The most important thing in this news is: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

REAL DIRECTORS ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE STAR WARS MOVIES

But will the movies still have the title crawl that prevents anyone from the Directors Guild or will they remove something that iconic? (Or has that whole thing been cleared up by now?)

What would be awesome is if Disney - owning both Henson and Lucasfilm - will pump some of those sweet Star Wars profits into a new series of "Farscape"!!!!

Thought Lucas would be worth more than that but I'm glad its Disney over studios like Fox and Warner Bros. Disney seems to take a lot of care with Marvel which I love and I bet they will do the same with Star Wars.

Star Wars land would be way better competition for Harry Potter world than Avatar, LOL.

Yup totally agree. Star Wars is a definite classic. Avatar still has ways to go.

Of course, me being greedy, I wouldn't mind both properties coming to the theme parks.

Disney got it CHEAP. The first film alone will bring in a billion dollars easily. I'm perplexed at how Lucasfilm was valued so low.

Yes, I agree they got it cheap. But it's still a 4 billion dollar investment. It's not pocket change. For what it is, it's a great price, and it's probably a lower value because Lucas owned 100% of Lucasfilm, so they only had to deal with one guy who is already very wealthy, and old, and tired. Better than dealing with a ton of shareholders.

This really is a Megaton.

I feel like Count Dookakke was vindicated.. He was always talking about the inevitability of sequels..

So everything happening after ROTJ is pretty much covered in the EU going forward nearly 50 years without much room for breaks.

Is this just going to shit all over that or follow it?

The EU always respected that the prequels were off limits and no books were written in that time period until Lucas did the prequels. I have a bad feeling Disney will not respect EU as Canon.

I'm amazed Lucas is actually cashing out. Never thought it would ever happen.

George Lucas: Smartest business man in Hollywood:

  • Direct the biggest cultural phenomenons of the last 40 years
  • Sit back and let the merchandising money roll in from Star wars.
  • Produce a bunch of movies with other directors
  • Direct another 3 films after a 22 year break
  • Collect more money from Star Wars merchandise
  • Sell out to Disney for another 4 billion
Sure there's also THX, Skywalker Sound, ILM and Lucas Arts... But yeah. This man has never had a money problem.

This news stills blows my mind... and more Star Wars sequels. I already thought the three prequels were needless, do we really need more?

If whoever takes over is anything like Lucas they'll take what they like and ignore/contradict everything else.

Holy shit at this announcement...

I wonder though, if Disney now owns Marvel & ILM, will SFX still need to be negotiated for Phase 2/3?

But wow... My mind is boggling from all of the possibilities, not to mention Episode 7 in 2015...

Ya know what?? Disney might finally release the originals now... I hope =/

Anyway Disney is a veritable powerhouse now with this and Marvel, absolutely unbelievable news.

OTOH, Ep VII... "I've got a bad feeling about this..."

So, let me run this down real quick.

The Disney company now owns:

Jim Henson Studios / The Muppets
Pixar
Marvel Comics / Marvel Films
LucasFilm (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and yes, Howard The Duck :p )
LucasArts (I'm assuming)
Industrial Light & Magic
Skywalker Sound

This is.. insane.

Mark my words, they might not be discussing the Indy franchise right now on the conference call, but I'm fairly certain they'll look into relaunching that brand as well.

Some is bad true.

Thrawn stuff is amazing though. Really they should just make the Thrawn trilogy.

You know they wont though.

Dark Empire was always cool also, although it seems less cool now that I am older.
