Media Create Sales: Week 17, 2016 (Apr 25 - May 01)

The competition would be in the fact that people have limited funds to spend, and stacking two games like that back to back (tapping similar markets) is going to give you an erosion in consumer spending. People don't have infinite money nor infinite time, so two long-ass JRPGs launching back to back is just not something I'd consider a wise strategy. Also since they are JRPGs with limited online (if any) importance, you're going to just push even harder into the second-hand market for one or the other. Buy one new, spend XY hours on the game, trade it in and get the other used Z weeks/days later and play for WU hours.

At this point, we should be asking about Splatoon vs. FFXV, lol.

I'm just waiting for Nintendo to announce Pokemon to coincide with his just to fuck with everything, now. (They won't.)

Usually RPGs like Persona can be done in a week. Maybe once people are done with P5 by then, they'll sell it while it's hot and buy FFXV the next week at its launch. :p

The only downside I see is much shorter legs for P5, which I don't see much of a big impact given that games in that genre have short legs to begin with.

And FFXV vs Splatoon ltd in Japan will be a fun discussion down the line lol.

There's Toukiden 2 and a new Robot Taisen coming at the end of June and Ys VIII in July.

Ys VIII is PSV only, the PS4 version launches in 2017.
And Toukiden 2 smells a bomba.

Capcom will release their full FY results on Monday, so we'll get an update for Monster Hunter Generations then, maybe, game isn't having legs so it might've not gotten a new shipment, or it was really small.

I'm more interesting to see weather or not sales of the game will make up for Street Fighter V.

Also Animal Crossing: New Leaf + Happy Price will outsell Pokémon X/Y next week, difference between the 2 is now less than 1000.

I wonder if Generations will herald the 3DS price drop in the west as MH4U ushered in the New3DS.

They definitely shipped copies the last trimester, the game is now overshipped and some stores are cutting its price.

So I was right with my guess of XCX as per the original poster, meanwhile everyone jumped on me :p

As for the prediction for upcoming Big JRPGs

Persona 5 (PS3/PS4) - 400k-600k

It is a mainline Persona game after 8 years when the series has grown in popularity and fanbase. Even the spin-offs have sold well so far.

Tales of Berseria (PS3/PS4) - 200k-300k

This is a bit hard to predict but its sales will depend largely on WOM. The initial sales are likely going to drop from ToZ.

Looking at recently released games in the series.

Tales of Xillia - 512k - 670k
Tales of Xillia 2 - 331k - 453k (~32% decline)
Tales of Zestiria - 316k - 369k ( ~18% decline)

I expect a bigger decline for Tales of Berseria but it should be able to reach atleast 200k in first week, otherwise it is a failure for Bamco.

Final Fantasy XV (PS4) - 1 million - 1.2 million

Expecting a decline of 30-40% from FFXIII so I think this number is reasonable enough. It it just that Japan has yet to show sales for a PS4 game with this figure, which is why everyone is in doubt over it. But looking at the other franchise which received a release on PS4, there was decline for some while others remained stable. Still there shouldn't be an insane drop in the sales/fanbase.

FFXIII opened to 1.51m and LTD is 1.96m. A decline of 40% gives us 900k for opening and around 1.17m for LTD and this is counting retail only.

Wait, is there a holiday in Japan around that time? How can people finish P5 in a week? They need to play like 8 hours a day.

Sept 19th (Monday) and Sept 22th (Thursday) are national holidays. Last year they created Silver Week, but this year they're isolated holidays on the same week.

It's not that impossible. Unless you take your sweet time like pushing for 100% on first playthrough or you are just inherently busy with other stuff, 1 week for finishing JRPGs like Persona is pretty average, with weekends and a little late night sleep days included. But if P5 is much, much longer than the previous 2 entries then that's a different story.

And with 2 holidays during that time, then all the more possible lol.

Hmm... doesn't look like Media Create has updated their website. Dengeki has nothing yet. So no sell-through ratio for now...

Animal Crossing is at 5,3m. As a Famitsu comparison there is still a battle but in reality when counting digital sales it was over many months ago.

The next coming months are going to be a huge pressure for me as a YO-KAI WATCH fan, I'm hoping YW3 succeeds in Japan. Cause if not, I'll be hearing YW hate comments across social media. ;_;

Get ready because I'm going to be rude again against those who thought it had a chance to take the crown from Pokemon.

Dengeki numbers are there: http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/269/1269129/

128k for Kirby.... that's quite the difference with MC. Sell-though ratio is about 60% for them. Triple Deluxe sold 219k, and so they note that sales may appear disappointing at first, but that there's nothing to worry about.

For Powapro, sell-through ratio is over 80% for all versions (they don't give individual data).

By the way, just saw this...

26./00. [3DS] LEGO Marvel's Avengers <ADV> (Warner Entertainment Japan) {2016.04.28} (¥4.700) - 3.325 / NEW <20-40%>

That's pretty bad... I don't even want to imagine how much the other versions sold.

I'm curious about this one.

Playing the demo on PS4 and the framerate was dropping out of its ass. Wonder how the PSV version will be able to handle it.

Have you ever wanted to play a PSP hunting game with a PSone frame rate? Congrats, Toukiden 2 on Vita is for you. It's ugly, it runs about as poorly as it could and it's going to sell horribly compared to the first. KT should be proud. They built up a pretty solid new IP, then killed it almost immediately. Usually that only happens to Omega Force's licensed games.

If it does flop, I do wonder what the fallout will be. I think whoever made the decision to lead development for Toukiden 2 on anything other than Vita probably shouldn't be allowed to make decisions anymore.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I wonder if Generations will herald the 3DS price drop in the west as MH4U ushered in the New3DS.

I can already see it and Metroid Prime: Federation Forces coming out both on September 3rd, and that's when the price cut is unleashed. MH + a Nintendo game, just like for New 3DS.

Btw...do I look stupid if I say that those second week drops for Star Fox are better than what I expected? I know the debut was low, but that's a lot less than your usual second week drop (more around 65-70% at best). But several games saw small drops or even increases due to the beginning of the Holidays, so it probably is influenced by it.

The series hasn't had a release since 2014, and the mobile game has been successful (iirc). It's the first solid baseball game for the PS4 in Japan and NPB & baseball generally are very popular (for example the two national high school tournaments (Koshien) each year are huge events run by the big newspaper/media groups Asahi and Mainichi Shinbun, airing on national broadcast tv & streaming).

I'm a big power pro fan so I got both PS4 and PSV versions. It's just a great, great version of power pro. The best the game has ever looked, visually, and the new story mode seems to be pretty cool.

Konami's baseball engines are top notch. Power Pro isn't as hard core as their other series (PYS, which is/may be dead), but it hits a sweet spot between a more sim like game and an arcade game. Tons of modes and ways to create players (some infested by PTW/gatcha mechanics though). My favorite is the Best Nine mode where you manage a high school team, and develop players over their 2 1/2 year eligibility period and hope they get drafted. If they get drafted you can use them in the other modes, like My Life and Pennant. It's fun because most of the kids who join the team will be ordinary players but sometimes you get an absolute monster, which is exciting because (1) you can mold them into super players for the other modes and (2) your school will have a shot at Koshien.

There's a ton of content in the game, more than any recent version I think, including last year's special event uniforms. Like here's my favorite player (Sho Nakata of the Nippon Ham Fighters) wearing the special throwback unis they had one week in 2015.

ChpwiceWsAAvNbv.jpg

Thanks for the info, it's a shame such gameplay concepts couldn't be used a US baseball game.

There has been several Wii U shipments during this week. However, it seems Japan should be the only country where PS4 is cheaper than Wii U.

I feel the need to point out that those PS4 are "open-box-new" and without tax, while the WiiU-bundles are new and MSRP including tax.

Actually, back when 2K held the exclusive MLB license they were desperate to get every penny they could off of it. They localized two of the Power Pros games and released them for PS2, Wii and DS.

Man, that was 8 years ago ...

Seems like an alright hardware bump for vita and wiiu, not for 3ds (but at this point) and ps4.

I imagine they see trying for the Western audience as more important than retaining the modest Japanese audience especially when Vita will probably be dead by the time Toukiden 3 could be a thing.

I didn't even know footage of the Vita version existed until this post and I searched for it.

Jesus Christ that looks awful. The framerate at the start with the combat looks like it's hitting single digits.

There's a Japan-only PS4 beta for Toukiden 2. Compare that to Ni-oh, which has a global beta going on right now. If Toukiden 2 were angling for a western audience, that would also be global. Heck, Toukiden 2 has yet to actually be confirmed for a western release. Assuming the brand could make it big in the west would be a dumb decision, Kiwami sold poorly on PS4 everywhere.

I watched the live stream where they presented that. The Youtube comments were basically a sea of "This looks terrible" and "I'm cancelling my preorder." It's astonishing that Koei Tecmo felt that's the kind of product they could serve the main audience for the game.

Sometimes people (me included) need to be mocked. Just look at this:

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

What's so strange about considering XenobladeX bigger than Star Ocean V ? I'm not comparing the history of the franchise but those two games.

Everyone who follows import reviews and impressions knows that Star Ocean V, while a decent snack for summer before Final Fantasy XV, Tales of Berseria and Persona 5, is a middle class RPG way smaller in scale, dev time and budget than anticipated. I don't need to explain why XenobladeX is the total opposite of this, and is by far the biggest RPG ever created by Nintendo and one of the most ambitious of its genre in the recent years. If I wanted to troll I could have compared with Genei Ibun Roku #FE to show how fantastic tri-Ace did, y'know.

Do you know Xenoblade X budget? I'm pretty sure that you're aware of all the interviews (posted here several times) where Takahashi talks about the budget of Xenoblade X Chronicles. Let me try again:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=189613883&postcount=273

Now, do you know Star Ocean V budget? (taking into account both versions) And no, seeming cheaper than Xenoblade X it's not a definitive argument. I'm not saying that Xenoblade X is cheaper than SO V (is probably the other way around) but saying that Xenoblade is the biggest and most ambitious RPG to make SOV sales look "good" is disingenous at best or utter nonsense seeing that you don't know anything about the budgets for both games (feel free to correct me if that's not the case).

So when someone says something like this or "digital will save X game" without further explanations and knowing that 99% of the time digital sales are only 10-15% of retail sales is a reason to be mocked IMO. And the same goes for "Asia will save it".

Now Chris has been mocking actions (fanboys, game sales...) from the very beginning (and rightfully so I should add) be it Mpl90 with the comgnet data, Kandinsky and myself with horrible predictions, Koei with musou sequels... etc. but now that he's mocking some actions related to Sony it seems that some people got upset ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Anyway, more on topic: Do we know how much was the first shipment for StarFox Zero? Seeing these sell-through numbers I'm expecting something like 100.000... not even Golden Week is going to save it so it's going directly to the bomba bins.

And last one: Is someone expecting FF XV to beat Splatoon sales? I'm seeing more cautious predictions now than some months ago.

I imagine they see trying for the Western audience as more important than retaining the modest Japanese audience especially when Vita will probably be dead by the time Toukiden 3 could be a thing.

Didn't Toukiden for PS4 ultra bombed on the west? I don't think they're trying to appeal the west. Seems more like they needed a change on the gameplay since they want to move it to home consoles (where hunter genre isn't popular) and something went wrong.

Majority of sales for Toukiden will always come from Japan for what it is. Japanese companies try to switch the buying audience from Vita to PS4 but so far no matter what they do they have failed.

If Toukiden performance is as bad on Vita as I read it could be the first victim of these actions.

Only expensive thing in Xenoblade X is voice actors, read Iwata's Ask for more details.

Only expensive thing in SO5 imo maybe Akiman's art works, no joke.

Animal Crossing is at 5,3m. As a Famitsu comparison there is still a battle but in reality when counting digital sales it was over many months ago.

Get ready because I'm going to be rude again against those who thought it had a chance to take the crown from Pokemon.
It's people like you that want to be right about YW just to satisfy your "Pokemon will always reign" supreme taste.

JK. But seriously, I don't think it was Level-5's intention to give YW competition. It's the news media that wrongly accuse the series as the Pokemon killer. And it only adds worries to YW fans like me. :p

Do you know Xenoblade X budget? I'm pretty sure that you're aware of all the interviews (posted here several times) where Takahashi talks about the budget of Xenoblade X Chronicles.

No one here pretend to know the budget of the games. If you read my post again without bias, you know there is nothing unfair by considering XenobladeX being a bigger game than Star Ocean V. And I would add that XenobladeX did a very good 200K last December in NPD, something I'm pretty sure Star Ocean V will not be able to do this summer.

So when someone says something like this or "digital will save X game" without further explanations and knowing that 99% of the time digital sales are only 10-15% of retail sales is a reason to be mocked IMO. And the same goes for "Asia will save it".

Just a note about digital since you talked about it. Some weeks ago, Famitsu estimated something around 50 000 digital sales for Dark Souls III. That changed quite a lot the perception around here because we came from "yep, franchise fatigue, I told ya" to "ah, actually the results are similar to Dark Souls II". Only thing I said about Star Ocean V was the game could be close to 200K with digital and I see nothing ridiculous with that estimation, since it's 150K+ at retail now.

Anyway, between your last remark and the one before from the Genius, it's funny how the simple fact I don't want to join the GAF burial party of Star Ocean makes me a dedicated console warrior (to make my case worse, I even believe Street Fighter is not dead, mind you). Both of you, feel free to spend 10 minutes in my history post to collect how much I like to shitpost and downplay every games and companies I don't like. After that, maybe you can tag me as you see fit.

Oh sorry, the Genius is actually mocking everything equally ? My mistake, then ( ͡° ͜ʖ ^)

Yup. I mean, XenoX may be hugeee in scope but its graphics is not super great at all. Hell many of its quest scenes even skip VA, so i can see the small budget here.
