Jarod McChicken you have given life again in these threads, but in a bad way. It's not bad you are one of the biggest supporters of Sony, but really get over it.

Your only contribution in here is finding excuses for everything Sony related.

I wonder which which game will steal the other's sales more, Persona or Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy has the bigger draw, but by releasing Persona first, Atlus may be able to steal some sales from people who are just rpg fans in general. Either way September will be a huge month for ps4 whether we see it in retail or we don't because of used sales.

My guess:
RPG fanatics will buy both
major of otakus will buy only P5
mass normies will see only FF15
smart asses will wait for used FF15

P5 have advantage over 15 on my bias mind.

If people are curious about what Power Pro is all about, you can download the Free to Play player creation app on the Japanese store (it's called Power Pro Success Special). It contains the "Success" mode where you take a player and get one year of their high school career to increase their stats through events, and after that you can customize their appearance and they are available for a free tournament mode where you create a team and use in CPU matches against other teams. You only get to play key moments in the games, so it's not like it's a free substitute for the real game there. I uploaded a video from PS4 share of one of these games, it's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRaLxzfHdg4 (PS4 Share seems to downgrade the video quality substantially). Success is the mode that has all the PTW/gatcha mechanics, since it's very difficult to make even a decent player without spending money or time. Again this FTP game doesn't have anywhere near the features of the full game but you can get a good sense of what the gameplay is like watching that (but since those are newly created teams, all the players are crappy generic players, without the character you get from a normal team).

For the full game, the opening movie is here, a video showcasing all the game modes is here, and the Konami site is here. The games are kanji heavy but powerprotranslation.com has a lot of resources for past games that will generally transfer over.

Didn't Toukiden for PS4 ultra bombed on the west? I don't think they're trying to appeal the west. Seems more like they needed a change on the gameplay since they want to move it to home consoles (where hunter genre isn't popular) and something went wrong.

It did but the focus on PS4 and switch to open world would imply it's western focused to me.

There's a Japan-only PS4 beta for Toukiden 2. Compare that to Ni-oh, which has a global beta going on right now. If Toukiden 2 were angling for a western audience, that would also be global. Heck, Toukiden 2 has yet to actually be confirmed for a western release. Assuming the brand could make it big in the west would be a dumb decision, Kiwami sold poorly on PS4 everywhere.

I watched the live stream where they presented that. The Youtube comments were basically a sea of "This looks terrible" and "I'm cancelling my preorder." It's astonishing that Koei Tecmo felt that's the kind of product they could serve the main audience for the game.

Fair enough. To be honest though focusing on Vita right now would be delaying the inevitable. They either try to establish it on console/in the west or just let it die with Vita. Either way it's a dead end.

The idea to postpone just the PS3 version of SO5 in favour of the PS4 backfired big time. Their recent RPG push in general underperformed, starting with Setsuna and now SO5. Besides their biggest IPs the future prospects don´t seem to be that bright in this regard.

I imagine they see trying for the Western audience as more important than retaining the modest Japanese audience.

Great idea. What could possibly go wrong anyway.

i don't know what people were expecting from setsuna but that was a pretty good result for the game with the low budget and non existent marketing

While we're on the subject of Xenoblade Chronicles X, do we have any further sales data for it? The latest known figure we have is from Famitsu which they estimated 114,665 by the end of 2015 (not including ~22,000 digital copies from the first month).

I've also been begging CreamSugar on the NPD threads to release the latest number for XCX in the US.

No one here pretend to know the budget of the games. If you read my post again without bias, you know there is nothing unfair by considering XenobladeX being a bigger game than Star Ocean V. And I would add that XenobladeX did a very good 200K last December in NPD, something I'm pretty sure Star Ocean V will not be able to do this summer.

Hahaha is funny that you say "read without bias" :p At the end of the day it all comes down to you defending SOV sales throwing a jab at an RPG from another company (I don't care if it's Nintendo or Microsoft but I was sure that it was not going to be a PS4/PS3/Vita RPG). It's not only a silly argument but a very poor attempt to stir some console wars here. So yeah, you deserve to be mocked.

Just a note about digital since you talked about it. Some weeks ago, Famitsu estimated something around 50 000 digital sales for Dark Souls III. That changed quite a lot the perception around here because we came from "yep, franchise fatigue, I told ya" to "ah, actually the results are similar to Dark Souls II". Only thing I said about Star Ocean V was the game could be close to 200K with digital and I see nothing ridiculous with that estimation, since it's 150K+ at retail now.

But that's the reason for the mocking: Dark Souls/Bloodborne are the exception to the digital rule. If they sell 30% digital ratio it doesn't mean that SOV can do the same. And when someone comes here saying "SOV could've sold 40-50.000 digital by now because Dark Souls III did it 3 weeks ago" when we have tons of examples showing the contrary... well, you tell me!

Besides, Famitsu digital estimates are rubbish at best :p

Anyway, between your last remark and the one before from the Genius, it's funny how the simple fact I don't want to join the GAF burial party of Star Ocean makes me a dedicated console warrior (to make my case worse, I even believe Street Fighter is not dead, mind you). Both of you, feel free to spend 10 minutes in my history post to collect how much I like to shitpost and downplay every games and companies I don't like. After that, maybe you can tag me as you see fit.

Oh sorry, the Genius is actually mocking everything equally ? My mistake, then ( ͡° ͜ʖ ^)

I'm not going to waste my time going through your history post like you're doing with Chris. After being some years on MC threads it's easier to see the preferences from the usual MC gaffers and you are not an exception :) So you can keep defending SOV sales and calling Chris genius sarcastically but at least you could get better with your arguments.

They did at one point when they localized two of the games, see my post earlier in the thread.

localizing the modern games now seems like it could be a fairly costly endeavor without an obvious return. there is a ton of text in My Life, Best Nine, etc. to cover all of the events that happen each day. plus they'd have to remove all of the NPB branding, stadiums, names, and rework the appearances & stats of the players to be generic players for western game. then re-voice all the announcing and change all the music. finally they'd have to tweak the core game at least a little to change strategy, since the AI will generally behave like a Japanese team (you'll see a lot of bunts, no fastball counts, etc.) rather than an MLB team.

all that and i don't know if it would even sell.

On the topic of baseball, it's shame Nintendo has basically abandonned their Mario baseball series (well, they've pretty much abandonned anything not Mario Kart / Tennis / Golf / Party, but heh...). Did the last few entry tank or something?

I'm afraid the only way we could get data is if the game sold 1m units and Nintendo mentioned it in their financials. That or an interview or something. I believe we have FR numbers (fake edit: 40k within first two weeks).

A good indicator was also the number of time the first Tyran of the game was killed, the number was confirmed to be worldwide and it was very accurate as you fight the boss very early into the game (like 2h) and can only kill it once per save.

Its not worldwide, though its close. Its EU/NA/RotW, and Japan is separate.

The number in Japan has long since been eclipsed and it didn't change at launch, while the western edition launched at 0 kills.

If i should be honest, i believe that when all is well and done, XenoBlade Chronicles X will be very close to a million... and i don't think is impossible a million shipped, even if i don't think will happen.

Yeah sadness.TT i mean, golf and soccer is also one of my fav here.TT

Well if we add asia and maybe the whole europe. 500k would not be farfetch here.^~^

Many numbers i posted are incomplete.
Only Japan is probabily close to the final real numbers. France is only 2 weeks, while USA is the most recent data but don't count digital.

I bet XenoBlade Chronicles worldwide by now is easy >700K sold through.

It's not only a silly argument but a very poor attempt to stir some console wars here. So yeah, you deserve to be mocked.

Sorry but no, it was an attempt to tone down the repetitive and boring tune of the death of Star Ocean (we had exactly the same for Street Fighter in NPD / GFK threads). Look at it this way : no one ever considered the fact that Nintendo would shut down Monolith Soft after XenobladeX performance, so I don't understand why Star Ocean should necessarily be buried when it does equal or better numbers. There is no logic here. And just because of this opinion I'm suddenly tagged like this by someone I wouln't exactly consider the pinnacle of objectivity, so that was a little hard to ignore.

Fair enough, Dark Souls III digital estimates were on the highside, but those who repeat again and again that digital doesn't matter are equally stupid to those who say it will save a lost cause.

After being some years on MC threads it's easier to see the preferences from the usual MC gaffers and you are not an exception :)

Oh believe me I'm not so bad at this game either. And yeah, you don't really need to be Sherlock to know where I play the most, but there is a huge difference between having preferences and being called a manifestation of the Sony Defense Force for having a different opinion on one fucking game.

Whoa, just noticed that neither version of Punchline charted in Dengeki's Top 50. RIP.

Oh damn, completely forgot it was supposed to be out... that one sure flew below the radar. Not sure what happened here, I almost thought it was delayed for a second. Then again, I don't think there's been much interest for this game, even from gaffers (outside those who follow Uchikoshi's stuff).

5pb.'s the publisher, right?

Poor Uchikoshi. Wasn't this marketed as some VN panty collection thing? Seems like the niche scope was far too narrow.

Haven't really followed stuff for the game, but if it's like the anime, there's no panties collecting going on. Think sci-fi story à la VLR with a touch of panties (but nothing about collecting them).

Not sure if it's more niche than other niche games on Vita who did end up charting, though. I think it all comes down to global lack of interest.

Well, at least ZE3 is happening. Definitely going to sell poorly in Japan, but at least Uchikoshi got the opportunity to bring things to closure (which is a good thing, as I remember him going to try and use Punchline to show his bosses at SC they should greenlight ZE3... pretty sure that plan would have backfired).

All that really matters is that we observe Kirby, our lord and savior. And celebrate his successes (while dutifully ignoring his failures).

Whoa, just noticed that neither version of Punchline charted in Dengeki's Top 50. RIP.

RIP indeed.

LATIN, MATRIPEDICABUS, DO YOU SPEAK IT
localizing the modern games now seems like it could be a fairly costly endeavor without an obvious return. there is a ton of text in My Life, Best Nine, etc. to cover all of the events that happen each day. plus they'd have to remove all of the NPB branding, stadiums, names, and rework the appearances & stats of the players to be generic players for western game. then re-voice all the announcing and change all the music. finally they'd have to tweak the core game at least a little to change strategy, since the AI will generally behave like a Japanese team (you'll see a lot of bunts, no fastball counts, etc.) rather than an MLB team.

all that and i don't know if it would even sell.

I'm not saying they should localize the new games, they'd have to make a MLB version and localize that if they wanted to do something now. That won't really sell a ton...but who knows, maybe if it was a PC release as well it could do better. Not enough to justify the cost I'd imagine.

Woah what's so good about that Konami Baseball game? Anyone playd it to offer some insight please?

I played a little bit of it yesterday and it was a lot of fun. A lot of attention to detail, great animation, lots of charm and RPG elements. Surprisingly sim like too. Its not as arcade silly as you'd think given the visuals.

What are the odds of Jikkyou coming stateside?

And last one: Is someone expecting FF XV to beat Splatoon sales? I'm seeing more cautious predictions now than some months ago.

I really don't think FFXV has any chance of beating Splatoon LTD in Japan, even if there's an NX port way later (which would be way too late, and I really don't see that happening anyway).
DQXI PS4+NX vs FFXV might be interesting though.

I don't think any of those games will really steal the other one's sales in Japan. Worldwide is a different story, but I think the impact on those fanbases and other buyers will be minimal.

Fair enough. To be honest though focusing on Vita right now would be delaying the inevitable. They either try to establish it on console/in the west or just let it die with Vita. Either way it's a dead end.

Well, I think the Vita would have been alive enough to sustain a proper/traditional hunting Toukiden 2 and it's inevitable Kiwami edition in 2017.

And in 2018 and beyond, the NX handheld might have been an attractive platform for T3.

It just feels so dumb to change your winning formula so much that it's scope grows beyond what your bread and butter platform can sustain, in the blind hope to chase an audience that has shown zero interest in your product to begin with (Kiwami's atrocious PS4 sales in the west...or in general).

There isn't any point continuing this discussion, so I'll kindly request to not respond for me again. I read almost every post in these threads and if you do a little research you'll see you agree me.

Jarod McChicken you have given life again in these threads, but in a bad way. It's not bad you are one of the biggest supporters of Sony, but really get over it. Your only contribution in here is finding excuses for everything Sony related.

And now since you unmasked my true identity, nothing I would say could be taken seriously and I'm out of the debate right ? Clever girl.

Finally back on topic, Punchline was a strange choice for a videogame adaptation, but I would have liked to see it charted just because Uchikoshi is involved. I'm not sure how to mesure the popularity of an anime, but I think even the Punchline TV was not so well known. Had a chance to watch it on Crunchyroll when I learned he was the writer. As always with Uchi, it's very plot twist based, hence the difficulty of finding an appeal to play a game based on that story.

This and other recent results of VN games (Psycho-Pass, EVE Burst Error remake) shows how Steins;Gate 0 was a special one in terms of popularity. Eh, I've just realized Yu-No is missing in action.

Anyone would know about how the Nioh demo was received among japanese users ? The game had a stunning effect on me and, by the looks of it, on a lot of poeple here. So I wonder how the hard difficulty + japanese setting combination can do in this market, where the Souls games have a solid fanbase.

It's not that impossible. Unless you take your sweet time like pushing for 100% on first playthrough or you are just inherently busy with other stuff, 1 week for finishing JRPGs like Persona is pretty average, with weekends and a little late night sleep days included. But if P5 is much, much longer than the previous 2 entries then that's a different story.

And with 2 holidays during that time, then all the more possible lol.
Thanks for the information, and the other two replies above that I can't quote on cellphone.

I guess it's my first play through of P4G that left a false impression on me. I maxed all social links in the first play through, and unlocked that Rise trophy (didn't grind it on purpose). It took me about 70 hours.

Edit: also this is the first time I feel like home on GAF. Sales threads are my favourite kind of threads.
