light-hearted, exciting, and tells a great emotional narrative that works for all ages. Not to mention the great visual design, clever motifs, and stellar cast. It's a love letter to the mythos of superheroes.

It's not the best Animated film of the year, but I'm very happy it won.

Oh. I see now.

Have you seen "Mean Girls"? Think the Burn Book. The movie isn't actually about the Burn Book, but it plays a significant role in the development and furtherance of the plot. And without it, much of the latter half of the movie wouldn't exist.

First tragedy, then farce.
Holy shit there are actually a sizeable number of people here who hated Birdman?!

I thought it was an absolute masterpiece in character study, acting, directing and editing. I would say it absolutely deserves best picture, but I can't, because I haven't seen most of the other best pic noms.

But it was brilliant. Forgotten in a month?! Get out of here. Probably the best movie to win an Oscar since No Country For Old Men.

Character Study? The characters are 1 dimensional. None of them are believable, and every scene is a 30 second screaming match about how nothing has meaning at all.

It's the sort of confusing messagless meandering thing that high college kids will ramble on about for the next 6 months about being deep and meaningful without anyone actually being able to tell you what it was about.

It also served as a way for a bunch of hollywood actors who have starred in big budget movies to take a giant dump on bid budget movies.

I would have left the theater halfway through the stupid mans No Exit, except I wanted to suffer through it so that anyone who posited the opinion that the movie had anything redeeming about it couldn't hold over me that I hadn't finished the movie.

Which means I got to see the marvelous scene where he shoots his beak off. because SYMBOLISM. Do you get it? He shot his BEAK off!

To clarify: it was a weak year for Academy Awards. The year in general was REALLY fucking strong, I thought. 2014 had a TON of good movies.

My biggest gripe about Boyhood is that I found the central character pretty boring and unlikable. I feel like it's a bad thing when the movie is supposed to be about him, yet Arquette and Hawke's characters are so much more interesting and better acted. Whenever those two were off screen I thought the movie was pretty mediocre.
And stuff like the drunk dad arc just felt so uninspired. It never felt like I was really seeing this kid go through life. Rather just a series of random scenes where he happened to be older as they went on.
I feel like Louis CK's episodes of Louie that tackles a similar subject were more effective than this 3 hour movie.

Birdman's biggest problem is it's complete and utter trainwreck of a screenplay. Literally every other line is heavy-handed thematic exposition.

And thematically, it's a very poor man's version of Inside Llewyn Davis, if Inside Llewyn Davis had no balls.

And I say that as someone who generally enjoyed Birdman (even if I'm firmly in the Boyhood camp).

I like NCFOM, But imo There Will Be Blood was quite possibly the best movie of 2000-2009 and it was CRIMINAL that it lost.

I didn't think HTTYD2 was all that good. Wasn't bad, but I thought it wasn't nearly as good as the first one. I'd put Big Hero 6 over it.

I'd have liked it more if the mom wasn't such a terrible mother or if Hiccup didn't conveniently not care she was such a terrible mother.

I disagree. I think this was the best year since No Country for Old Men Year.

2012 was The Artist. 2011 was King's Speech, which was arguably worse.

I'm going by the year the films were released, not the ceremonies.

The Social Network is an all-timer, any time you got a heavyweight like that, it's not a weak year.

I felt Birdman was super on-the-nose. It was explicit and doesn't ask the questions that I look at. It gave stance and pomp and told us these people are about conviction and then had them do the expected before they made a decision that didn't make sense. It felt overwritten and forced. Calculated to a fault.

Great performances though.

I love some of his other films.

I........ couldn't disagree more. I don't think it was confusing in the slightest and the characters were certainly not one-dimensional.

But your angry dismissal of this film is so severe I don't even know how any kind of discussion could be worthwhile. So I'll just say I couldn't disagree more.

People mad because American Sniper didn't win.

Redmayne did an incredible job in Theory, so I'm not disappointed that Keaton didn't win.

American Sniper even being nominated is a joke. If people in the Academy were actually being honest with themselves, both "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "Edge of Tomorrow," summer action blockbusters, were leagues better in quality.

And I thought it was about a washed up actor slowing going crazy. The whole movie is playing out in Keaton's head. Seems quite easy to follow... Maybe that is just me though.

Just so everyone knows, any person who wins the DGA (Director's Guild of America) awards is automatically guaranteed the Best Director Oscar, right?

Also, we all know that some of the voting Academy members don't even work in the industry anymore

That anonymous voter a couple of pages back talking about best animated feature is cringeworthy.

What charachters?

The young alchoholic?
The old alchoholic?
The drug addict daughter?
The girlfriend?
The other girlfriend with 5 seconds of screen time who isn't pregnant?
The ex-wife who shows up twice?
The cold firlm critic?
The lawyer buddy?

I'd love to know what nuance I missed in the characters? It must have been in one of the nuanced scenes that allowed the characters to breath and really grow.. that was cut for another scene of someone smashing something and yelling a lot.

I actually agree with you and would have preferred TWBB to have won too. I just meant in my statement that I thought Birdman was the best Best Picture WINNER since NCfOM. I'm just comparing it against other winners, not the losers.

The number of best picture winners that were actually my best pictures would be few to none. For this year I adored Birdman and Grand Budapest and would have made the same comment if either of those won.

I'm not talking about the plot. I'm talking about the movies message, which is a nonsensical mess lost between all the scenes where some characters is screaming really loudly about how life is meaningless and or throwing things.

As far as comedies go, Nightcrawler was so thoroughly unambitious and tame. It set its sights low and hit the mark, I guess. Not to mention, the film itself was boring—nothing changed, despite the film clearly thinking otherwise.

Gone Girl would've been the rightful comedy nominee, replacing Sniper, Imitation Game (which is truly godawful), Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher.

Great to see Whiplash win 3 Oscars. I did not think it would win Editing. Boyhood losing that award was the nail in the coffin.

Maybe as far as BP goes. IMO, I thought Cooper was definitely worthy of a win for Best Actor. He was phenomenal (which completely surprised me)
