Tomb Raider Review Thread!

lunch

there's ALWAYS ONE
Despite looking forward to the game, I'm surprised by how positive the reviews are, but after going through a few of them, I think I'm going to pass on it. I can't believe how grisly the GameTrailers review is, and if the amount of blood and gore in every shot wasn't so bothersome, it would be comical. There's a shot in the review that looks like it's hitting Saw levels of absurdity. No thanks.

This game looks to be a hit and a lot of you guys had this being a disaster. You guys are the Pachter of video game forums.

Never again will i listen to you guys for anything.
Pretty sure a lot of people were criticizing their PR, not the game itself. And rightfully so.

You listen to random gaffers for game advice? I suggest finding a few people with similar tastes (power posters in your favorite game's OT) and seeing what they hype.

No offense to Derrick, but I laugh whenever I see him post. Simply because he has become the Debbie Downer of GAF. It's good to see someone point out all the negative, just like I tend to point out the positive. So I do indeef like his posts, I just rarely respond to them. I'm accepting of Derrick.

I love Derrick's posts, even on the (increasingly rare) occasion that I find them ridiculously unfair, but painting him as always negative isn't as accurate as it may feel.

Derrick, Amir0x, and Riposte are three people I don't agree with on a lot of things, but who approach things from a similar gameplay-first stance as I do and so I frequently seek out their opinions. The fact that they may often be the most obvious vocal minority means they enjoy a lot of different genres and have strong expectations for them, and so they turn up everywhere you happen to be.

I'm just saying, if you think someone is a joke and don't care to engage with them, do everyone (most of all yourself) a favor and put them on ignore.

It looks like a decent Uncharted clone with more exploration, which should be a good time on its own, but I'm bummed that the classic risky platforming the series is known for is considered irrelevant or too difficult for modern audiences.

Weird, since Uncharted seems to be inspired by original Tomb Raider

I'm actually interested in the MP, I'll have to check it out when I get the game next week.

Happy to see it's getting critical praise, I love the direction they took the IP.

Well, I just pre-ordered the game at Amazon. I figured they offered the best pre-order bonuses, those being the Art Book, Mud/Camouflage skin, Shantytown DLC Map, access to the Scavenger Hunt, and Final Hours documentary [even though I do not have a Kindle -_-].

I'm pretty excited, I didn't expect this game to be received so warmly. Here's hoping that I'm as pleasantly surprised as I was for DmC.

The PR plus the over-the-top gory execution sequences is what sealed the deal for me. The executions are just so un-Lara like, they're definitely trying to make her more "badass" or whatever. Obviously, the review scores are saying it's a good, polished game for what it is. I just don't like what it is so I'll be passing.

So my main gripe based on some reviews so far is that the game's gameplay is counter intuitive to its narrative.

That and the multi-ethnic stereotype gang.

Hmmm... the platforming sounds pretty meh and the game in general sounds pretty action-oriented. I sure I will have a lot of fun with it because I like a lot of the elements they have here, but it doesn't sound like a great TR game.

Some of the preorder DLC stuff has different costumes. Has any review pointed out anything like in game unlockable costumes? Underworld had tons IIRC

See guys, Derrick got excited enough about something to give it three exclamation points.

It's just that that something happened to be porn.

Hey, at least he gave us a months notice about how he'll be picking apart and most likely bashing Infinite (without playing, of course). Give 'im a break.

I'm in a bad spot with Infinite. I didn't think much of Bioshock aside from the story, and I'm still at this point not sure how Infinite is even going to play and be structured.

I'm a far bigger TR fan, so I've not invested the time investigating Infinite. I will say those 80s documentary parody trailers have me wanting a game like them more than like Bioshock (however that might work.)

Yeah you've made quite a few posts regarding your desire to see a game based off of the style of those docu trailers. That would be so, so awesome and probably one of the creepiest game experiences for me personally.

But the actual content of the reviews confirms many of the complaints...

Most of the time would probably be me looking over my shoulder to see if anyone just heard those screams that could be mistaken as orgasms.

Kind of like my porn!!!

This is not directed at you personally but I just find it hilarious how everyone thinks this sounds like porn. They're normal expressions of pain and exhaustion. I'm pretty sure no one would be making those porn references if the game had the same amount of moaning but from a male protagonist.

Hard to tell based on shitty YouTube quality, but the PS3 version does look a bit more defined (360 version has that extra layer of vaseline?).

The PS3 version seems to have a higher resolution/sharper textures in that comparison. It's not noticeable in that picture but it is if you watch the video in HD/fullscreen.

That video certainly makes the PS3 version look slightly better, but I'm not completely convinced. Still waiting for DF.

I'll buy on PC, anyway, so I don't really care.

Still not trusting any of these until I play it myself.

All of these places heaped on the praise and GOTY awards for Uncharted 2, and that to me was a pretty shallow and vapid experience. It looked nice though.

Not really. Uncharted is Indiana Jones in game form.

Uncharted wishes it had the quality characterization of the Indiana Jones films.

I would put the quality of the narrative in Uncharted more akin to those terrible Richard Chamberlain adventure films (King Solomon's Mines for example)

A bit conflicted on wether i should buy this game. 3rd person action adventure/platform/puzzle games is one of my favourite game genres but i wasn't really interested in this for some reason since it seemed more of a serious toned Uncharted clone. The scores seem to indicate a good game though.

As a big fan of Uncharted 1&2 but also as somebody who sort of grew tired of certain aspects from that franchise in Uncharted 3 and Golden Abyss (like the auto platforming and cinematic cutscenes/setpieces/gameplay), i wonder if this is a game for me. Also, Uncharted was in essence a light hearted game and i'm not sure if i'll dig the serious and violence orientated atmosphere in this game. Seems light on puzzles and full of combat.

On the other hand, Amazon uk has it on sale for a good price.

Really? I thought Uncharted 2 was amazing and the reviews were right on the money. I guess different strokes for different folks.

Haha i just watched the GT review.I thought it was very funny how the guy kept mentioning the game's shortcomings (even ridiculing it at some points) and then goes and gives it a score of 8.5!
Lets not make papa SE angry, that would not be a smart thing right GT?

If the framerate of the PS3 version holds up to the 360 version (which we'll find out in time when DF does the comparison) then surprisingly, PS3 version would be the one to get based on pure gfx polish alone.
Yeah, Im waiting for a 2nd opinion to confirm, but if that video is accurate, its a surprisingly big difference.

Wasn't expecting, considering all demos shown have been on 260 afaik

When it comes to multiplats, the 360 almost always is the safer bet.
