Fuck this hypocrite and all his fanboys.

They can't be bullying everyone with shit exclusive deals and then cry when someone does it to them.

Sign the contract for a long period of CoD availability on playstation and let Microsoft offer it in Gamepass for their users.

Some of you are going to carry that sega torch to your grave. They were not good at consoles. They got pushed out towards the edges when sony came in and had to bail after ms came in. They did better than atari, be thankful for that.
Just to correct things. Sega pulled out of hardware before Xbox was out and it had nothing to do with MS but having no money left when Sony was dominating the industry so bad that even though Dreamcast was out and awesome everybody were just waiting for the new Playstation.

Been on Gaf for years and the narrative has long been Sony dominates Microsoft. HAHAHAHA.

But now, coming off a generation where Sony outsold MS 2 to 1 and have a millions strong lead in the current gen, somehow MS isn't supposed to out up a fight.
Put up a fight? They've had years to develop the studios they've acquired and they did nothing with them. Now Microsoft are buying whole publishers to create a monopoly. That's not competing and it's certainly not beneficial to the gaming community at large.
If Sony was to buy Square Enix or Capcom, your opinion would change very quick.

Whats the difference between money hatting all the games from a publisher and buying them? I don't see a difference except one is cheap for dominant market leader. The other is a better value for the last place competitor. I have zero issues if the deal was stopped on the concession no more timed exclusive deals from major studios from sony. I would hope you sell more games having near 70% market share.

It was the great peter moore for starters but to go back 2 generations for an argument lol. Might as well go back to sony locking up the original tomb raider 4 generations ago lol. Let's not forget sony had an absolute lock on major 3rd party titles until Peter Moore did his magic to break that hold on 3rd party games.
Valid points, but I think XBOX gamers are part of the problem as well. I feel if XBOX gamers supported and purchased more games, I don’t think Sony would be able to get as many timed exclusives. Microsoft tried to procure timed exclusives like Yakuza: LAD, Octopath(?) and Rise of Tomb Raider as well. Yakuza sold a paltry 4500 or less units if I remember correctly and ROTR didn’t make money until it came to PlayStation later. I know Persona 5 is on Gamepass now, but I heard it only sold at a ratio of 4% on the Xbox or something like that.

When something like RE: Village or Mass Effect Collection has a ratio of 80/20 in favor of Sony, why is anyone surprised when certain games go timed or full exclusive to PlayStation? This has been going on for years also. Major games do come to XBOX, but the community usually doesn’t support them especially niche or Japanese games. Not saying timed exclusives are right, but things like that definitely don’t help.

Even if you moneyhat the game, at least there’s a chance it will show up on your console of choice. With an acquisition, they own that particular game, can do whatever they want with that game and you will probably never see it anywhere else because they essentially own it.

Lets be real though, CoD, Diablo, Starfield, Elder Scrolls, Etc "Free" day 1 on Gamepass does have a very solid chance of killing Playstation in the mid to long term. The critical mass of normies do not care that much about the single prestige first party game Sony releases every year or two, they'll buy the Black Friday $200 Series S and play all the big games for $10.
It won’t be 10$ for much longer. I see it going to 20$ a month soon. Maybe 15$ for a bit but 20-25$ a month in the long run. Netflix is already at 20$.

Yep. They suck at exclusives. They say things like "we need a game like Horizon." You'd think with their resources they'd come up with something better than Halo. Now they're just buying out studios with already established games. People can complain in here about Sony all they want. Their exclusives have been the prime selling point of their console for quite some time now.

Sony strong-armed Sega right out of the industry, and tried to do it to Nintendo. I don't want to hear Jimbo's whining.
This statement is ridiculous.

SEGA Of Japan was the downfall of SEGA in the console market. Watch the Console Wars 2020 documentary and you will see.

SONY was going to team up with SEGA on a new console, but SEGA of Japan couldn't agree on the specs. SEGA of America was EAGAR to do it.

Wrong it's only on Windows. When they support Mac, Open BSD, and Linux get back to me.
How is it wrong though, Windows isn’t PC?
In any case, it’s still more flexible than Sony and Nintendo. Not to mention MS also offer cloud and mobile in addition to Windows.
Sonys tactic is ... Buying mega publishers? Lol

You cant see the difference between buying the biggest publisher on earth, and securing a few exclusives here and there?

You act like Microsoft doesn't have the ability to offer MORE than whatever Sony does for exclusive games/content. And they do.

They did it with Tomb Raider. They did it with The Medium.

They just have the fucking worst taste when it comes to games.

Sony and Microsoft both monneyhatted Blooper Team.... MS did it for The Medium, Sony did it for Silent Hill 2. Thats simply one company having vision and the other just being retarded.
Silent HIll 2 remake should have been an Xbox exclusive after the studio literally just finished making an Xbox timed exclusive.

Microsoft could have made their own offers over the years and they did, but they choose irrelevant games.
It’s not like Sony hasn’t bought a big publisher in the past. But I agree with the moneyhatting, and I’m not sure if Sony has a lot better negotiators etc. but they’ve been like a leech on CoD for years and I’d say their tactics have been way more aggressive than MS. I remember reading Sony were in talks about getting StarField before MS acquisition of Bethesda.

Obviously MS felt they could not beat Sony at their own game, otherwise I think they would’ve. So they adapted and now Sony is whining because it’s the other way around.

Competition is good though. I mean Jim is crying about this while simultaneously increasing the price of the Ps5 and all their games. Some more serious competition is needed sooner rather than later imo.

Grownups in the industry would probably laugh at Ryan’s position.
One party outsold their rivals 2:1, then proceeded to start the gen with extensive paid timed exclusivity for Square JRPGs, Capcom games and Bethesda games in a bid to cripple the competition out of the gates.

Nothing in revenue, profit or hardware sales points to a picture of Microsoft dominance, let alone monopoly.

and I don't care that a company worth trillions has a hard time competing without buying everything up

Not your money being spent, is it?
You’ll also have to clarify ‘buying everything up’. the industry is way bigger than Bethesda or Activision.

this is just the beginning, they already bought bethesda removing games like Starfield from other platforms now this - the biggest third party publisher.

Stop shilling for them.
I hope it is just the beginning. Microsofts moves in the gaming industry shouldn’t be artificially limited to what Sony can also afford to do to make it fair.
If MS want to spend their money improving the xbox offering to customers, let them. If Sony can’t afford to do the same, sucks to be them. That’s capitalism.

If playstation fans don’t like it, the series S is a steal right now, feel free to join us.

Platform, singular, only one platform lost access. -lag for, that is doing this constantly with other games, but they’re are usually removing games from multiple competing platforms.

It has nothing to do with PS fans at all, you're so narrow minded.

if you want one brand to own everything driving up costs is that an ideal world for you? It's literally a reality in Canada where half the nations services shut down because one company had issues.

Stop being so naive and childish thinking stuff like this is good for you.

And how is that Sony's fault if everyone ignored the Dreamcast? Customers made their choice, like they did now with the PS4/PS5.

Too bad for MS. Make your own shit if you want customers.

One brand isn’t going to own everything, though, regardless of how much MS spends on acquiring developers and publishers.

Gaming is significantly bigger than home consoles, and Nintendo have survived just fine relying like 99% on their own first party, Sony are in a position to do the same if they wanted given the popularity of their first party games. Choice will always be there, and that will keep the costs down.

Even if it doesn’t, we’ve seen Sony putting prices up recently on the console itself, and their first party games are $70 compared to $60 for MS - if price increases were a problem when the definitive market leader does it, people would be leaving Sony in droves, yet they’re not. Something tells me it’ll be ok when MS does it as well.

I didn’t say it was Sony’s fault, I said it wasn’t Microsoft’s fault like the poster I quoted said. Dreamcast was already discontinued before the first Xbox was out, and Xbox had a rocky start as well with early price decreases and so on, so it’s not like MS stepping in was some kind of killer blow to Sega. The power of the Playstation brand, extreme PS2 hype, and having no money left was what killed off Sega’s hardware division.

The same thing could’ve happened with Xbox 360 during the PS3 launch tbh, when Kutaragi said next gen starts when they say it starts and Xbox 360 is more like Xbox 1.5 etc. Fortunately Xbox 360 became very successful, and was easier to work with and had a better price, the industry wouldn’t have been the same otherwise.

The Xbox 1.5 stuff was ridiculous, and it wasn't long after the PS3 reveal people saw how stupid that was.

There are cast iron guarantees that the biggest IP from the biggest 3rd party publisher is remaining multi-platform for a long time to come.

Seems like hypocrisy to complain about removing content for a company that paid cash to take Final Fantasy exclusive.

I’m not sure you know the meaning of the term ‘shilling’. Like I’m mandated to agree with you 😂

At least he’s put his money where his mouth is, with their accessibility controller enabling more people to play.

Microsoft have infinite money and monopoly is not good for anyone.

This may be the only industry where the party with the lowest marketshare is being accused of being a ‘monopoly’. Having a lot of money in the bank doesn’t really mean anything.

Might as well accuse Apple of monopolizing video streaming with Apple TV Plus since they’re richer than Disney and Netflix combined.

Jim is one of rare ceo who speaks plainly and we say it’s a bad thing? I am not a fan of the guy but it’s shame how easily people dump on him and eat all the sweet crap phill sells

Still amazing how Spencer annoys many of you for just speaking plainly.

TBH i don't undeastand anyone being happy about those massive consolidation in gamming industry. This is bad in the short-medium term and much worse in the long run.
I disagree, shifting of $67Billion from various MS tech industry segments to consolidate that money pile to just gaming alone equates to decades of tangible jobs and games being output for us to play.

Especially when put into the factual light that during the entire history of gaming as a medium the current era is the most diverse in terms of many factors e.g. turnover, brands, devices, geolocations, games, genres, devs, indies, tools etc etc.

Now factor in Xbox bringing meaningful competition, Ninty dominating all others and innovation/value add of Gamepass being successful and profitable already. We don't need any platforms or publishers raising prices or closing studios or avoiding risk for green lighting projects and acquisitions etc.

MS buying publishers = its just business 🤭
Sony arguing against MS buying publishers = unfair hypocrite :pie_lcry:
If you and I are both sitting in McDonald's and you eat 5 cheeseburgers and I eat 2 Big Macs do you go to the cashier and complain it's not fair that I was able to get multiple Big Macs?

McDonald's wanted to sell me the Big Macs, it doesn't matter if you eat there 5 times a week and I eat there once a month.

Your frequency of visitation makes no difference on what they are going to sell me.

I hadn't considered this.

Historically as a contractor, when that game was ready you were let go, this way they can shift you to new projects and you don't have to be an employee to have some stability in the company.

Funny cause Spotify and Netflix do argue this even tho they are the market leaders. It’s a pretty known thing. Microsoft is trying to pull the market right under Sony’s feet.

As market leader Sony could have been pushing for these initiatives. Instead they dipped thier toe in the water and noped out.

Only when they find thier back to the wall, do they actually go out of thier way to try it themselves, while complaining that others are doing it better.

Did you even read your link?
Spotify is accusing Apple of using its App Store for unfair competitive practices, but that doesn’t translate to Apple dominating video or music streaming.

Microsoft is trying to pull the market right under Sony’s feet

How exactly?

And if McDonalds bought all the meat in the country because it was on sale and as a solution to complaints offered to sell McDonalds hamburgers in a stall in Burger King restaurants, that doesn't stop the massive impact on Burger King nor their right to complain.

Nor does it make your argument that they can still sell chips and meatless burgers, or that they can come up with a competitor to hamburger meat, or that they could have bought all the meat themselves less laughable

With the purchase of destiny Sony has shown what should happen when a big multiplatform series is bought unlike Microsoft when they bought Bethesda.

Guy who's main business practice is to pay developers to not release their games on competing platforms and cornering entire gaming series and genres on "his" brand is complaining about monopolistic practices?

I thought Jimbo said that people will flock to quality content. If they will provide it (in terms of first party), what is his worry exactly?

Please. Let's not go there.
Sony did not allowed Destiny (and future Bunge IP's) to be multiplatform from the kindness of their hearts. They did it because that was condition under which Bungie was willing to sell. Nothing more, nothing less.

There was nothing like that when Bethesda was selling to Microsoft. So there is literally no reason for Microsoft to have those games on PlayStation outside maybe for Indiana Jones (contract?) or some live service stuff.

I have said this before but to me the funny part about this is people would bring up this MS warchest if MS got tired of getting bullied and those people were laughed at that MS would never spend huge money

Now those same people are sitting and crying about this warchest having been cracked open that Sony can't compete
More a Pandora's box that got opened.

Sony fans in last few years: Xbox players should demand better. That first-party output from Microsoft is pathetic. THey should invest in their studios
Microsoft *investing in their first party content by buying studios, expanding existing studios and buying Bethesda and ABK*
