The Last of Us Part II Remastered Announced + Trailer. Release Slated for January 2024

I fully expected this would be a retail priced game (like Part 1), so the $10 upgrade is very welcome news. I wouldn't have double dipped at full price, but for ten bucks? Let's go.

Cash grab...

There's no other point for this release. Is this what ND have been working on since 2020? 4 years and no new IPs from them.

EDIT: Oh, if you already have the game you can get it for a $10 upgrade? Ok, that changes everything then. I'm in! haha. Point still stands though, ND what new stuff are you woking on?

So good that doesn't even have ray tracing lol
I mean its running in native 4k/60, pushing the level of fidelity it has, Id rather this PLUS that extra content which sounds intriguing than a buzzword extra processing effect that does little to improve a already stellar looking game…

It's a last generation game. The least they could do is 4k 60 and at least one rt option.

There’s simply no way people are using a 10 dollar upgrade fee as a sticking point while fully aware fans of the series are prepared to pay full retail?

Thinking veiled hate? I mean, the up having lasting resonance and the ability to capture new audiences is the real problem for some… Once you check their receipts…

Man people in this Thread complaining about a $10 upgrade make me want to purchase the WLF version just out of spite, and God only knows how much I hated this fucking game..
All the more ridiculous considering the game received a free 60fps upgrade already.

New mode sounds great, it's going to be super fun with this game's combat and it could and imo totally should replace that resource/talent pit of Factions 2.

Lost Levels also sound interesting, was hoping for them to be integrated into the game but it's actually no big deal as my Grounded run already lasted 100 hours in the original.
Not even sure I want to replay the actual game but I'll try the new content no doubt.

This game only really needed LOD improvements to fix the 60fps Patch issues, and they apparently did that along with other minor things here and there:

A complete "Remaster" with new assets/lighting/textures would only destroy the meticulously crafted visuals/aesthetic. Game already looks like this ffs:

Loved to see a mention of improved shadows for instance, those PCSS in the Part I Remake were the most welcome improvement over Part II.
I replayed the original game numerous times, but I've ever been able to make it through the sequel the one time I played it at release.

It was such heavy going at times, and poorly paced, that, unfortunately, actually slogging through the story again is the least attractive thing about this.

They're working on TLOU Online, Neil is working on a new game (we don't know if it's a new IP or TLOU Part 3), and up until 2021 they were co-developing a new Uncharted game with Bend before Bend asked to work on their own thing. It's not unreasonable to think that they're now either working on the Uncharted game with another studio, or they've brought it fully in-house. We don't know what Shaun Escayg is working on right now, he'd be the perfect director for the new Uncharted.

If Neil is working on a new IP then we can also expect that they'll be working to get TLOU Part 3 out by the end of the gen. So at this point in time we can likely expect 3-4 new games out of them (one maybe co-developed).

Up until Jan 2024 they'll have put out 2 remasters and a remake while working on the above. Additionally there are rumors of a Jak & Daxter movie so if that does become a reality we can likely expect they'll have some gaming content to align with it be it a remaster/remake or something new. Sony likes to have gaming content to align with transmedia projects.

Read the small print. Disc owners can also upgrade for $10. The "digital only" just means you can't upgrade your PS4 disc to a PS5 disc version. You can upgrade your PS4 disc to a PS5 digital version (which still requires the PS4 disc to be inserted).

Pretty good deal then.

Cant remember people crying so much with Ghost of Tsushima PS5 fee, or Death Stranding and etc.

Even with Super Mario 3D All Stars, 3 emulated games with no extras for $60, I didnt see this reaction

But its ND, so its expected

Honestly is this all Naughty dog have been doing for the past 4 years? I absolutely LOVE the studio and TLOU franchise but couldn't they have spent all this time with Part 3, a new entry in the Uncharted series or a new IP? Already put 60 hours into TLOU2 and got the platinum, I'm already burned out on these old games give us something new.

Great that its just a £10 upgrade. I'll be honest, I would have paid more. But I'm the kind of idiot, due to FOMO, who also buys the super, duper, titanium deluxe versions of games too. I'm a fool....

Exactly what I needed in my life. Day 1 purchase for me and then I can't wait for remastered remake remix in 2026.

Screw the multiplayer and new ips. I'm glad they are focusing on what's really important.. remasters.

No, they've been working on Factions too...

I think we can all get concerned with what a studio may or may not be known to be working on. But I highly doubt a remaster like this would have had a large amount of resource placed on it. This remaster and any new fully fledged game from ND, are two different and separate things. Get mad at ND for lack of new IP etc. But I highly doubt this remaster will have impacted any of it. Time and money spent on something like the scale of Factions though.....

Lol couldn't they have done more serious outfits than astronaut? Alright alright it's for the laughs, and I guess there's plenty others.

Don't care if I'm in the minority, this is the only correct way to port a game like Part II: increase draw distance, AF, resolution, shadows and AO if needed. Don't mess with anything else, basically a PC port.

The astronaut outfit is thematically appropriate for Ellie. Her dream to go to space is brought up multiple times.

All the comparisons are pretty much from cutscenes, which is where the game has always truly excelled to the next level graphically. We'll have to wait for gameplay comparisons to see how that looks in comparison to the PS4 version. I imagine it'll bring it up roughly to the level of TLOU Part 1, which is perfect for me. Better textures, improved lighting, higher resolution... all that jazz.

It’s just one example. Games are getting free upgrades, new modes and support for new hardware all the time. All. The. Time.
wtf? just like no man’s sky , cyber punk was a unfinished mess when it came out. you do remember they removed it form the playstation store because so many people wanted refunds. the had to fix the game so that they could sell it. your revisionist history is a joke.

yep. not so many new games, but endlessly upgraded versions of already existing ones. if i could get my hands on the person who asked for this..

You wouldn't get a brand new game even 1 day sooner if these remasters/remakes weren't being made. They're working on multiple games and they'll release when they're done. These smaller projects have no bearing on causing those new games to take longer to ship. If anything these smaller projects have helped because it allows the studio to upgrade their engines to the current gen with shippable projects, it gives their devs experience working on current gen, and it gives their staff something to do in those lulls while some of their projects are spinning up in pre-production. In the past ND would lay off a bunch of people between projects and then hire folks when needed. In this case they're able to keep the vast bulk of their staff to work on these smaller projects until they're ready to be moved to the larger projects. That way they don't have to get a bunch of new developers accustomed to their tech while working on a new project. In fact, word is that TLOU Remastered was a project for the newbies at ND to get them up to speed.

These smaller projects are a net positive for everyone - the studio and the gamers, even the ones who only want brand new games.

Valve release the Giga Chad Deck Oled just because they can.

Sony releases the Soylent cheapo PS5 Slim and fisher price streaming tablet, increase base online fees and they top that off with this steaming pile.

I get the complaints over nickle and diming.

um, sorry, but where did i say that the one thing (remasters) was somehow causing the other (release delays)? i'm simply describing what's currently occurring. truth is, i'm thinking the new, extended development times are what're somewhat inspiring these updated versions of existing games, as a way to appease us while we wait for something new. now, me? as a 1080p gamer, i'm not really all that personally interested in upgrades, hence the last 'get my hands on' bit. did i prefer things as they used to be, development time wise? yes, i did. but whatcha gonna do?...

No what?

Your post implied a cause and effect relationship between the existence of these remasters/remakes and that we haven't gotten a new game yet. I provided some clarification on why they have no negative effect on the release of a new game.

ever hear the phrase 'correlation is not causation'? my post implies nothing. you read what i said, & proceeded to infer what you did all on your own...

Yeah Part 1 was basically getting it up to using TLOU2's assets at 4K high quality setting.

Part 2 is just using TLOU2's base and getting it up to 4K high quality setting.

The difference is pretty tangible. TLOU2 looked a lot softer than Part 1.
