Yeah, the Ryzen APUs don't come out till later in the year. They are launching with their FX CPUs.

So, even if you went Ryzen, you'd need to buy a GPU.

If this were August 2017, there may be a Ryzen A8 equivalent to suggest that would blow it out of the water... but as it stands.... eh? you'd save a few bucks going current A8...

...well I just realised, since it's for a streaming machine, having a Kabylake CPU - of which the G4560 is one - would allow them to stream Netflix in 4K, if they have a TV to go with.

Anything on the horizon as far as gaming mobos?

Been saying I'm going to upgrade everything (and water cool) for over a year now, but all I've done is switched GPUs. Haven't needed anything else. Currently 2600k, Maximus Gene-Z, fast RAM and couple of Samsung SSDs. 1080 Hybrid on top.

Been waiting for some performance excuse to replace other parts and it hasn't happened so I'm moving forward in the next month or two regardless!

On the list: 7700k, another Maximus mobo unless someone has a compelling alternative, modular PSU, fast ass RAM and have a 960 EVO M.2 already. Think I will put my Hybrid 1080 towards a water 1080Ti when it's out and add water at that time.

Ryzen is literally coming out next week, so wait and see what you can get for your money.

Your GPU's performance is actually limited by its ability to dissipate energy. Modern CPU's are much more efficient. The only reason to water-cool a modern CPU is aesthetics and physical space consideration.

Does anyone use WD Red drives in their PC? I'm looking for a slower/quiet drive that will only be used for storage and can't seem to find a consensus if these are actually worth the little bit more you pay over the Blue. I sort of assume because they're marked as NAS drives they might be better quality but I'm not really basing that on anything.

I bought it and returned it. I was pretty impressed with the colors and display. VA panels are great. I just couldn't deal with the curve. I thought it could be interesting but it's really distracting unless you are sitting dead center. I'm not always sitting straight in front of my monitor so it didn't work out. Visually it was a nice monitor though.

Current Specs: i5-4690k / 8GB DDR3 Ram/ ASrock Z97M Anniversary / EVGA GTX960 Super SC / 650W XFX XTR power supply. Looking to perhaps upgrade a few parts in the near future (maybe a few months deadline for the GPU, money willing).

1) 960 was struggling a little with 1080p Dishonored 2 (not the most optimised game anyway I'm told but still), Witcher 3, and certain levels of Doom so worried that it's going to stop cutting it within next year. Money is a little tight right now, so I was wondering if there was anything that a decent-sized upgrade for around £200. Is an 8GB RX480 a good improvement?
2) Much more longterm but the CPU seems to struggle with GC/Wii/Higher Res PS2 emulation even with some overclocking, let alone CEMU or something in the future. It also starts chugging late-game in Paradox titles like Stellaris or EUIV (CK2 is noticably slower but not quite as bad). How much room is there for a better CPU while sticking with the same socket (1150)? Is it better to just wait out another few years and do a full rebuild at some point?

Maybe this is somewhat off-topic here, but I really need some help with this.

I have a Core i5 2500k that I have overclocked to (currently) 4.3GHz. The max temps while running prime 95 are at 80c exactly, but it idles in the mid 40s to 50s, which seems quite high, especially since I have a Hyper 212+. I have removed it, cleaned the old thermal paste off, and reapplied it multiple times and it doesn't seem to get any better. It's frustrating because when I reapply it and reinstall it, it slides around a bit when I try to mount the bracket and screws in because of how it goes under the heatsink. How the hell do you install this stupid thing without the heatsink sliding around on top of the CPU die?

AMD Ryzen CPUs and motherboards are now available to pre-order from your favourite retailer. The 1700, 1700X and 1800X all appear to be available on launch, with the rest coming later. Looks like official benchmarks are under NDA, but I would expect news sites to come up with previews of the motherboards in the next few days.

Old thermal paste as in the container of it is old, or the paste between the HSF and CPU is old?

As for fixed voltage, I have tried both that and offset. I have been using offset lately, but I will go back to fixed and see if it's any better.

As if the paste was old, and offset would reduce idle heat quite a lot so I think it might just be the limits of the cooler itself. My own 2500K build with a 212 only got up to 4.1 before the heat got into the 80's

The thing that made me raise an eyebrow though is that when I've googled this, lots of people report idle temps in the 30s and load temps around 50 or 60 with this same CPU and cooler. I'll try lowering the offset more, possibly reapplying the HSF again and trying my hardest not to move it when I'm putting on the mounting brackets.

I use the Red drive in my NAS. If you value your files then I think it's worth going up a notch when buying hard drives. If it's just for Steam games or something then going cheaper may be worth it. I can't compare them to Blue drives, but they are definitely better drives then your average storage drives. Mine hasn't died yet running nonstop for several years now, but I have had some external drives die.

I didn't get a CPU or GPU yet. If Ryzen is up to par I might get one. And with the 1080 Ti supposedly coming soon, everything will fall into place.

Are there any good 2560*1440 (or better yet, 2560*1600) monitors between €150-€300? Don't care about 120Hz. I'll be gaming a bit, but not too much, so IPS is definitely better, as long as the response times aren't too horrible.

So... I ordered a 1700X with the ASUS X370 mobo and a Noctua D15-S for my wife's graphic design PC.

I'll play around with it when it comes in and post my (and AMD's automatic) overclocking endeavors, along with some gaming benchmarks...

That said, I'll probably get beaten by other posters as hers will have to ship from the U.S. to ROK before I get to play with it...

So that'll still need a new bracket from Noctua, right? If so I'd order that from them ASAP. Last time I got a bracket from them it took several weeks (but to USA).

Now I need to figure out motherboards. My recent Asus experiences were very bad.. still, I am considering Hero due to the robust bunch of fans that support in ways Asus does not.

Aside from that, considering the MSI Lightning and GIgabyte Gaming 5.

It's been years since I've owned Gigabyte or MSI so I'm poking around looking for the state of affairs currently.

I have a great 60Hz IPS monitor I'd still use as main one (or for games where screen angles matter), so the curvature wouldn't bother me as much.
Thanks for the input, I think I will wait a bit for a rumored GSync version of this monitor. If only NVIDIA supported Freesync. :\

Can SSD's show signs of failing before they finally die?

I tried to start my PC this morning and it wouldn't boot from my SSD, I'd just get a black screen saying that I needed to put in bootable media and restart.

Going to the BIOS, the SSD still showed up, it just didn't work. I only now got it working again by booting the Windows Boot Manager for the SSD. It ran the drive repair and then booted up fine, but it took doing that 3-4 times before it suddenly worked. I honestly thought it dies completely so I already ordered a new SSD from Amazon, but if the SSD isn't at fault then I might send it back (save me $170 I wasn't planning on spending this month).

I've had the SSD for about 4 years (a Samsung 840 Pro), but to my knowledge when an SSD goes bad it just dies completely and doesn't have issues like this, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for this. Their current setup actually has DDR3 memory so I could even reuse that, making it even cheaper. I assumed any new CPU i buy now would use a mobo with DDR4.

Although, is there another cheap mobo for this CPU that is not microATX? I wouldn't mind an extra expansion slot just in case. Or even HDMI out so I can get rid of their GPU

Hey guys.

I am a bit confused here. On a PC I have that I didn't build it has a corsair h115i. I noticed with the corsair link I cant control the speed of the fans. I looked into it further and it looks like the original fans are replaced with different corsair ones, these are 3 pin.

Is this why I can control it via the software?
do I need 4 pins to do this?
what are my options to adjust fan speed on the 3 pin?

when I run CPU Z it says DRAM frequency is 1066 Mhz. I assume this is wrong? what speed should it be running at ? 1600? is this something I change in the bios?

Yes 4pin for software.
3pin with hardware, some kind of switch etc to have low/med/high speeds etc

Honestly you could just overclock the cpu that you have and keep on trucking for a bit longer, as neither of those games is very demanding on a cpu. Displaying 1080p videos also isn't demanding. If you do have the itch to upgrade however then you would get considerably more cpu power, but overclocking is free provided you have a decent cooler already. Also consider if there are any upcoming games that you want to play this year that would be more cpu-intensive and may be worth upgrading for.

Your RAM is currently running at its base speed of 2133 Mhz. (CPU-Z and other programs report the speed as half what you think it should be, because it's DDR RAM. 1066x2=2133.) You'll need to hit the BIOS to pop it up to 1600/3200, the BIOS should have some sort of XMP profile in the Memory section which will take care of it.

Ryzen just came out so that's unclear, plus also it depends on what you define as 'beastly'. Z270's allow for overclocking of mainstream intel CPU's, running from i3's to i7's. But the likes of say, an i7-6900k, you'd be looking at something like an X99 motherboard.

Meanwhile, while I say Ryzen has made things unclear, by that I mean its high end CPUs, while not yet fully benchmarked, look very promising while undercutting intel on price. However, that stuff is also largely excessive for gaming purposes, so it may more sense to stick with, again, stuff that would fit on a Z270 motherboard.

So yeah, what would you be looking to do with this? What kind of GPU and CPU would you be pairing it with?

2 SSDs and a HDD

So, nothing extremely valuable in there by today's standards, but it'd suck to have to replace it all if it gets fried. Anyone have a suggestion for a new modular PSU based on what I have in there? Ideally, I'd want something that'd allow me to upgrade within a couple of years, but I never will go beyond a single GPU, so my thought is that a good 500-600w PSU would be plenty for my needs. I think a pre-emptive PSU upgrade might be a good plan for me here since my old one is 7 years+ now and isn't exactly an amazing brand anyway.

Is a Corsair CX650M PSU for $45 (after rebate + buying from my local Microcenter) decent? Reviews seem solid. I'm just so out of touch with parts manufacturers these days that I'm not sure if Corsair is a reliable brand for PSUs.

would i be stupid to drop £550 on an R7 1700X/Asus Prime X370 Pro if i'm just playing games? i currently have a 6700K at 4.5GHz. also i'm only playing at 1080/1440p 60fps.

part of me is saying just to keep my current PC until it starts struggling (i7-6700K/16/1070) but these new ryzen cpu's look promising and i love new stuff :)

So I've decided that I'm giving up on the 4K dream until a single GPU solution for 4k/60FPS no compromises comes out.

With that said, does anyone have any recommended 1080p, 144hz 1ms monitors?

This one is a very popular model, been out for a while though.

Check out the AOC and Acer models as well. I only have personal experience with the Ben Q, so can't comment on those.

Edit: also, on the BenQ you can select the model without the useless Switch thing and save $70. Might be affordable for you without that. All it does is make it easier to scroll through the settings and switch profiles. Waste of $$.

So I have an i7 4820k, running at 3.9 ghz, 32gigs of RAM, 1080 strix. Any reason to upgrade my chip and mobo? I'm mainly gaming on it, playing WoW, Witcher, Overwatch and things like Fallout 4 and Dishonored 2.

mainly for gaming purposes .

I would be pairing it up with my current 980 ti and i 7 3770 ( which may also get replaced )
