Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Patch Tomorrow - Fixes XSX Screen Tearing, Adds Next-Gen 30fps Quality Mode

I’m not sure because MS is helping the Dirt 5 devs too but the new patch only list improves in PS5 performance.

The fact Ms is having to help devs feels a lot like PS4/XB1 and show the capabilities of each hardware.

I believe it will be fine... devs are trying to reach parity making Series X catch PS5 but you can just go until some point due the bigger PS5 hardware potential.
Youre delusional as hell.

Game seems to look better on PC after the patch. But.....5 minutes into the game after patch and the game freezes. Really glad I only paid $15 for Ubisoft+ for this crap.

Very unscientific but had a play about on Series X and it still looks to be adaptive V-Sync as I did get it to tear one frame while spinning the camera wildly while jumping off a church. Before though it was tearing like mad.

If it is adaptive V-Sync then the torch no longer seems to make it drop 10fps as there was no tearing no matter what I did while running around with the torch out.

Only had a really quick go so YMMV.

Thanks for the impressions mate.

ANyone else?

Its hard to describe but the visuals have taken a hit and there is now a lot of judder. Its not great, maybe the hardwarw just cant handle a game like this at 60fps? One of the aspects that amazed me was surfaces, textures and how highly detailed distant buildings were, and they have all taken a hit unless I'm seeing things lol

You might be seeing things. But we'll wait for DF, NX or VGTech

I want to know how low the resolution drop on the XSS to accommodate 60fps.

It's already barely above 1080p with lower graphical quality just to achieve 30fps, and even thennit drops.

Will this be the second XSS game to end up having to go down to sub HD to be able to keep up with the XSX, basically?

By design should go to half of XSX and PS5 resolution so 720p in worse case scenario. That's probably why default setting is 30fps.

torch no longer seems to make it drop 10fps as there was no tearing no matter what I did while running around with the torch out.
Did you tried it when it's used as light source? Night or indoors? That's scenario when fps dropped with torch (and dropped way more than 10fps).

Yep it was night and I ran around whatever town I was in (not one of the biggest ones to be fair) then inside and underneath a church and no visible frame drops and no tearing. Maybe this isn't the case everywhere as I only played for around 10min over lunch.

What I can say is 10min pre-patch would have resulted in 100s or even 1000s of torn frames and I only saw one the whole time.

Not saying it is fixed but certainly massively improved.

Didn't compare to 30fps mode and didn't notice it was less sharp but I think I would need a side by side to tell as it's not like AC had perfect image quality anyhow.

Judder? Looks like they switched from adaptive Vsync to full Vsync and slightly more aggressive scaling of the resolution.

EDIT: I guess adaptive Vsync is still there based on some reports.

I tested a cave with a torch in my hand and it ran flawlessly.
in those scenes it would literally go below the freesync threshold of my TV, so it was below 45fps before.

now it runs smoothly and no stutters that I could see.

seems to fix this weird issue. also 4K mode looks pristine not gonna lie, but performance mode is way nicer still.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Looks great on the x, didn’t boot it up before but no screen tearing so far.

best of all it carried over my pc save!

I tried the 30fps mode on the X 🤮

If you've played the game of 60fps you can't go to 30, I did see one bit of frame tearing on the X but that was just as I loaded Inna span the camera nothing so far yet.

The most important thing is that it's back in quick resume so I can swap between this and origins at will.

a little less but the tearing is still present on X/S

framerate drops too, the view distance seems to be reduced to maintain 60fps

and visually it is slightly less detailed

Played another 10-15min on Series X and you can definitely get it to tear a frame or two if you go crazy spinning the camera while using the bird or jumping off stuff which makes me think it is still adaptive v-sync and which also suggests its running at 60fps 99% of time now which bodes well.

I can't really remember what the IQ was like before so no clue if it is a lower res but whatever they have done has made it far better to play.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.

This option is available for Xbox Series X|S & PlayStation®5.
  • Choosing Performance allows the game to adapt the resolution and graphic settings to maintain 60 FPS.
  • Choosing Quality enables the game to run maximum resolution and graphic settings while maintaining 30 FPS.
  • Default values since the launch of the game are as follows:
  • Xbox Series X / PlayStation®5: Performance
  • Xbox Series S: Quality
Performance and Stability

  • Improved stability and performance.
  • (Xbox Series) Improved experience on Xbox Series S | X consoles including screen tearing
  • (PC) Addressed a VRAM/RAM leakage issue when alt tabbing to desktop.
I'd LOVE to see hard data of how many opt for Performance vs. Quality.

I am hoping that it's a landslide win for Performance and developers are incentivized to push more for 60 fps minimum and allow it to be unlocked for gamers with HDMI 2.1

Everyone wins!

The default option is the vastly more used.
Most gamers doesn't chance settings.

I don't change them unless it forces you to choose when starting a new game (like Easy/Normal/Hard).
I play always like devs though I should play unless there is some issues happening that needs to use another option.

I'm not a gaming tech person ....but when playing the 60FPS mode on the XSX now things do not appear as crisp and detailed. If I change to 30FPS mode it looks like it used to. Maybe a little better then it used to actually. I will have to wait to hear more opinions to see if I am just crazy or not.

reducing draw distance wouldn't make sense as the framderops mostly happened whenever the dynamic shadows of your torch were rendered.
and that happens in very small enclosed areas most of the time.

I tested that briefly and it seems to run fine now in these instances.

I run with freesync so if there were framderops and tearing while traversing the open world I didn't notice them really, as tearing gets eliminated and slight drops below 60fps get smoothed out for the most part

That means the resolution is dropping more frequently now to keep the frame-rate above 60fps. Which is a good thing.
