And people, not everything should be brushed under the rug of "console warring."

Some of these comments about 1P and 3P are genuine and consistent. Please realize that those could be how other folks feel about games. Like, I was equally disappointed when Avatar was revealed as a first-person game.

Yeah, as much as I love Avatar and super hyped for this game, I was beyond pissed when I learned about it being a first-person game.

This should have been a third-person game. First-person would be perfectly fine if they were making a PS VR 2 version 👀 🔥
I am VERY excited about the Avatar game. My only hope is that it's not just Far Cry in Pandora. 1st person has dampened my hype quite a bit, but I just love this IP so much.

Star Wars too. An open-world Star Wars game?! Come on! It sounds so cool.

Now I just hope what they show isn't shit. If those 2 current-gen only games look cool and play well, and AC Mirage already has very positive vibes, this can be an excellent show.

And I still haven't bought Avatar because of that. I'd purchased it day one otherwise as I love that franchise.

That's literally what this seems to be. They said it's puzzle heavy and a lot of it is options = exploration. What more do you want? Another 3rd person mass-murderer simulator posing as an adventure game?
So instead, it's a 1st person mass murder simulator posing as an adventure game. I'm guessing we should throw in Tomb Raider as another example in 3rd person for good measure...

Yeah, that sounds stupid. In all cases.

We all know the real reason why it's first person. The studio don't have the ability to make 3rd person games. Look at those awful animations when it goes to 3rd person. He moves like a robot. That's why I'm baffled as to why machine games are developing this game. Who the heck decided that?

I’ve asked a simple question why can it not be first person. Nobody seems to be able to answer though…

People already tried to engage in this conversation with you whereupon you demonstrated that you lack the ability (or desire) to read their responses before replying anyway. So it's a waste of time. There's plenty of discussion about it in this thread already you may peruse to your heart's content.

The biggest problem this game has got - and any Indiana Jones game made by anybody would have - is that Uncharted already did the entire Indiana Jones adventure fantasy to such a high level of quality that it renders any other style of that kind of game redundant. 'Rugged heroic adventure seeks artifacts and beats up bad guys' is Uncharted's thing. Which it stole directly from Indy. But that means an Indy game is always just going to feel like a retread of Uncharted.

Frankly, if I'd been Disney, I would have had a nice chat with Crystal Dynamics and whoever the hell owns Tomb Raider these days, and made a game where you search for the same artifact as Indiana Jones and Lara Croft in different time periods. That would have at least brought something different to the table.

Yeah even Tomb Raider, which popularized this genre in gaming, struggles against Uncharted. To the point they kind of aped it with the recent trilogy.

A third person Indy game will no doubt be compared to Uncharted and come off as a less polished product because Machinegames is no Naughty Dog. Which might be ironic, but in gaming Uncharted is the de facto relic hunting action adventure series today.

Indy and TR are pretty much has beens at this point. Which is sad because I like both IP more than Uncharted, but its how it is, the last Indy movie bombed and was quite lazy. The last TR games were mid, all I look forward to right now is a compilation of the 90's trilogy.

I just hope you guys have this same reaction when Marathon shows off some gameplay. I was expecting it to be 3rd person after that trailer. Hopefully they have the ambition and the ability to try and compete.

It can be good. But it would be better if it were third person, imo.
Some of the most critically acclaimed games are 3rd person and tbh some of my favourite games are in that perspective. My question is why does it have to be 3rd person to be accepted by some?. Im assuming it comes down to personnel preference…

What do you mean why can't it be first person? The game factually is first person so obviously it "can be" first person. That doesn't mean that is the best choice for the game. kruis kruis has the best explanation for why third person would be better.

Just look at that action sequence from Uncharted 4. The exhilaration of such a moment would be impossible to recreate using 1st person perspective. A 3rd person view is the closest you can get to the feeling you're playing an interactive movie. That's what you would want from a game based on the three classic Indy movies - but you're going to get a completely different experience in a first person perspective. It's the dumbest decision ever.

But can you eat chicken nuggets while doing it that???

I understand it can differentiate itself from other 3rd person games. The first response to was met with “twisting words” and lack of imagination. Meanwhile they clutch at it must be 3rd person… my question is why… nobody seems to be able to answer that question without referencing other popular games that have saturated the market.. why not have a different perspective and take?.

Maybe I should rephrase the question. Why is the best choice 3rd person?, in regards to perspective.

Marathon, which is a shooter game?

Are you saying Indiana Jones is primarily a shooter game, and not an action-adventure game?

Ahhh I see… so are you outraged just to be outraged or what?. I am trying to converse with you while you sling insults at me yet I’m the ten year old?.

Why in your opinion does this game require a 3rd person perspective to be “better”.

So they suck so much it has to be first person. Why would Sony buy this studio if they can't even animate? Shameful.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here but Marathon is a FPS game and always has been? Of course I expect a first person game, this would be like expecting a third person Halo because the trailer showed Master Chief in armor. Uh we know it's still a FPS anyway. The mental gymnastics man

You should raise your standards. Why can't they aspire to compete with superior games? You can't keep letting studios get away with low effort like this.

Tomb Raider has a little more of a USP, as long as they return Lara to the character she's supposed to be in whatever game they make next. She works best when she's an isolated, puzzle solving explorer in an environment largely devoid of humans. Chasing the Uncharted style big action cinematic set pieces is what ruined those reboot games.

Indiana Jones doesn't have anywhere else to go though. He's just old man Nathan Drake for the target audience at this point. And that fucking awful movie won't have helped matters, either.

16 pages of 1st vs 3rd person perspective.

Jesus Christ.
I'm glad I like both!! woohoo!

I also like both. I firmly believe Zelda and Mario should be third person, and Halo and Doom should be first person.

I have standards, as indicated above. Indiana Jones is in the third person camp.

I can almost guarantee some here probably had a web chart of how they would’ve responded, depending on how the reveal went. It’s almost painfully obvious at this point.

First-person > complain about perspective and lack of cinematic moments - “WHY DID MICROSOFT GET THEM TO MAKE IT LIKE THIS?!”

Third-person > complain it’s too much like Uncharted and won’t have its own identity - “WHY DID MICROSOFT GET THEM TO MAKE IT JUST LIKE UNCHARTED?!”

If it was third-person, there would be 16 pages of other complaints, so it doesn’t even matter at this point.

Watch the trailer for Marathon, it's 3rd person the whole time. This is Bungie's chance to use the animation resources at Sony and try and finally aspire to greatness instead of the mediocrity of the first person perspective. Hopefully they don't let everyone down.

Okay so your whole argument was why can they not make a 3rd person Indy game without it being an uncharted game… right?. Conclusion was that they must lack talent?. Am I off or not?. I honestly don’t have time to peruse 20 plus replies, but I believe that’s the gist.. if I’m off I apologise..

Now my genuine question is in your opinion what will Indy lack by being first person instead of third.

Man if only half life wasn't in first person.. it could've been so well regarded otherwise

Different? Hell yea! That's a novelty in the AAA space

I'm trying to respond with cogent points but you're ignoring them and doubling down on being a sarcastic snob.

I would be even more pissed if Doom/Halo went third person than I am about Indy being first person. THIS IS NOT ABOUT ONE BEING BETTER THAN THE OTHER. It's about the right fit and gameplay style for the right game. It's like the "best controller" debate. Well my opinion is mouse and keyboard for FPS games, controller for platformers and action/adventures, and HOTAS for flight games. There is no best one! It's context-sensitive! Your sarcastic condescending "argument" relies on there being only one best perspective and that's it.
