PS5 price to increase in select markets

Get ready for PS5 Pro to be

The Price Is Right GIF
This just means there's not going to be a PS5 Pro for the next 3 years at least.

2 years ago Sony announced its original price...only to increase it by 50€ 2 years later. Clearly there won't be any new models any day soon.

Where's your counter argument?
Companies will always seek to produce the amount of items that maximize their profits, or more accurately they will always price a product to maximize profits at the given supply. The fact that you made it seem like so grand conspiracy to fuck over consumers was funny I suppose. No idea why you would expect gaming to work different than other business. If people are stupid enough to waste money because of FOMO, that's on them. As a business owner of a company producing unnecessary luxury goods absolutely nobody needs (but plenty of people desire), you have an obligation to maximize profits.

it is simply a shame. They have decided to squeeze the fidelity of their users in many aspects (€80 games, $10 upgrade nextgen, etc...) and now they have made the loop by increasing the price of a console with 2 years of life always to safeguard their scheduled benefits...

...you have an obligation to maximize profits.
Sadly only short term in stock market idiocy.
Short term this will probably be good, for Sony, but the PR backlash, will hurt them long term. In a gen where your main competitor has the better hw, has a cheap second good enough option, has the day 1 also PC subscription service and should be able to compete at first party games to some extend soonish. If the market overall doesn't grow and they actually lose market share at least like in 360 era, the plan to maximize profit with this will backfire.
If MS does anything with their prices now, Sony will have to do a 180 like MS with their used games policy and Sony with closing the PS3 Vita stores... I kind of hope MS does something crazy with their prices. It would be hilarious.

This is ridiculous.
Jeez, I know inflation has been killing many industries lately but Sony passing on the costs to consumers is just a low blow. If neither Microsoft or Nintendo follow suit with similar price increases for their hardware, this will look especially bad.
Apple is doing the same thing, but yeah, you can only do it when you have a sort of monopoly or you'd eat the loss of profit and just roll with it.

If Microsoft price drops their shit this is going to be interesting.

I‘m actually more surprised by how expensive the PS4 still is – even the Slim. You‘d think after nine years you‘d be able to buy one for 150 bucks or so, but if anything they got more expensive since the launch of the PS5.

Seriously, the prices are ridiculous. On Amazon right now you can a buy a refurbished PS4 Slim for 430$. Wtf? That‘s more than the PS4‘s launch price back in 2013!

Edit: Holy shit, it gets even better. There‘s a 2TB PS4 Slim that costs 753.99$. This has to be trolling at this point lol. SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THREE US DOLLARS AND NINETY-NINE CENTS!

People are willing to pay scalpers.

Given how the average gamer has accepted your games got a 20 usd price increase, 10 percent extra on a console is not something that would bite Sony in the ass. They are the market leader, and will continue to do so.

I'm sure Sony appreciates that you think about the company and not their customers.
They will lose market share without question, the acceptance of this kind of practice from it's customers/fans is really borderline insanity.

Absolutely right.

They are selling all they can make immediately so why not make more money? I'm not defending this but what does Sony care if they anger people? They will remain loyal anyway.

Consoles are always sold at a lost until manufacturing costs go down, they make it up in Software. They are cashing in on $70 games, most people now buy digital which is full profits, and they are now also cashing in on pc 💻. With mobile games coming soon. This is a bad look

Stupid move if Microsoft don't follow suit.

Sony could greedy their way out of console dominance if they're not careful.

- The PS5 launched 2 years ago
- GPU prices are plummeting due to overstock and miners flooding the used market. Demand for TSMC's N7 will get lower in the mid term (it's also not a high-end process anymore).
- GDDR6 14Gbps is on the low-end of GPU memory nowadays and PC GPU production is being reduced, so the PS5's RAM costs less to Sony
- NAND prices are plummeting due to overstock, so the PS5's SSD is now cheaper for Sony to buy
- The packaging and distribution crisis is mostly gone, so it's probably cheaper for Sony to assemble and distribute the PS5

There's no way the PS5 is more expensive to make today than it was in 2020 or even in 2021. Sony is capitalizing on the increased cost perception created by scalpers to increase their margins. People who saw >850€ for buying the PS5 from scalpers will now be glad to pay only 550€.
At the same time we're seeing PC GPU and CPU prices plummeting so we'll be a lot closer to being able to build PCs with performance similar to a PS5 for close to $550.

My hope is that consumers will see this as what it really is, and Sony takes a beating in EU+UK+JPN sales.

1 TB storage instead of 825 GB would probably been a pretty small BOM increase. Small stuff like that could’ve made it look less greedy while effectively still achieve their goal.
This would have needed a change from the 12-channel controller down to a standard 8-channel one using higher clocks. This could probably be done, but it would require a new PCB, QA, etc. It wouldn't be a seamless transition of changing the chips.

Corporate profiteering is okay because I can explain it.

Congratulations Jim Ryan you have done it again!

How is this fool still a sony CEO? He's running it into the ground. Price rising of console, high priced games , remakes of the same game. literally relying on organic growth of gaming devs while everyone is pretty much buying decent publishers Sony just twiddling it's fingers and complaining when they could be doing the same thing.

Cmon I'm just deciding either to keep my PlayStation or sell it and get an Xbox. Personally I feel Sony is not Sony anymore and just going down hill

Can mods unban ethomaz ethomaz just this once? We need to hear him justify how's its a good thing :messenger_savoring:
I can try:

This is all the scalpers fault for inflating prices and perceived value of the PSX brand. Blame the consumers as well for paying 1000 USD for brand new PS5s on eBay. The PlayStation brand has never been stronger and Sony is using this as its platform. There’s no turning back.

I can’t take it to the part that it’s a good thing. I’m sorry I’ve failed you.

If an extra £30 on a console is such a shocker to you in the current economy, I'd suspect you don't pay for your own housing, utilities, fuel and food!
Those things are needed to live. One of them isnt..

With that in mind wouldnt you agree then that for Sony to stick another £30 on the thing you 'dont' need to live is utterly fucking stupid considering people may not have the money regardless..

Lets be honest, most people buy this shit on credit to begin with as they cant afford it outright anyway

This is another factor in thinking 'well, I dont 'really' need it...'

It's not rocket science. Sony just being Sony. Good luck to them, i'm sure they wont starve.

obviously i was joking that i had a PS5 with the "jet engine" comment. i was making fun of the people who describe their playstation as such (the PS4 was actually super quiet!). if you had snooped on all my other PS5 related posts you'd see it's clear i do not own a PS5 and don't intend to get one any time soon.

maybe find something else better to do with your time?

18%?

Fukinhell.
yup
