Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Patch Tomorrow - Fixes XSX Screen Tearing, Adds Next-Gen 30fps Quality Mode

Yeah I'm with you but having options is always good. PS5 version is the best performing AC to date on consoles, next one will be 30 fps most likely.

Massive amount of input lag, PC version is unplayable to me with it, VRR (GS) is the only option. This is strange that almost all PS5 and XSX games so far have screen tearing, most last gen games were vsynced, masive screen tearing reminds me PS360 games.
It seems that they are only adding vsync to Xbox, no mention of PS5. It will be interesting to see a performance comparison then.

I'm just wondering, what if MS gave devs a big incentive to patch and rework the engine with optimizations for XSX ? The comparison wouldn't make sense any more unless PS5 receive the same treatment. Thoughts ?
There's no incentives from the platform holders.

More like the devs finally releasing their day one patches.

I remember when they downgraded the graphics in AC Origins on the Pro to get better performance.

I really hope that doesnt happen here after the scathing digital foundry analysis. I wouldnt be surprised if they lock down to 1440p and 60 fps instead of the dynamic resolution they have now.

i held off on playing this and now im regretting it because this might actually get worse.

There's not much next-gen graphically to Valhalla, I played it maxed out at both 1080p & 4K at 60 fps, and the 60 fps is what made the biggest difference. The level of granularity between settings is very low - as is tradition with AC, and there's an advantage to running lower res in that the smoothing over of the res through TAA reprojection means it's less obvious when you have super-sharp clear detail near the character and then the 15 kb jpegs that masquerade as far off LODs in the distance, which is especially egregious on plains or when you're in the boat and FOV widens. Plus AC has higher input lag generally so being able to reduce that helps the feel of the game tremendously.

I really would not recommend quality mode to anyone because the game simply doesn't have the graphical chops where the sacrifice of 60 fps is worth it.

I had a little screen tearing on the Xbox One base console and then very little on Series X, until I turned on VRR. Variable Refresh Rate. I think only some TV's have it but I read that that helps, so I turned it on and haven't seen any since. I have a LG Nanocell 86 FYI. Nothing fancy (pretty cheap at $799).

That's the entire point of VRR. It eliminates tearing when you're between 40 and 120 FPS.

these seem pretty big changes for how late they are, i stopped playing since i got my PS5 but this will make me jump back on it for sure, hope tearing is pretty much gone on Series X.

i wonder how much better quality mode looks

$500 on a gpu to upgrade the computer you already have, would do so much more than a next gen console.

Not completely fair to compare like that.

Owning a gaming pc isnt universal thing and what it did initially cost should be added to the equation, so it is not just 500 for new gpu, it is 500+rest of the pc. I could claim that my PS5 cost only 180€, "I sold my pro + games and stuff for 350€ so new ps5 costs 180€" but it would be as wrong

It should be from zero, so new console or whole new PC including OS + keyboard+mouse (TV or Monitor is needed for both also, and some kind of desk + chair for pc probably, but lets not include those)

Of course in reality there are people with modern enough desktop PC that can be updated by GPU only, but that is not universal thing as many dont have desktop at all or it is too old.

And PC people always brag how their version have 144-360fps and super ultra details, so point of gaming pc vs console is that, which means that from zero it costs 1500-2500€ to build high end system that makes games different enough vs consoles. And under 800€ it is usually better to get console for gaming only related stuff.

But there are always rich & spoiled people whom have lost the touch to reality who say things like "why dont you just ask your parents to buy new car/apartment/whatever" if someone says they cant afford it. :messenger_grimmacing_

I don't get these comments, game is phenomenal looking and pure eye candy at times. Some people just cannot be impressed.
There are some places where vegetation LOD is really jarring because grass texture is different color than grass and whole patches of ground in front of you turn darker when you get close. I also had some really low resolution rocks, but that could be bug.

I hope the map is fixed on PC, it does not reveal anything with explorers for example.

Any word on a PC patch? Game is unplayable at the moment, for me. Entire game freezes after 20 or 30 minutes.

Edit: nevermind. In the patch details:

  • PC: ~4.3 GB @ 1pm CET | 7am EDT | 4am PDT | 11pm AEDT

lod and draw distance is not the worst i've seen with open world dispaying this kind of scale and draw distance....it's even one of the best
yes lod transition are sometime really weird and noticeable (but in comparison to pop in, it's a lesser evil)

Get it on ps5. The patch for performance enhancement is for xsx and s . Not ps5.

It can look nice. But it can also look like this:

Notice the vegetation missing after x meters. Shadows are gone. It's just a blurry texture for the entire landscape.

This on PC. Maxxed out.

and now i imagine how bad other open world would be if there were a senu equivalent in them.

You can get a free camera mod for RDR2. I can find you some screenshots of that if you like but it's a bit pointless.

Even the colour choices/grading in Valhalla are weird as fuck. That screenshot I posted wouldn't be so bad if the fucking lighting made any sort of sense.

lighting and weather is dynamic you can choose 10 other combinaisons where it's not as bad why focus on this one ?

Still havent buy the game because I hate how the camera zoom out during combat . I mean the camera in Origins is perfect , Odyssey is a bit zoom out but bearable . This game almost became a top down arpg wtf .

No immersive at all . In some boss fight the camera is great though .That some weird design decision .

Because it's weird as shit? It's a low contrast/flat look a lot of the time, with either a yellow, blue or green push, which appears to be location specific, when combined with the time of day lighting can create some weird and unnatural combinations. Almost all of the time the lighting + grade looks unnatural, combine that with some bad and uneven landscape graphics can create some really fucking horrendous screenshots.

Anyone who opts for this over 60fps is absolutely insane. Why even bother with a "fidelity" mode if it objectively makes the game feel worse.

Reply to this post if you are currently playing Demons Souls at 30fps so we can all throw our heads back in laughter.

Yep. Looks good now. Do you know what causes the tearing and what does VRR really do to eliminate it?

Tearing happens when the frame rate of a game doesn't match the refresh rate of the screen. What that means is you get partially rendered frames displayed on top of fully rendered frames and that causes the tearing effect.

VRR makes the refresh rate of a screen as variable as the frame rate of a game and ties both together, which eliminates screen tearing.

Probably I'm the only person who prize nicer graphic higher res at 30 fps than 60 FPS. Though I thought AC already used the higher setting possible on console?
