I already said I didn't feel anything was a stand out for 2021. I even said I wouldn't have even made a best of for graphics tech.
I don't got a choice for the GOTY but if someone asked me, I would have to think and give a answer.

But if someone asked me what the best visuals in 2021 are... Id gladly give the answer.

There is precedence for this. ND used cutscene models for the PS4 remaster of the PS3 version of the last of us. I thought it was a great way to take advantage of the extra horsepower of the PS4 GPU beyond just doing a straight 1080p 60 fps remaster. It's a shame so many of the PS5 upgrades dont do this.

More detailed high-resolution character models will be the standard throughout The Last of Us Remastered, with developers using renders previously used only in cutscenes for the game's PlayStation 3 version, creative director Neil Druckmann told Edge.

In the magazine's latest issue, as reported by CVG, cutscene-quality character models won't be restricted to cutscenes; the graphical power of the PlayStation 4 is allowing Naughty Dog to use them freely throughout the game without worrying about the game's visual fidelity. For the PS3 original, these detailed renders were used only in cutscenes, then swapped out for lower-resolution versions when transitioning back into gameplay — a trick designed to make the game's more cinematic, dramatic moments look better.

"We don't build it with high assets in mind to then port it, but it did give us a leg up," Druckmann said, explaining the PS4 is allowing developer Naughty Dog to use these higher-quality assets by default. "If we hadn't done that, we might not have made the call to bring it over to PS4."

I just hope Aloy's hero lighting becomes standard for even next gen only games like Ratchet. Movies do this. You will almost never find bad lighting on characters unless the directors wants it to be dark. Even then so many directors and cinematographers go out of their way to light at least half of the face properly.

Err, you sure about that? The guy adressed NXgamer's post and gave his technical opinion and why he thinks the fur is not all that ( I think R&C deserves the accolades) and yet at least 3 people engage him with jokes and offsite accusations. The same people that used to stomp all over Xbox threads are now playing victim of the big bad VFXveteran wolf.

He talked about games in general, he didn't say a thing about being a sony game (this time) and yet people are acting like he said:"all sony games are ugly as shit"

He claims all this work he's done and how Pixar's latest CG is so much better than Ratchet and Clank and blah blah, while disregarding how great it looks, how far the games have come visually, and how much better they will be in the future.

He's just all "well it's not as good as X so it's crap" and cites some shit nobody truly cares about because we're just trying to enjoy and appreciate what we currently have available, today.

He's lying or contradicting himself, he already said it was Metro Exodus.
Best Graphics Technology for me for 2021 is by far Metro Exodus's pure RT implementation. R&C has everything going on for it with artistic direction. I'm betting that the switching of worlds can be done without the PS5's SSD. The RT reflections aren't enough to put the game in the top spot for best graphics technology.

I thought the ssd would fix that by having higher quality assets and models in memory at all times. Yes, the gpu would still have to render that higher LOD model at all times but I’d rather they do that than waste the gpu resources on rendering native 4k pixels.

I love what gg is doing with Aloys hero lighting. You are basically getting cutscene quality lighting in gameplay. I think every next Gen game needs to do this.

P.s i recall making a comparison using Ellies face while riding a horse. It looks like shit devoid of any detail. When you put her up close she looks very close to the cutscene model apart from the lighting. Nah they should use the best lod model for the main character at all times and add hero lighting. She’s the main attraction and needs to look best.

99% of people don't spin the camera around and try to see the characters face rendering in a third person action game. It would be a complete waste of precious resources.

The problem is he's using extreme hyperbole to make his claims.

Ratchet's fur is "horrendous". Like really? You can say that you've seen better and that it looks good, but saying it's extremely bad is obviously going to make people question both your comment & your "vetted" status. If he really wanted to make his point he should have countered by showing other games with more impressive fur rendering technology.

Games are always going to be doing smoke and mirror tricks to claw back as much performance as possible.

The trick is to hide it and make it seamless. LOD swaps will exists, and better memory pipeline should allow for better transitions.

You lose pixel density per object the further away it is from the camera, no need to be rendering a cgi quality model at this point - but zoom in and the top model should be instantly available and rendered within the frame budget. You don’t want to lose half your rendering time to the main character when they only take up 5% of the screen and vice versa.

To VFX's point, could it be that R&C adds fur when you toggle the photo mode even in 'game play' ?

Or is it there even during raw game play pictures too ?

I think in the end what matters is if its noticeable or not. I haven't really seen Ratchet loose a ton of fur at any given moment. Whatever LOD they are using its pretty much not noticeable.

Edit: Just an additional thought. I fail to see how a good LOD implementation can be seen as a negative.

Come on, guys. How old is Ratchet anyway? It’s clear he’s a middle age lombax by now. This is all bald-shaming. Before you know it, he’ll be showing up with a ridiculous combover on the next entry. No reason to provoke anxiety and make bald characters agonize about thinning hair.
