I’ve loved Star Wars since I was a kid and was happy to have played this game.

The formula in Jedi Survivor is very traditional, campaign spanning over 6 chapters, 3 main planets, and 25-40 hours.

3 main planets and another secret planet known as “Tanalorr”.

Being a Jedi was an experience, its using the force, the lightsaber, landing big time combos on storm troopers and a large variety of enemies. A lot of people reduce Star Wars to a “space opera” but its influence here has samples from Horizon, Mass Effect, ghost of tsushima, Assassins Creed Valhalla, and other very good open world games.

Star Wars Jedi survivor was just relatable, defining the odds against the sith.

star-wars-jedi-survivor-fractured-resolve-force-tear-3.jpg

No one would argue Jedi Survivor is an open world game, some of the worlds are reduced but they could not be healthier with content.

Cal carries the lead role and finishes as one of the most powerful Jedi, early on the planet Coruscant Cal is pursuing Senator Sejan and the squad forms very quickly I’ll mention Bode Akuna (Jetpack), and eventually Merrin, (dathomirian nightsister) who makes the game way better. Expect to see a lot of her and has one of the best missions in the game.

Droids are different now, you see BB1 being used different in a variety of ways.

Lightsaber-Customization-menu-options-in-Jedi-Survivor.jpg

Good god the customization is here too, you have access to every piece of your light saber, now you get a gun, you see different outfits etc.

Jedi survivor is a refined game, all of the cool stuff in Pyloon’s Saloon keeps you distracted

A hub that is an important factor in the game, Pyloons Saloon is a Catina with a great atmosphere and continues to offer shops, games etc. certainly a top 5 location just a cool place a lot of detail and a lot to see.

You have the option to fast travel almost anywhere with meditation spots around the maps.

the-archive-jedha-star-wars-jedi-survivor.jpg

Facing jedi temples is great of course hardly seen in the movies these locations on various jedi home worlds get attention and shows us Cal's connection to ancient jedi and the force.

The reality with Star Wars games now is people aren’t happy and understandable with Battlefront’s recent mishaps.

The awe of discovering basically a Jedi homeworld was memorable, and there's a little bit of horror to killing all these enemies they throw at you. I could see Star Wars outlaws falling short in that regard because being bigger doesn’t necessarily mean it will be better.

Clearly a lot of time was put into Jedi Survivor and the only reason it isn’t being talked about is because of the name, it’s maps not holding a candle to elder scrolls or TOTK.

What did GAF think of Jedi Survivor?

I loved Jedi Fallen Order. I haven't played Jedi Survivor even though I already bought it, but I expect this game to be an improvement over the first one. Hopefully nothing drastically changed, but they just improved upon it.

It's good to hear good things about this one.

I loved it. Only had one stupid minor dumbass issue with it being how he held the lightsaber in the crossguard stance. Looked goofy as fuck when it coulda looked cool as fuck!

I was pleasantly surprised with the first game, though I did have to mod in the Mando and a voice modifier as I couldn't see that guy as anything other than the kid from Shameless. Was super interested in the sequel, but all the PC issues I read about kept me away from it, even with some pretty aggressive sales i've been seeing for it.

Did they ever fix the PC version?

Looked like crap on PS5, but I still got the plat. Enjoyed it overall.

They need to fire whoever came up with that map system and start over.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the first game. With that being said, there certainly were a few standout moments… multiple fun and interesting characters along with some captivating boss encounters. It’s ultimately unfortunate that the story fell so flat, that the absurd and meaningless betrayal rounded out the campaign. Add to that the constant gaggles of enemies spamming unblockable attacks and how unviable most of various stances were on the harder difficulties. Or to mention weird half baked game systems i.e. gardening or the massive empty environments. Even the map was objectively bad compared to the original. There certainly was something to enjoy but as a video game, as a complete experience, the simpler more focused original game is for me a better all round experience.

It's the main game I'm playing right now.
I'm enjoying it but I'm not blown away by it.

+ I enjoy the bigger levels and exploration is quite fun. Side content is limited but meaningful
+ Traversal is still great, it's nice having something a bit more complex in this time when most AAA games use the braindead Uncharted platforming that requieres little to no player input or timing
+ The new combat options are nice, I like the sword and pistol combo, both as a concept but also during gameplay
- The combat still doesn't feel that satisfying, the human enemies are fun but the larger enemies just feel like you are hitting them with a baseball bat, and doing the parries to deplete their stamina meter only to have them be stunned for 2 seconds and recover sucks, also some enemies just spam unblockable attacks which is lame (fuck that big frog in particular).
- While it's in a much better state than at launch, it's still a bit of a technical mess on Ps5 lots of bugs and glitches.
- Customization is still lame. It's a step up from the ponchos of the first one, but a bunch ugly and boring jackets and 1000 slightly different hilts for your lightsaber which you won't really see during normal gameplay doesn't make finding the hidden chests all that more exciting.

I know it has been a while for this game, but going to use spoiler tags anyway.

The betrayal was incredibly contrived, imo. And a waste. They created a really good character that would have been better utilized in a sequel, perhaps even as a playable character. Just some short-sightedness in exchange for a cheap shock moment that didn't really hit home like I think they wanted it to. And it is as if the writers even acknowledged this with the weirdness of the daughter somehow suddenly ok with how things turned out. Strange turn of events.

It's ok, but I didn't like the combat. It wasn't refined enough, fighting guys was often a chore, especially late in the game. I enjoyed the exploration (it reminded me of the nu-Tomb Raider games) but ultimately you're just getting a bunch of junk, like who cares about customizing your lightsaber handle and shit.

How’s the performance and image quality on PS5 now?
garbage

It was worth waiting for the patches. But I enjoyed the game and the lore. It would be awesome to see some of these characters in movies and tv shows.
I hope they make a third and tie it all in nicely to the lore somehow. It's basically a 3D Metroidvania the way it's set up.

My feelings are very similar. I really enjoyed it overall, but there are some really frustrating elements and design decisions.

Pros:
  • Very well done story. High production value, very cinematic, great characters, and some really impactful moments.
  • Traversal, exploration, and metroidvania elements are all really fun. I love acquiring new tools and abilities and being able to get to new areas.
  • I think the customization is fantastic. I hated the stupid poncho in the first game and removed it as soon as I could, but there weren't really any other good base outfit options. I'm shocked at the amount of personalization options we get here: hair, beard, jacket, shirt, pants - all separate, no presets! Love it. And the lightsaber customization, good Lord. SO many options for each little segment, dozens of different materials you can intermingle as you desire, even control the polish and aging... it's overwhelming.
  • For the most part, the graphics and visual design are very impressive and very Star Wars.
Cons:
  • Sadly, I think that just like the first game, the combat fluctuates between "meh" and "bad".
    • First off, I will always maintain that the "soulslike" style is just bad. It feels bad, it looks bad... it's not fun. There are so many examples of better melee combat in other games: God of War, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Batman Arkham... anything else is better. I feel like the entire concept is antithetical to the idea of playing as a Jedi - it's just not the right style of combat for a Star Wars Jedi game.
    • Maybe the above wouldn't be as bad if it was tuned to the nines, but it just feels unpolished. The attack patterns, timings, animations, AOE, hitboxes - none of it feels quite right. I feel like I'm constantly getting stunlocked, enemy attacks/projectiles hit sooner than they should, etc.
    • My biggest gripe: why can't I switch between all stances at any time? This was such a stupid idea. It's super cool having so many different stances and styles of lightsaber play, but surprise! You can only pick two because of arbitrary reasons! God, man, just let me have some fun. Put them all in a wheel and let me pick what I want.
  • All of the other "soulslike" design elements - meditation spots, limited fast travel, etc - are all just as annoying and out of place. Especially since you can't save anywhere, so you're gonna have to waste time traversing all the way back to a save spot if you wanna close the game.
  • The image quality and performance on PS5 is pretty poor. This makes a pretty interesting comparison to Fallen Order on PS5: Survivor obviously has better overall graphics, but the image quality and performance in FO are pristine, and I have to say I'd pick the latter over the former as it makes a bigger difference in the overall enjoyability of the experience. Better graphics aren't worth it if the image quality is so poor, with so much breakup, ghosting, and shimmering.

Played through on PC day 1, loved it.

Got half way through the PS5 version a few months back, loved that as well.

Personally I have (or was) been fan of star wars for as long as I could remember (was able to watch Return of the Jedi during its first theatrical release) but those days are long since dead for me.

Both of these games were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed them. It would be great if we were able to enjoy more core SW stores, but from my perspective they have moved on to younger fans and their current content isn't something I enjoy. It was great while it lasted.

Not holding out any hope for Outlaws, but I'm sure ill buy it and try it out. Would be ecstatic to be proven wrong.

Started a new game a couple of nights ago and I forgot how good the game is, jank and all.

Also I just got back from seeing The Phantom Menace at the cinema and it was fucking incredible.

This thread reminds me to get around making some big progress on Force Unleashed and part 2 as well...on this game....I skipped the first entry but I am somewhat interested to see how good this game really is, is it Uncharted meets Star Wars? Fortunately it is on Gamepass, so I will (eventually) check it out there

This. 100%.

I'm really alarmed by the amount of people who now claim combat is excellent because it has shitty mechanics that made it hard so it equals 'soulslike'.

Stunlocks are bullshit. Cals movement is poor to terrible. Tracking attacks are lame in 2024, the constant overlapping unblockables. I don't think there was really any point to any of the ability unlocks. Maybe 3 were really effective?

There's an excellent game in there. Production values, art, story, design but the combat is poorly tuned. The developers are leaning towards a Dark Souls game with a Star Wars skin.

Uncharted meets Star Wars is exactly right.

Depending on which difficulty you pick you can add in some souls like combat and bonfires etc.

It’s all so damn good.

Interesting take there, I will get to it eventually but in the middle of a fight with the Reapers right now (2nd playthrough of Mass Effect 3)

What did GAF think of Jedi Survivor?

I played it around the end of last year so post all the patches and thoroughly loved it...

In terms of Mainstream games, this was easily my GotY last year, it was perfectly paced and had a decent amount of Metroidvania exploration that made it worth platinuming on PS5. much more so than the first. Although i will say i think the first game had more larger and "Epic" moments, where this one only really had a few, but that was totally fine.

Plus I think this may be the only bit of Star Wars story I've enjoyed for a while now (and the story isn't even that special, it just shows how crap star wars is now).

my real goty was the talos principle 2 though.

It ran like shit at launch but I booted it up the other day and it seems fine now: it just happened to hit right before FFXVI and now FFVII Rebirth for me so it’s in my backlog.

It's more like Sekiro/Souls with a big fat heap of Metroid. The climbing stuff is Uncharted-esque, but apart from that it doesn't have much in common.
How can you say it doesn’t have much in common with uncharted?

Epic set piece moments. Climbing and swinging. Some puzzles. Cinematic story telling.

It absolutely follows the uncharted formula…

While navigating the world, the game most reminded me of the Tomb Raider games, which I really, really, really liked (well the first two). Except every time I got into the combat... It just sucks. It's not good for a souls-like, it's not good for anything. If they could have dialed it in this would have been a great game, but it just turned into a slog. The new stances were okay though. And they didn't fix one of the main problems with the first game, which was the lack of interesting collectibles and equipment, you're hunting down garbage. They "tried" by just making you collect more of it lmao. Like who gives a shit about a new lightsaber hilt, you cant even see it.

Edit: lol I said the same thing a few months ago, well at least my opinion didn't change.

Damn, I'd actually forgotten this game existed already.
"By the book / Generic" are the words I'd describe this with.
And boy was the tech bad (PC).. And I bought this after over a year of patches.

Combat gameplay loop was addictive to me. I generally like action/adventure linear games. Even though this is technically open world, it still felt linear at times. The game overall is alright, it has its faults but was enjoyable enough for me to complete it. Games like Tomb Raider, Uncharted etc. They are the type of games I'm constantly waiting to be developed. I'm really looking forward to Star Wars Outlaws, I'm hoping it's going to be decent.

Played about half the game before putting it down for Tears of the Kingdom last year. Came back to it recently. The combat is kind of disappointing. It just feels a bit sluggish and the parries are not satisfying at all to land. I think playing Rise of the Ronin beforehand weakened this aspect, to be fair

I will say it has the best platforming of any semi-open world game I have ever played. Respawn nailed that

I bought it in a Christmas sale and remember that the gameplay was at least somewhat fun, but after five months I can't for the life of me tell you what the hell happened in the story or remember any of the boss fights. It was a pretty forgettable experience for me.

Because Uncharted is a very linear game with very limited mechanics, at least in the first three. The Star Wars Jedi games have a lot more going on with them, with large, non-linear maps, and your character grows significantly during the course of the game, acquiring new skills, perks, abilities and equipment. It's not entirely dissimliar to Uncharted regarding its presentation like you say, but It'd be more accurate to say it has more in common with the Arkham games, or the modern Tomb Raider/God of War games when recommending it to someone who hasn't played them.

I’m thinking of switching from PC to PS5. Since this game is a little too similar to stellar Blade, which I’m playing now, I should probably just restart my play through at a later date on console. The stutter on the PC is getting annoying. Turns out I can’t just ignore it like I thought.

I did pc at launch on a 3080. Hated it.

Picked it up on ps5 deep sale and I’m now on chapter 5 of 6. Having a blast. Dual sense implementation is also nice with BD sounds.
