There was a lot of shit going on at that time. I never understood the account suicides with the posting of porn, the angry bullshit that was being posted demanding accounts to be closed.

It is hard to take people like that seriously when they want to have adult conversations about the world and that is their reaction to what was happening then. I am all for people wanting to come back to be a part of the community here at GAF but why demand an account closure or do the so called epic account suicide. Be a responsible person and just walk away if it is too much to handle and perhaps collect ones thoughts before joining everyone else on some mass exodus.

You can’t tell people not to laugh at something because it’s sensitive to you. That’s not how life works. Some people will be happy to play into your sense of victimhood, but a lot of people are going to do what they want regardless of how much you whine and moan.

Honestly, I don't ever recall this particular user being part of the psycho troop that took over OT leading up to the eventual blow up. Everything I remember about them was all about the gaming side and Xbox! Still, making a thread about leaving was stupid and an ego stroke. I much prefer the people who silently took a hiatus and then just one day started posting here again.

I mean, this person has been around here since 2010 so they should know that getting a good slap upside the head by EviLore and not getting banned (let alone unbanned) is a bit of a badge of honor.

General comment, not directed at you, but I’ve seen a few comments in this thread that indicate to me that some have learned absolutely nothing from the last two years. Specifically, the importance of culture and how you undermine it by ignoring behaviour and attempting to equalise people from the top down. I think we all want civil discourse but we can’t shortcut our way there. It has to be built up sustainably and a huge wave of Reefugees would likely overwhelm it. The likes of Winter John cheerleading to let them all back, no questions asked, simply to boost traffic as much as possible, need to be shot down. Quite frankly, they’re idiots. Let those who show humility and a willingness to address past wrongs come back and reintegrate. Tell the others to go play on the highway.

You only need to look at the way they operate over there, unrestrained and without any moderating influences from the top down, to see how easy it is to click a mouse and ban someone in tyrannical fashion, then make up a post-hoc justification for it.

We exercise restraint and look to do things the right way, by contrast. But we can always temporarily suspend those principals to throw as many screeching nutcases as necessary into the ban meatgrinder. The team and I are always ready for some action.

You have to deprogram these people and that is only going to come with a proper ethering. They need to be exposed to a little corrective bullying and exposed to more ideas than what were in their little echo chamber.

Then again, I am of the opinion that one shouldn't be able to block out hearing voices they don't like. Ignore features on forums and social media are a big part of why things have gotten the way they are these days.

I get what you're saying, and I absolutely think people should be (and generally are) respectful in real-life interactions, but to expect people to be respectful to any and all sensitivities in their postings online, especially on an anonymous forum where posters could be anyone, is just unrealistic. We've seen where that path leads. Identities form around disabilities or perceived "oppressions," hierarchies are formed, and whomever is loudest about needing protection gets to claim the power of silencing others.

There's obviously some level of base decency that should be respected: no overly aggressive personal insults, no targeted racial or sexual slurs, etc. but that list of banned speech should be kept to a minimum in general.

you do realize that one of the main traits of autism is lack of social awareness which results in social isolation. this isnt just someone being introverted or shy because they are a loser on a video game forum. this is a person who was born with a lack of awareness both you and i take for granted. calling an autistic person pathetic for not having a social circle in real life is not only callous but one of the worst things i've read on any forum.
