Tomb Raider Review Thread!

D: Combat isn't exactly the best part about Uncharted. Any puzzles/tombs or get chased by wolves yet? You are making it sound like you are playing Gears of Wars.
I remember absolutely hating Uncharted when I first tried it. Think I even wrote out a ranting screed about it here on GAF in my early days. But after giving the game a break for awhile I realized the problem: I was trying to play it like a Tomb Raider game.

Once I went back into the game with my expectation goggles set to Gears of War in a jungle, it was all good times.

Considering how regularly games journalism will praise the most boring of combat systems because they're blinded by spectacle, yeah I think I'll pay attention to the few reviewers that happen to call out the negatives for once. The Machinima review is one of the few that bother to go in depth into what their issues were with specific parts of the combat. That means a whole lot more to me than "Oh combat's great. Explosions and brutality and junk."

I understand about the state of gaming journalism factoring into our decision whether to trust them or not.

With that said, my reply was not commenting on any of the positive reviews. It was in reply to fellow GAF'ers praising the combat and the game. That's important to me because it's a good sign that user reviews from actual players are chiming in agreement with the positive reviews.
Machinima came down a lot harder on this than most to the other reviews but all of them seem to have the same complaints like the disconnect between the story and what's actually happening and the qte's
I have a hard time agreeing with that when all the other reviews are praising Lara's character driven story.

Search your heart - you know it’s true.

I don't think the game is going to be bad, but Resident Evil 4 was a trailblazer. Even if Tomb Raider becomes the next RE4 in terms of changing the franchise and catapults the series upwards, it got beat to the punch by RE4 and CoD4. Resident Evil 4 and Modern Warfare were trend setters, nothing publicly shown has indicated that from Tomb Raider.

Maybe not revolutionary as RE4 or MW4, but I think...this is my opinion...it's a culmination of this generation when it comes to a amazing and satisfying single player experience.

If people are claiming it to be better than Uncharted than that's all there's to say about it. If it only had great multiplayer, it would be better. But Uncharted still is better as a whole only because of its excellent multiplayer. Single player-wise, I think TR has the edge because of Lara's strong character driven narrative.

I can't even trust GAF opinions on stuff like this. After the mobs of people who defended Uncharted 3's flustercuck combat, I'm no longer sure about who shares my tastes. So when a review goes off on negative aspects that resonate with what I, personally, don't like about shooters, I'll tend to hold that one up above others.

Don't worry Net_Wrecker, my impressions have never steered you wrong yet!

Don't let me down, bruh.

If in December you told me that Tomb Raider would have a higher Metacritic than Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 and Metal Gear Rising, I would have called you a horribly delusional fanboy.......yet here we are.

Machinima's review was structured differently though than others. While other outlets looked at the overall aspects of the game and gave a drive-by impression on them, Machinima focused on specific aspects of the game and spent minutes explaining why they felt it was a shortcoming.

Extremely excessive in the execution? Yes, but it was still a valid point that a) the game's narrative doesn't meld with the gameplay and b) the gameplay leaves little room for experimentation due to some design choices and super-aggro A.I. that can give the enemies in DS3 a good run.

Not that I care much for Machinima. Same outlet that give the big-name FPSs a huge pass but go the critical route on everything else. I do remember other outlets saying that the other characters, pretty much anything that wasn't Lara, were underwhelming.

The
creepy
fanbase might help you out with mods.

EDIT: There are also these pre-order DLC skins:

The Avatrix one looks much more grounded in reality and is more believable and less pandering than the original "costume", imo.

Oh my at the Hunter's outfit.

Conan's "review"

Edit: Yeah, may be some mild spoilers for the first part of the game. Mostly stuff we've seen in promotional videos though.

Much like that cleavage shot and tight pants, it is completely glorious. And that crowd reaction must have had Crystal Dynamics feeling good.

"This game makes you fall in love with her and then lose her over and over and over again...so...this was like high school all over again for me."

Man, Conan just needed to be nudged toward that that "protect her" line...

Conan's review was hilarious. Conan >>>>>>>> Jimmy Fallon when it comes to playing video games on their respective shows. He actually is competent (sometimes) and gives more than two shits about it. At least that's how it appears.

I didn't particularly care for Uncharted 3 after really enjoying Uncharted 2 but I'm still a little shocked at the backlash of the comparison of Tomb Raider to that series.

I'm a tad concerned about the amount of combat, like everyone else, because combat is by far the weakest part of Uncharted but I really think that the more open environments should help mitigate that by maintaining the goal of exploration.

I dunno, I guess I just don't see any reason to overreact before getting in there and giving it a shot myself. But I guess I'm a glass half full guy.

Which is ironic because Jimmy Fallon plays games as a hobby and Conan does not.
