Jim Ryan: "[Microsoft is] a tech giant with a long history of dominating industries, the choices gamers have today will disappear"

Mate Jimbo inherited a buoyant PlayStation division. It was Kaz who took Sony out of PS3 losses.
Jimbo done fuck all except for increase game and console prices, charge for free upgrades when everywhen else does them free and make remakes a priority over new games.
Jim Ryan is good for Sony. He will make them a lot of money and shareholders like that.

For the consumer, which is what we all are and I think many here forget that, there are better choices, people more in tune with what gamers want versus what will make Sony the most money.

That really does sound like some solid propaganda..
You think it would have been financially viable to release a niche game like Deathloop (immersive sim, coming off the disappointing commercial performance of Dishonored 2 and Prey) as a next-gen only title without the financial support of a console manufacturer? Or do you want to listen to Square Enix's CEO statements on how Forspoken wouldn't have been possible without Sony's involvement and support? And what about the remake of Silent Hill 2? Arguably one of the best looking games we have on the horizon, absolutely top of the line production values, yes, but for a series that has historically been VERY far from reaching Resident Evil numbers. Do you think all that graphical spectacle manifests itself by magic? No, it does because there's a partner providing financial stability to the project - hence why SH2R would probably break even for Konami at some point, while Dead Space 2 for instance didn't for EA even after selling over 4 million copies.

Hell, and this doesn't apply to Sony's deals only, I doubt S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 for instance would have been able to look at good as it did on its showing at Microsoft's E3 2021 had it not been for the support and funding Xbox provided to the project, prior to the unfortunate circumstances that led to its indefinite delay due to the Russian-Ukranian conflict.

That's not accurate in the slightest. Re2 was planned for saturn but got canceled due to the whole game having to be remade. By the time re2 came out the saturn was dead. Despite that, the Dreamcast got ports of re 2 ,3 and code Veronica which was exclusive to the system until it died.

This whole notion of Sega being bullied out of the console space by Sony is pure fan fiction. Sega pushed themselves out with bad decisions.

Either way, Sony getting timed exclusives ( which Microsoft does as well) is hardly the same as buying two publishers.

Jim Ryan has really showed how pathetic and hypocritical Sony has become.
Sony didn't give a fuck that they were an electronics giant who did everything they could do to destroy Sega. No fucks were given then.
Then the same Sony is crying mom because now the roles are reversed.
Jim Ryan didn't mind taking content away from Xbox players at every single opportunity. They literally spent hundreds of millions of dollars to stop xbox players being able to play certain games. They stopped xbox players from being able to play Street Fighter for a whole generation.
Now the comments from Sony fanboys? Get a playstation if you want to play those games. It's a warzone and Sony is winning. Microsoft should get out of the hardware buisness. They can't compete.
Now those same fanboys are crying about Microsoft being to rich and daring to take content away from them. Karma is a bitch, bitch.

Then we had Sony and their Fanboys saying how Gamepass was going to fail, and it was no feasible, and all in all no threat to Sony.
Now Sony has shown how they really feel about Gamepass, and that is fear. Sony are literally shitting themselves over Gamepass behind closed doors.

Ryan, Sony and some of their fanboys have really embarrassed themselves during this whole situation.

There is no way anyone can convince me that Microsoft buying a gaming studio is anti-competitive. I have never owned an Xbox, and never will. There are so many developers and publishers that this just isn't a monopoly.
They’re not buying “a gaming studio.” They’re buying the largest third party publisher in the world after already buying one of the top third publishers in the world.

Clearly.

thicc_girls_are_teh_best thicc_girls_are_teh_best this is a thread for you. Plenty of tarnished Sega refugees for you to educate.
I've never heard that Sony was responsible for killing Sega until Xbox fans started spreading that narrative recently. Then it was everywhere in the Activision threads.

Sega was already dead before the PS2 even came out.

If you Google why Sega failed, Sony is barely mentioned from people in the know. Like in this article:

You seem to forget that Microsoft has been doing paid exclusives too. In fact, they damn near invented money hatting. Most of their exclusive library during the Xbox and 360 gens were rife with them. Their lack of ability to foster their own stuff is why they need to go out and buy publishers worth billions or tens of billions of dollars to not have 2 years of near-zero exclusive games.

We forgetting Rise of The Tomb Raider? What about the years of exclusive CoD map packs?

Final Fantasy doesn't sell on Xbox. Final Fantasy became the IP it is today because of PlayStation. It's also an order of magnitude smaller as an IP compared to CoD. Which sells more on PlayStation, by the way.
Terrible counter argument because it's not even the point.
A sale is still a sale.

All very unseemly. Usually you try and hide the fact that you are shitting yourself :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I’m not totally sure what they are so scared of - it doesn’t seem that big a deal to me (not talking financially obviously) but Sony certainly seem majorly rattled by it.

I'm way past the point of wanting both Jim Ryan and Phil Spencer to STFU and start delivering games and not engaging in marketing jargon and statistics. I really don't give a hoot. I don't care what deals or acquisitions you have or don't have. Just make quality software.

So far, most of the news this generation has been on everything but the actual games. I better see a bunch of non-CGI current gen trailers for these consoles at the VGAs.

I miss Shawn Layden. At least he valued games that didn't need to be blockbusters like Japan Studios.

I don't really know much about the history of Sega's demise and don't really care about Sega, but I love this post because it's hilarious.

Sony is so full of shit and I wish along with the hypocrisy on their paid exclusives and especially with keeping Japanese games off XBox they would also get called out for Crunchyroll's monopoly on anime. They pretty much have streaming monopoly on damn near anything anime and it totally gets overlook meanwhile they're crying about Call of Duty.

I don't know if you are being disingenuous with the GamePass stats because Microsoft laid out an absurd 73% growth rate year over year. It did 28% growth which is still stellar.

Curious - why is 73% absurd? And if it is indeed absurd, shouldn't Microsoft's trustworthiness get called into question if they're willing to communicate unrealistic expectations? Is 23% stellar? It's practically impossible for us to know as it really depends on their cost structure.

[Microsoft is] a tech giant with a long history of dominating industries," Ryan told the NYTimes. "It is highly likely that the choices gamers have today will disappear if this deal goes ahead."
I mean it's not like Jim is pulling this out of his ass:

Microsoft loses yet another fortune that would have bankrupted any other business during the Xbox One era but Microsoft is a tech giant and has plenty of money to burn. Influencers brag about the Microsoft war chest often enough that it becomes a meme.

Microsoft creates GamePass. This service is so funded by Microsoft that they basically gave out (and still give out) years of service for almost free. They also put first party games that in the past were $50+ into the service day one for free as well. One could also argue that Sony got a lot of bad publicity when they would not allow the same kind of stacking that Microsoft allowed.

Microsoft then brokers one of the largest publisher acquisitions in gaming history to acquire games that traditionally have been available on multiple platforms and immediately announce that future titles will be Xbox only.

After that, Microsoft brokers an even larger acquisition for one of the biggest publishers of games in the world. It is obvious that they are using their money and power as a tech giant to try and buy their way to dominance.

Microsoft can point fingers at other players in the space, but none of those players are spending close to $100 billion dollars in a few years in order to acquire publishers that have multiple popular studios under their wing.

I mean you can nitpick these things but this is basically what has been happening.

28% is still really good for sure. And the original target may have been more realistic than first glance. Possible they expected huge influence near end for original release plans. With PC and Xbox together, a huge influx could have been expected for heavy hitter.
